Today we figure out what is wrong with the intermittent sunroof on the Supercharged VR6 Corrado and try to fix it cheaply... How hard could it possible be???

Not even Ratarossa, Scotty Kilmer, The Car Wizard, Johnny the Car Ninja, Hoovie or Tavarish would dare tackle the insanity of resurrecting and modifying a 209,000 mile Corrado VR6 at the same time as a vintage Fiat Spider and maintaining a 241,000 mile 1.8t Jetta while tooling around in a 175,000 mile Mk4 R32 daily driver!! But I'm a special kind of crazy.
If you have an .:R32, Corrado, Fiat, Alfa, or some other weird quirky car that is a challenge to keep on the road, please share in the comments! If you've got a Sequoia, have pity on the other car owners whose vehicles will not outlast the rest of civilization as we know it.

I agree that the original, metall Corrado - sunroof is a terrible vulnerable construction and I red in our german corrado- forum that the glass- roof from a Passat or Golf is much less vulnerable. Anyway, I prefer to keep it original so I managed to repare the original roof. This means to deinstall the whole system out of the car, clean it thoroughly from old grease and dirt, replacing and reparing broken parts and - very important- using the original, expansive special sunroof- grease from VW. Now my original sunroof works fine again. Of course it was a little bit more complicated than written above. Because most sunroof- parts are out of stock by VW and elsewhere. I was saved by a collegue from our forum, who donated me some missing parts. It's a pity that " corrado farm parts" in the USA, who sometimes sold a complete repair- kit are out of stock also.

That sunroof grease must be made of the same unobtanium that the kluber grease used to lubricate G-laders on older G60 and G40 vehicles needed... stuff is pretty pricey for what it is!

Hi, Just to mention that now you have used a Golf Mk3 Motor, does your sunroof now open all the way back ?, I found that with a Mk3 motor the sunroof opened about 75-80% of the way, not as far as an original Corrado Motor.

No issue with that. If I recall correctly, you do need to index the motor before you install it so that it opens completely & properly in both directions. Something to do with the end limit micro switches inside the gear assemblies. So before you uninstall it from a mark three, you need to use the Allen tool to make sure the sunroof is in a completely closed position, so it is indexed at its neutral starting point. And do likewise with your Corrado sunroof assembly… It has to be at its neutral starting point before you install the replacement motor.

Yes, I did a follow up video on that awhile ago. Turns out that the actual OBD port itself had issues and was preventing scanners from being able to connect to the ECU, TCU, and ABS control unit. Once we repaired the OBD port, we were able to figure out that the evap purge valve was intermittently failing during operation. It tested fine using mechanical/electrical tests, but monitoring its operation using a scanner we were able to see that it randomly went crazy and the sensor readings were all over the place. Replaced that and cleared the codes, and all was well. We also found that there were a bunch of old-car issues that needed to be addressed. A small vacuum leak near the intake manifold needed a fresh hose clamp to rectify; the brake fluid was old and intermittently failed its resistance test, so that needed to be flushed; many sensor connectors under the hood needed to be cleaned and corrosion removed, treated with deoxit; both brake light switches needed to be replaced (brake pedal and e-brake pedal). Our brake booster is still technically working but it's 20 years old and the sensor in it is giving us intermittent codes too, so even though the booster itself is still good, the sensor only comes with a new booster, so we'll be replacing the booster soon.
