Can We Keep Up On A Pro Cyclist's Interval Session?

Professional cyclists train a lot, often using intense interval sessions to boost their power and cycling stamina. Hank and Ollie have been to Arizona and attempted to join Matthew Riccitello from Israel Premier Tech on his low cadence, over-under threshold training session. Is it possible to maintain his power and cadence up Mount Lemmon? Will Hank and Ollie hold on, or will the pro training session be too much for them?

The fact that they held on for a full interval just shows that Hank and Ollie are insanely fit. Low 5 watts per kilo for 5 minutes, and then around 6 for another minute, able to catch back on for the next rep? That's stronger than the strongest cyclist in town for most places in the world.

If he was 5W/kg @55kg, he was doing 275W. Kicking it to 6W/kg takes the pro to 330W. The crazy part is only 1min recovery. Any interval I usually do I have half time in recovery, meaning 60s on 30s off. 6min on 1min off is brutality

I once managed to stay on a wheel of a local pro doing his workout. The trick: it was his easy zone 2 day. It definitely wasn't a zone 2 for me. Luckily there was a strong headwind from which he sheltered me. However... to add insult to the injury... during a short steep climb he stood up in the saddle and surfed the internet, or sent some messages... who knows, I was gassed.

I once managed to get on the wheel of Hugh Carthy, not long before he went to race in Spain. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself for about 10 seconds, until he sat up, took off his helmet and fiddled with the straps, all the time pedalling at the same cadence. Then, he fastened his helmet up and smoothly rode away from me.

lol Reminds me of the one time I ran into Geriant Thomas in the wild in Zwift. I didn't know who was coming up on my butt near the Mall Sprint on the London map, but I was determined to give whoever it was a run for their money... and was smoked within seconds as I was putting out my all and he apparently was just buzzing along without a care in the world. Humbling, to put it mildly.

Quoting roadcyclist1: "...he would destroy Lionel...don't kid yourself..." You do realize that Lionel Sanders not only has the KOM on this (which is considered one of the most competitive Strava hills in the entire U.S. ) and he has had the record for quite some time, and that his time is faster than .... you guessed it.... the guy in this video (Matthew Riccitello) who holds the number two spot after taking it from Sam Long (who I am sure you know is also a top triathlete). Lionels KOM beat Phil Gaimon by about 4 minutes when Phil was in pretty peak shape, if I recall correctly. Lionel also beat Drake Duel by a full two minutes who is considered the U.S. version of Britains Andrew Feather. Yes, I do think Riccitello will eventually get Lionels KOM.... probably even this year.... but he has not got it yet despite a tough effort, so Lionel deserves that respect for holding one of the toughest hill KOMs in this country for several years now. If somebody could beat him, they would. Its not like pro cyclists arent constantly poaching KOMs all the time despite the fact that sone people seem to think its controversial.

@@markachapman486maybe you didn't notice (12:10), but around the end of the video they said they tried at first (and they showed a clip of them at low rpm). Obviously, that must have lasted only a couple of minutes, at most, and then they were just trying to survive at any rpm 😂

Ollie: dropped to dropper once again! Ollie's shaping up as GCN's best climber. Great effort chaps. (ETA: I don't know if Andrew Feather is actually part of GCN or a regular guest? If regular then I suppose Ollie is GCN's second best climber)

I weigh 8kg more than Mathew and rarely even hit 5w/kg unless I'm "sprinting"... absolutely nuts how long pros can effortlessly hold this power!
