Despite their obvious cheapness, Mehano locos always seem to be surprisingly easy to work on and get running reasonably well. Have nothing but respect towards them.

Just a tip, that weight in the middle you should probably hot glue it in place otherwise its going to move and hit the armature at some point again.

American Track and Train put it out in the 60s before AHM picked it up. Model Power got it from them and retooled the shell so that the screw isn't poking thru the top of the hood. I have both the AT&T model and the Model Power one that I installed DCC into it.

A little tip I learned while repairing cameras. A white terrycloth towel on the worktop, drop a screw, and it won't bounce. Keeps from spending half an hour looking for the dropped screw or spring.

This engine uses the same type of motor as most AHM C-liner and BL-2 diesels used. (the very last C-liners got changed to the same type of drive as the GP18 uses). What's amusing about the engine is the body scales out to closer to S or O scale, a little switcher like that should be about half as tall as the boxcars it's pulling. But it was probably designed to fit around the motor.

Good work. A Very nice runner. Mine being the union pacific type but exactly the same model. Mine had similar problems just needed a good cleaning and what's funny is the motor growls. I laughed when mune did I was like who needs sound lol . they are good switchers especially when using them to build a consist.

Great video! I think that Kadee #27 couplers works for these type of locomotives.

General Electric in Peterborough has a little train which is uses to push the flatbeds around for the big electric motors that they make they were still using it up to a couple years ago it's pretty neat

This is an old video but adding a tip. These AHM's often run noisy because of that Worm gear being to high or too low on the shaft, often nudging it one way or the other removes a lot of that noise. It'll take experimenting but from my experience the Worm usually ends up sitting to low on the shaft due to use and maybe being dropped. Hope this helps!
