Can we salvage this broken B8 S4 Transmission? Paul and I replaced burnt clutch packs in an attempt to save the DSG. Even after that, the DSG was never right. In this video Im going to swap solenoids from another mechantronics unit to see if we can get it fixed? Or at least see what happens #advancefleet #humblemechanic

Judging by how it shifts after you replaced the solenoids - I highly suspect the engine ECU is poorly calibrated from the tune and the torque level communicated to the TCU is wrong, that's why you get the revs jumping up/down after a shift as the TCU sees the clutch start to slip and ramps the clutch pressure up to compensate. That's also probably what killed the clutch pack originally. It also causes it to jerk as you come to a stop due to the adaptation shifting the calibration points because the clutch was slipping under full power.

@@BrianKariukiNo amount of DSG tuning will fix the problem if the torque level communicated is false. When you understand it from a software and hardware perspective, you realise it cannot be fudged it to make it work. In VAG DSG there's no torque > pressure to be fudged.

While you have done the Mechatronic repair and the clutch pack, there's a modified wiring loom and sensor pickup in the rear half of the transmission that give problems. This does require the transmission to be stripped to replace it, there's a couple of specialist tools needed. Afterwards the vehicle needs a software update to reflect the change along with the basic settings.

Drive it for about 30km going for as many shifts up and down as you can, especially on hills and with varying speeds. That way the controller will learn the shifting pattern and timing of the new valving, which should fix a lot of those issues, and also bleed the solenoid circuits properly as well. Otherwise see if the VAG tool can set the controller to relearn, which is the same thing, just less fun.

You can't swap the tcu cause it's component protected, these tcus fail regularly, the ribbon connector part melts causing all sorts of issues, best solution is to clone the tcu to another with pcmflash or flash the correct frf in odis and activate online. *I do it all the time for transmission places 😉😂 Also needs basic after any solenoids are changed as its previous learnt settings are based on the older solenoids/cable resistance. Its easy to swap to manual.. I'd do that. I've done a few manual to dsg swaps for customers. Just turn off gateway install list auto, abs longcode auto off, ecu longcode auto off. May need to flash ecu with manual frf as some ecu flashs are written uniquely for auto or manual.

I would reset the transmission computer so it has to learn everything again. Also, do any post repair resets or matching gearbox to vehicle, then run with it till it blows. If as you say your "gut" tells you it isn't 100%, then it really is of no use to anyone, so nothing lost by running it till it blows. Then put the manual gearbox in.

I did something similar with Profi Performance except they tested the solenoids and replaced any that were slow with new ones and also cleaned out the Valvebody that had clutch material in it and a crushed/pinched gasket. Also replaced the wiring harness with the newest “F” version. So far so good - knock on wood after about a year of driving and an APR DSG tune (it was already ECU stage 1) and it is shifting better than ever.

Your uncertainty about it is pretty proof positive that very few people have done with this trans what you’re doing now. Sounded like there was still a bit of clutch slip on the test run? Might be worth running the adaptation reset to let the TCU relearn the clutch biting points. These cars are always a bit messy coming to a stop, only way to solve that is to have 1st gear reactivated in the TCU tune. This is usually an option when getting it done, the tuner should always ask whether you want it or not. Once it's done you will find it will slip back naturally into 1st at around 8mph instead of trying to holding 3rd and eventually pulling away in 2nd.

Im not exactly sure how the DSGs but I know most transmissions can be clunky for not being calibrated or a computer isnt cooperating. When I tuned a few vehicles and altered the shift points, it was almost always clunky and harsh until the computer learned my driving style and the harshness went away and the shifting was smooth. I know DSGs are infinitely more complex than 8HP70 or 65RFE.

First calibrate the timing ("relearn" in the vcds,...). Different solenoids behave differently due to tolerances, plus when one of them was failing its calibration for sure went out of whack when the tcu tried to compensate the failing valve before it throw the fault code. Then drive it in varying conditions so it fine tunes itself for tye real driving condition. Only then judge the performance.

Also I'm pushing well over 500hp The speed of shifts holds the power and pulls it into the 10s. Also the fast shifts help in a road course scenario. Dual pulley, long tube headers with full exhaust, throttlebody, ported supercharger, killer chiller, high flow hpfp, e40 blend with watermeth. Also has skidplates for the snow in my area.
