Can we fix it? This Hornby Dublo 2-6-4 4MT tank Locomotive was described as "non-running". Let's see how Jenny repaired it.

Love any fix it video! Especially if it’s Hornby Dublo. So a great video for me. These are such lovely locomotives. I’ve had a « binge » session since this summer repairing Hornby Dublo eBay « non runners ». I bought 2 6231 Atholls (one of which is now 6234 Duchess of Abercorn in LMS 1946 blue), 3 0-6-2T, 2 4MT, and 7013 Bristol Castle. With a thorough service they all now run. Some of the magnets were very weak, as I can’t afford a Ronald Dodd remagnetising machine, I fitted neodymium magnets to those that needed them. I found a source of 7mm cube magnets from a company in Ireland. They are ridiculously inexpensive, the HD magnets are 14mm long so two of them do the job for most HD motors (though not the later ringfield type or the prewar horse shoe). The most expensive of the lot was 7013 at £37, it was just missing the wire between loco and tender. The others cost between £13 and £30. Such a joy to see them running again.

It has been re-magnitized before. It has an 'N' on one side of the magnet. I love these Dublo locos. 😊 This is a great video to watch. Thank you Jenny and the Cupboard Monkey.

A lot of hard earned knowledge and experience gone into the servicing done here! You do have a very nice calming manner as you go about your work too, almost hypnotic! I think it’s great to see a woman able to stand tall in what chauvinistically would be out of bounds to ladies in the dark past! Well done you for sharing your expertise in such a pleasant way! Cheers

I very much enjoy well shot, well explained and expertly delivered loco maintenence & repair videos, such as those uploaded by 00Bill & Dansmodelrailways, so yes, more of the same please! It's great to see well used and loved locos being brought back to life. It's one of my favourite aspects of the hobby.

Ref the rewinding of the armatures then simplicity itself. Nearly 60 years ago you could buy a jig for holding an armature and each lobe. I was more into slot cars and the ancient Mabuchi 16 armatures were, more or less, the same size as the Triang/ Hornby units. I'm guessing on the gauge but IIRC you might use 28swg or smaller. Self fluxing insulated wire (pink hued) saved a lot of work scraping and tinning. We used to shim the magnets to reduce the air gap ... might give more power in a loco motor but probably low gearing takes care of that anyway. So yes, easy as to rewind that size motor.

I love these old dublo engines, easy to work on, bullet proof and built to last. I started buying them earlier this year and have enough of a stable of them now that buying a remagnetiser was well worth it. Very often I buy the locos very cheaply for spares for my other engines and they usually end up as good runners after a little bit of a clean. So I end up with all these great engines and no spares. 😂 I wonder if I can say that about my modern built locos in 60 plus years. You are right about the screw Jenny, the original screws definately all came from the meccano parts bins. Many Years ago you did a video building a dublo 3 rail layout. Id love to see you revisit that at some point if its all still around. Cheers from Oz.

80054 was issued in 1954 and 80059 was intended to be issued in 1959, how 80033 fits in I don't see!!! I usually remove the brushes and give them a clean as they do sometimes get oily and stick. I use a thin tie wrap to push a stuck brush and a pipe cleaner (available from Hobbycraft) to clean the bush tube. Lets all keep Hornby Dublo (and Wrenn) running!!! Thanks for you videos Jenny

80033 was the 2-rail version.

I am aware that 80033 is the two rail version, having two of my own. I was clarifying the reason for the numbers of the three rail versions. There seems no logic to the number of the two rail version. 80059 release was delayed, maybe there were too many 80054 parts left in 1959.

Nice video Jenny... Just got into Hornby Dublo 3 rail after buying a job lot on an auction site. I love it, all serviceable, solid and proper mechanical engineering from way before I was even born! I've bought some cheap locos on ebay and then enjoyed stripping them back to bare metal, repaint and redecal (sacrilege, he he!). Most of the bits I need i got from ebay or 3d printed in some cases. Ronald Dodd has some great videos on Dublo and I bought one of his remagnetisers which has been a great purchase. Just starting on my layout now... damn point problems 🙄

Worth the ticket money just to see the old model engineering inside, redolent of an era of "Made in England", feet and inches and no computers.

These were great looking locos - captured the bulk and power of the prototype perfectly. I still have two of my old Dad’s - one of which is a 3 rail converted to two. But the one you had Jenny isn’t as new as you suggest: the late ones had ugly bulky plastic couplings, which yours didn’t. I think that the worn HD moulding simply reflected the standards of the day. Re-magnetisation does, however, make a huge difference to performance if a loco has been dormant for decades.

I love these old models my grandad has an old 3 rail version in a very battered condition, I’m going to offer to restore it for him at some point 😁 also completely off topic I love your signed iron maiden artwork, they’ve been a favourite of mine since I was a child 😁

Thats quite a smooth runner. Have you thought of using one of those Gü pudding dishes for tiny parts? I swear by them as you know the part is in there and not lost to the carpet gods.

HD are pretty 'bomb-proof' and virtually indestructible, I have a couple of HD 3-rail pre-war loco's that are running as well today as they did when new and as for the later (1960's) 'ring-field' models, well they still haul full length trains with ease despite being around/over 60 years old.

The only issue with pre war models was they often suffer with Mazac rot.

Loved this, I've become a huge fan of Hornby Dublo 3 rail over the last couple of years and have built up a decent collection. I do currently have 2 060 tank locos not working. I'm not sure if you would like to have a go at repairing one then I would gladly pay you to do it? Or I have a Dutchess of Montrose with damaged connection rods and I've untested it so not sure if it's a runner bought as spares or repair?
