Amazon is terrible, but the EU is actually doing something to try and make sure they do not take over everything. I don't get why they feature in this Brexit video - it is not like the UK leaving the EU will make Amazon go away or make them behave better in the UK. Most likely Amazon will be even worse in the way the operate in the UK.

@@bzdtemp Actually when i hear "Sovereignty", in my mind, they are talking about freedom to screw both the working class and environment at which the most popular EU regulations directed, and YES, if it wasn't for the EU and the German labour system i could've been denied toilet time and 2 minute stop to drink back in 2012 when they first came here, in places like leipzig it was complete chaos with weekly demonstrations they tried to take advantage of the fact they have less minimum wage there in the East . Amazon is a criminal compony only those who worked there know what i mean .

Really interesting reporting - thank you. I'm so often stuck inside an echo-chamber of remain voters, so it's interesting to get a glimpse of 'the other side'. I identify with your comment massively. I'm a London-based remain voter who has lived and studied in the EU when younger, now married to a French woman, have a social circle that is made up of a very diverse range of nationalities (EU and beyond), work in a fairly pro-remain professional environment and consume very anti-Brexit media (print, broadcast, online/social media). When the result of the 2016 vote landed, I was absolutely shocked. I totally never saw it coming and could not understand why people had voted to leave. Two (and a bit) years on, I'm still coming to terms with why the outcome went the way it did and have been trying my hardest to understand the arguments of leave voters. I have heard absolute nothing that has convinced me that leaving will be good for the UK - in fact, my panic is increasing with every day that passes. HOWEVER... I'm trying my best to listen to views from all parts of the UK on why people chose to vote to exit the EU. I really want to engage with someone who doesn't just shout me down or who comes up with empty platitudes of "take back control" or "sovereignity" without knowing what they mean. I feel bad when I sound even remotely patronising or judgmental as I know there are people on the remain side who are equally uninformed and ignorant on issues. I would really like to sit-down and listen to a leave voter, understand their viewpoint and to find some common-ground. It would perhaps be a bit wrong for me to label all leave votes as "protest votes" against austerity and political exclusion - there are a wide range of reasons people voted the way they did. This video series highlights many of them but most of those interviewed seem to see themselves as underdogs and view the EU as being responsible for the ills of UK society. This is because they don't understand what the EU is or indeed what the benefits of membership are. This is not a failure of the voters - it's a failure of the media and the EU to get their message heard over the years. This video takes me out of my echo-chamber of Remainers but what I'm hearing makes me want to run back into my bubble of sanity. It's not right, but until someone is willing to put the argument to Leave to me in a way that can respond credibly to reasonable scrutiny, I want to bury my head and wake up from this absolute divisive nightmare.

Rax Lakhani - there are plenty of youtube clips, radio talk shows and TV documentaries that give a comprehensive selection of Brexiteer views. Being English and living with my French wife in France we can only look in in dismay at the way the UK has divided over Brexit. The UK has always been 'one foot in' and has (IMO) always had preferential treatment from the EU. Despite the many problems within the EU I think it has far more good than bad going on and UK Government could have done more to change it within rather than initiating an option to come out. Regardless of 'In' or 'Out' the Political situation in the UK is a shambles with Westminster now the laughing stock of the world: the worst Government in modern history coupled with the worst opposition in modern history. Sadly the UK is destined for a generation of misery, disruption and discontent. Not because it will be out of the EU but because of the ongoing split between the leavers and remainers - It is a social and political disaster.

Isn't anything unexpected, a lot of varieties in what to be angry and frustrated about (many rightfully so) fuel by a lot of indignant and pride as well. Easy to just point them at an erroneous "foreign" target and let it run. I don't think you live in an echo-chamber or bubble simply because you haven't met much of those whom have difference experience, there are subtle differences. And I also don't think there's much "common ground" to be found that will make much of a difference. It's like thinking Creationist and Evolutionary Biology can get along by finding common ground. You are talking about an entrench stance that isn't going away simply because you can empathize with someone plight.

ctho It's a shame that the politicians don't just follow people like John Harris around. They seem to prefer their own selective echo chambers. It doesn't matter if it's Nigel Farage or Jeremy Corbyn. Brexit is possibly a result of a political class totally out of touch with ordinary regional voters, a process developing over years. The EU politicians are even further away. How would they know what life is like working in an Amazon fulfilment centre?
@ITOWords

E W when we have a recession after leaving, remind yourself of your post, "what is there to think about." There is a hell of a lot to think about. How you put 'Islamic terrorism' at the doors of the EU is beyond me, as for immigration you can expect immigration to continue post Brexit as Farage himself has repeatedly said that he supports it and wants it to continue - which will ensure businesses don't have to increase their wages as the labour market continues to grow. You can just expect fewer immigrants from the EU and more from the world beyond.

Of course they can take workers from elsewhere. The WHO reckon there are 3 BILLION people who live on world poverty levels. Vast numbers of these would jump at the chance of undercutting the average EE migrant, who looks expensive by comparison. That's what globalism is. It is the relentless hunt for cheaper costs, which means greater profits.

The problem is that the leavers are angry sheep following a wolf, too old to see the wolf for what it is, and they've stabbed their young in the back in the process - it's the lambs who in the years down the line will really suffer. Or, to lose the analogy, bigotry and prejudice is more and more apparent, especially when the two sides clash on social media. We've talked a lot about financial issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if this mess turns violent - let's suggest the leavers don't get their wet dreams what happens then? I'm not sure we'll be a peaceful country then

The reason northern/midlands towns (where I am from) are destitute is a combination of Thatcher destroying the industry and not replacing it, then New Labour's decision to outsource public sector work to private companies, then we enjoyed the back lash of the American Sub Prime Mortgage crisis, with the icing on the cake being 8 years of Conservative austerity. We've allowed our governments to tear us apart and I fail to see how immigrants or the EU are responsible.

"The one thing that this Brexit vote has accomplished, is a stronger cohesion of the EU. There's no more talk of Grexit, Frexit, ... or any other country who might've had any ambitions of leaving the EU. And all the remaining countries are seeing how easily things could go wrong, if you're no longer part of the EU." That's one analysis of a political commentator, who thinks we should thank Britain for helping the rest of the EU understand the strengths of the union. He goes on to say that the EU has nothing to gain (at least not in the long term) by 'punishing' Britain. No point in having weakened states in your union (if Britain were to decide to come back) "They'll have a hard enough time, as is". But we shouldn't just 'forget the whole thing' either, and just let Britain rejoin, without there being a large majority of Brits, convinced about why it's better to be part of the EU. I think what he meant, was that it would be like admitting an unwilling participant again. And there's quite a few issues the EU hasn't been able to move forward on, because they keep getting blocked by Britain. So, even if there was a second referendum, it wouldn't be wise of the EU to let Britain back in, as it would give the message of "just throw a tantrum, and you'll get what you want". I think he might have a point. Whether you agree with it or not, it is how the majority of the EU will reason. And I'm afraid Britain might be facing a tough few years ahead...

If you compare the EU with the government of the UK...well, let's put it this way: If the UK crashes out and then wants to re-join, it would have to reform its election system and government, because it is actually not democratic enough to fulfil the current EU standards.

At 7:17 John Harris asks a prospective Labour MP: "So those big sheds that ring our towns you know what goes on there and you think about it a lot?" What exactly are you implying, John? That you don't, even though you have the license to roam the country as a full-time professional journalist? That it's strange that a prospective Labour MP should be familiar with industrial factories and warehouses? That it's strange that a prospective Labour MP should be concerned with working conditions? Respect to Gill Ogilvie and Lisa Nandy (regardless of how she voted in the referendum) for remembering that the Labour Party is meant to represent the white working class and would have been in power for far longer if it had done so.

Pros of using a food bank versus being on welfare: 1. People are giving their help voluntarily, not being forced through taxation. Surely non-violence is better than violence. 2. Money isn't being spent on expensive middle-men in the government bureaucracy. Con of using a food bank versus being on welfare: It's harder to ignore the fact that you're living at someone else's expense, which most people find embarrassing if they're honest. Let's face it: that's the reason that this whole topic is so controversial.

Are you one of those people who thinks in terms of tribalism? “All the other tribes are bad and everything they say and do is bad, but my tribe is good and everything my tribe say and do is good... if my tribe elected a tomato plant as it’s leader I would vote for it because it’s a good tomato plant because it’s my tribes tomato plant” Sadly this is how most people think, like mindless Zombies strolling around murmuring “my tribe, my tribe good. Also, the Commission, if that's what you're referring to, is only one part of the structure; the European Parliament and Council also have significant power over EU regs and directives and both are made up of elected reps. An independent Scotland would not be paying towards the £200 billion new trident nuclear missiles and submarines, over £54 billion HS2 rail line from Birmingham to London and the up to £5.4 billions doing up Westminster etc. Also Scotland could spend a similar amount on defense to other small countries and save billions of pounds on defense spending. Different spending decisions will be made by an independent Scottish government in Edinburgh than would be made by Westminster in London. Westminister Infrastructure spending has favoured London and the south east to the detriment to the rest of the UK. You just have to look at the cancellation of the electrification of the Cardiff - Swansea and Manchester - Leeds railway line at the same time as Westminster gives the go-ahead for the £32 billion crossrail 2 for London. After £15 billion was spent on crossrail in London. Scotland is a rich country and would prosper with access to all of it's money and better local governance from the Scottish parliament in Edinburgh. For example the Scottish government was against the Iraqi war which was a disaster in lives, money and encourage terrorism by destabilising the whole area. If you really believe that Scotland is that poor after 300 year of control from Westminster that is all the more reason that Scotland would be better to become an Independent country just like newzealand, Norway and Canada etc.

The contempt with which Brexiteers feel they are held in by 'political and cultural elites' is one of the reasons for Brexit. It isn't a very compelling argument to say 'you're all idiots' for wanting a change in direction. In the same way Hillary didn't win many votes for calling half of America a 'basket of deplorables'.
