In the third part of their summer-long quest to get to the heart of the UK's condition, John Harris and John Domokos head to Boston in Lincolnshire. They find Brexit voters who still think no one is listening to them and Polish people feeling ever more unwelcome. But in London, protesters against Donald Trump offer a ray of hope and the prospect of something that might finally heal the country's wounds

4:27 the woman who needs a mobility scooter to get around and was refused a PIP (personal independence payment) is blaming other disabled people instead of the top hatted Tories who bled the country dry in the name of "austerity". This is tragic. The same Tories convinced her that her problems are really the fault of "foreigners"

It's interesting. The lady in the blue dress exemplifies this problem: Submissiveness to authority. She has problems with the DWP, so she blames other powerless poor people and not the DWP. Because the DWP symbolise Authority, they have power, and these people worship power above all else. And that is what seals their doom... and ours too, however we might feel, we still have to share a country with people like that, they have votes just the same as us, we have to either deal with their cockamimie desicions or get them to change their minds.

I used to think this. However, obesity is more a disease of poverty than a disease of the rich. You also need to ask, is she in the mobility scooter because she's obese? Or is she obese because she's in the mobility scooter? If she suffered an injury and maintained her previous calorie intake whilst being unable to move as much, her weight would have ballooned like there's no tomorrow.

@@erzsebetnilsson580 There are many laws that Parliament and local constabularies could put into place to help the local fisherman, despite whatever laws the EU has in place. Ex. Gravity... As human beings, we are limited in what we can do while on earth. Gravity plays an important role in keeping us safely on the earth's surface and not floating off into obscurity. The laws the EU had come up with is a general vision that will help all the nations involved. That doesn't mean that countries, within their own boundaries, can't decide how to operate fully without conflicting with those laws for the many. The same with gravity. We operate despite the constraints of being pulled towards the surface of the ground. It's really sad to watch, the problems the people interviewed are complaining about is nothing to do with Europe. Austerity imposed by our sovereign government as a consequence of the global financial crisis which started not in Europe, but in the USA (parented by Thatcher and Reagan) is the problem.

People throughout this country made their minds up to vote leave long before the referendum came about, they watched as govt closed their industries and put them on the dole to benefit Germany, only our financial district benefited from Europe, then came the Lisbon treaty which removes national sovereignty because to leave after 2017 we'd need the permission of 27 other states, that sealed the fate of the referendum pal, we need another tier of govt like a hole in the head and when that tier is dominated by foreigners we don't need it for anything. You being an Irishman should get that better than most.

"Parented by Reagan and Thatcher "?? Well, what happened? Because in two very short years the economy in the U.S. is booming. Every one else's, not so much. Our economies are not tied together and Reagan and Thatcher were over 30 years ago! Socialism is what is killing the workers. My question is, did the U.S. force austerity upon you, or did the E.U.? Also, why did the U.S. not go down the same path? Oh well, I'm sure you know best. Good luck. All honesty, I'm rooting for the U.K.

Leftardism is the problem and we have three parties of leftard liberals, the vote was LEAVE we need to get on with that regardless, 45 years of enslavement to the EU and I personally have yet to feel one single benefit of membership, unless you're telling me 2 redundancies and 28 jobs around the world outside of Europe was a benefit as my wages at home diminished to such an extent thanks to cheap foreign labour I needed to be far removed from my kids for months at a time just to provide. My friends here in the UK suffered similar but stayed home on top up benefits which disappeared as their kids reached adulthood, impoverishing them, every one of them voted LEAVE.

I'm 4th generation Polish/Irish/Caribbean mixed (70% ish Irish) I speak perfect English and get on with everyone, but sometimes people are scared of me because of my mix-raced skin, often I am walking down the street minding my own business and someone will look at me and panic almost, it's really disheartening and it'shame because I would never harm someone and yet our country is so divided that we are living in fear constantly. My fear personally is being mugged, It's happened to me before and I've had some near misses (being followed and having to walk into main streets) I think we should try and make the best of what's happened to us, even though the future looks bleak. Brexiteers wanted what's best for their country and the Remainers wanted to bring the country together more, 2 respectable things in of their selves but we can't rely on politicians to carry out our wishes because be honest, when have any of them actually kept their promises? They continually cut and cut opportunity for the working classes, and we have 650 MP's on £70k a year while people who need to work to study are getting paid as low as £3.70 an hour.

Why do the places with the least immigration have the strongest feeling against it. Yet the places (cities) that experience the most immigration are happy with it. I think the answer is fear. The Treaty of Rome - Arguments about enlargement: For 💡 The Treaty of Rome was a ticket to greater economic growth because it started to break down the barriers to trade and investment that had existed in Europe since the 1930s. 💡 The Treaty enshrined the dream of a united Europe that would make it impossible for European countries to go to war again. 💡 The Treaty was an incredible feat of diplomacy that paved the way for European reconciliation and the spread of democracy. Against 💡 The Treaty set out an impossible goal of creating a united Europe - ignoring the cultural and linguistic barriers that divide the continent. 💡 The Treaty was fundamentally confused: while at one level it aimed to promote economic cooperation, it tried to do this through an undemocratic and unnecessary political apparatus. 💡 The institutions that were created are distant and unfamiliar. In their original form they allowed many decisions to be made behind closed doors thus discouraging open debate and participation.

"I thought we stood a chance at getting nearer to how we were." That's quite revealing. It's interesting listening to people try to explain why they voted Leave. Their reasons always seem a bit vague. The EU is just this distant, uncaring, unaccountable institution that has power over their lives, it represents multinational corporations and globalisation and foreign influence. So when they are given the opportunity to get rid of it, they take it. Understandably they think that it might give them some control back.

With the Polish you are highlighting one of the issues, there are not enough jobs available now for even half of those born in the UK, factories have closed, mines closed, no typing polls anymore, computers are doing jobs that people used to do, so in areas like Boston there are a few shop jobs, office jobs, cleaning jobs, a few factories to work in and thats about it, its the same everywhere, 500 people going for each job available, whether its really 500 or 50 does not matter that much to those who dont get the jobs, so when they see people come over from eastern Europe taking many of those jobs they rightly get a bit pissed off, its not racist against Polish people its years of frustration applying for jobs and seeing non UK people getting the jobs. MPs lie when they say there is no excuse for people not to be working, there are enough jobs out there, those that are looking for work know damn well that is just not true.

The woman on the mobility scooter who feels she is owed her disability allowance but is blaming others who don't deserve it doesn't appear to realize that many people would look at her and think exactly the same. She probably would vote for a government who encouraged everyone to view everyone else suspiciously as scroungers.... but when the government she voted for in fact does what she voted it in for and sees *her* as a scrounger and removes here allowance, instead of blaming them or herself for her myopic self interest instead then blames the EU or immigrants or whoever... "Nearer to how we were..." There are two kinds of people who supported the Brexit and I hate generalizing here but some were concerned mostly concerned about the refugee crisis. I could go into that, the reason for it and why I believe that they blame the EU for things it was not able to control but that's a different story. The other side of Ukip wanted control. But in a ruthless, undiplomatic way. Almost... Extreme. Radical. Is this not something I would usually say but this decison was a mistake. It was a reaction to a feeling of dislocation. It's a reaction of people from the countryside. From rural areas. Cities with a growing older population - but not with youth. The young leave... The old stay behind. People who think the EU is the issue but talk about lobbyism, about failed governments, about wanting to go back to the old days. This is false. In itself it is simply false. And it divides the country as much as the arrogance of people who don't even try to understand this reaction. Everyday we drift apart. This will end up destroying us, if nothing is done about it.

That way we can be enriched without causing too much tension, it works out for everyone. Its just those who insist uncontrollable levels can coexist when we all know thats near impossible... honestly if that was proposed tomorrow I can see the masses hugely in support. And then we can implement a controlled immigration system where professionals can apply to live just like the states.

Journalism of the standard is so poor to say the least. Utterly ridiculous. Do a documentary and find both sides of the argument with no prejudices. Allow the people to speak their minds. Absorb yourself from it as much as possible being a journalist. The author of documentary failed miserably. He shdnt ever have a job the Guardian except that is their standard and if so then I now know. Will be careful anytime I read or watch their which frankly will be very minimal now

The comments on these videos are embarrasing. There are so many remain voters using their 'moral superiority' to look down on leave voters. It's so condescending. It's people like this, for if there were another referendum, that will cause the country to vote leave with no deal.

I live in France. Here if you do not speak and read French, you get no help and you will not get a job. No job, no social security card, no benefits end no sympathy. Is there a problem in France due directly to EU citizens coming here? No, but they would also vote to leave the EU tomorrow...... the politicians would never give the French people this as an option, because they all enjoy the potential gravy train once their domestic political careers have over.

Lincolnshire folk will keep voting Tory even when it's that government that is hurting them. That bloke wouldn't have that opposing the multi national corporations is left wing. Not ALL lincolnshire folk but the area has returned a majority of Tory Mp's since the dawn of time. Even some of the Labour supporters who live here are old school eurosceptical Bennites such as myself. And there's nothing wrong with that. Ask jezza ;)
