In art there's the wisdom of learning the rules first... and then breaking them Starting off with making a strange, janky "non-game" and excusing it as "just my style" doesn't cut it Even Kojima's early games were straightfaced (mostly)

There are games that don't need to be either - their only purpose is to be fun to make for their creator.

true, but if you intend on making something that you are hoping to live off of, then you need to have some understanding of the market and the consumerbase.
