Their first album was amazing. They had to hurry because Bob Dylan was going on tour. They only had 10 days to complete the recording of 10 songs. They wrote a song in the morning and recorded it in the evening. Roy Orbison passed away before this video was shot. That's his guitar in the rocking chair. Legendary session drummer, Jim Keltner is also in the band. Check out their video of Handle With Care.

The sad passing of the great Roy Orbison in 1988 was so untimely as far as this amazing group was concerned, the mind boggles as to what they could have continued to produce together. There will never be such a collaboration of such talent being put together again as the Travelling Wilbury's.

George was in Los Angeles to record one song to finish a project. Jeff Lynn was going to produce it for him. They decided to call Bob Dylan to see if they could borrow his home studio to do the recording. First, George had to borrow a guitar from Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison came along. This all happened by accident, as a lark, just for fun.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were touring with and the backing band for Bob Dylan in the mid 80s, Jeff and George had worked on a few projects already, and all these people would be friendly with each other since the 70s. Roy Orbison toured with Elvis and Johnny Cash back in 1956, then he toured with the Beatles in England in 1962-63. There is a lot of history in this band that wasn't a band.

What's so funny is how they got together. It was just a wish that Jeff Lynne and George Harrison had as they named other guys they would like to form a band with. They just started naming names and then decided to call them up and see if they were game. You must do some ELO reactions to get up to speed on Jeff Lynne the mastermind behind the group.

One of those “mantra songs” only Harrison could write. The Wilburys made a lot a news back in the day and Vol. 1 was a huge international seller. The group also won an Emmy for best Rock Group. Today, when you read about history’s greatest “musical supergroups,” The Wilburys are always listed, usually as number one. The whole album is full of fun surprises, but you should hit their first single “Handle With Care.”

Us old folks were very aware of what this super group represented and how great they were if only for a moment or two. Poor Roy,R.I.P.! Roy had such a smooth voice! Here is another great band that you have not heard of though you will want to listen or react to song after song once you have. They are called Renaissance, a symphonic progressive rock and a unique band that had and do again a tremendous lead vocalist named Annie Haslam , who has a five octave range vocals! Try Ashes Are Burning or Black Flame or another Russia.

That just goes to show how much super music was around back in those days, to let these guys slip through the reactions. You can hear Roy Orbison sing his verse while they flash on the chair with his guitar in it. If you want to see a video of them with Roy actually there, try Handle with Care: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9VkppR8u7DFhnU.htmlsi=nymoQXuOGofgdw6v

Congrats on finding them...great, weren't they? A story I heard about the recording of the album was they started out each singing the lead on each song, and just seeing whose came out the best. But they all thought Roy Orbison was the best on ALL the songs they tried! So, they threw that idea out. I think I saw this on a documentary about the band.

Because Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne worked with him in the past, I wish Prince had been one of the Traveling Wilburys too. On a different note, the Traveling Wilburys get even more legendary on their video of the song "Wilbury Twist" which includes Eric Idle from Monty Python and the late, great John Candy in it.

Silas: you're young, so I don't know if you recognized Roy Orbison's (very unique) voice. But he died before the video was recorded, but is represented here by the guitar on the rocking rocking chair. Sadly, Harrison and Petty have also passed away making the lyrics emotional and oh so prescient. Sadly, I appreciate Harrison, Petty and Orbison much more now, than when they were recording and performing. What great talents, I miss em all & Prince, Michael Jackson, Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul & Mary) and all the many others.
