You Can't Eat The Grass

You Can't Eat The Grass

Күн бұрын

This is the final Farmers Market of the year for us to sell Tulips. They are the first big flower crop of the year, and so far in our previous two markets with them, Tulip Bouquets have sold really well. We feel confident we can still sell lots of Tulips, the problem is we don't have the same quantity of them anymore which will limit the sales. Serina also has some health difficulties this weekend that could get in the way of us getting to market. And on the topic of getting in the way, our cat Buddy does an excellent job of getting in the way this week. He normally knows to use the paths, but he has been loving nap time in the clover. Bad Cat, he can be forgiven though cause he so handsome, lol. So come join us while we battle the wind, and try to avoid a disaster weekend, where we would miss out on the farmers market and our last chance to sell our first flower crop of the year!

Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

Hey. My name is Colleen. I have a flower farm /florist in Victoria BC. I have an idea for you. I sell what I call “ pixie” bouquets at my stand for $10. I use all the beautiful but short stems that would otherwise be pretty unusable. The broken bits from making the taller bouquets. They are super popular and sell like hotcakes! Good luck! Love your channel!!

Serena you are a GENIUS for investing in the dried flowers. Firstly, they are less maintenance than fresh bouquets. Secondly, they beautify your farmstand and marketstand, so when fresh flowers are finishing up or sold out your table still look well stocked. And thirdly, THEY SELL! Congrats to you both but, Serina girl, i thought you were cray cray putting so much time into dried flowers during the mothers day crush ...and here they are saving your butts two weeks later lol. May the $1000+ weeks continue guys!

So happy to see all the fresh……and a lot of dried flowers selling at the market, Serina. You did an amazing job with the bouquets in spite of your lack of flowers. The white weed is beautiful and if it hold up in a vase smells like lilacs, it’s a winner. The oat-like grass in front of it was pretty nice too. You really need some fatigue mats in front of your sink and where you make your bouquets. Standing on a cement or any hard floor will hurt your knees and back. May I suggest you consider a higher counter (maybe kitchen counter height or whatever is comfortable for you) for your stem cutter and bouquet wrapping. Eliminate some of the bending. Flower buckets on the lower table so you’re not reaching up, but workspace higher. Have you looked into Kraft paper sleeves or the pot sleeves if you need larger hole? More costly, but time-saving……no folding, no stapling. Yes, you need to work smarter, not harder. Not easy to figure out, but I’m sure you’ll get there. I’m sure you’ll have some little flashes now and then that will make things easier and you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it sooner. Happens to all of us. Usually happens to me in the kitchen and I wonder why I didn’t think of it 50 years ago. LOL. So glad you had a good weekend after the dismal expectations. 😊💖🌸

Ornamental grasses might be helpful for your filler, even hosta or herbs. You might consider wearing a back support belt. We're here to help you succeed. I envy you. I wish I had started this type business years ago. Take care. When the kids are a bit older, they can do the little jobs like folding paper & taking the debris to the compost.

Great job guys! Serina I suggest checking out a flower called 'St.John's wort' (Hypericum perforatum in latin). I used to collect its flower to make tea as a child, it has got calming effects. Now as an adult I have finally replanted it in my garden and used in the bouquet for my MIL this weekend. You will love the thick structural stems, they really help with holding the shape with the more other delicate flowers. Once they properly settle, they come back year after year and take over almost like borache does. Definitely check it out. They smell lovely too. The height is around 30-50 cm, perfect medium size.

Note: Hypericum typically/classically blooms on the week of summer solstice. I live in the same area as these folks and my hypericum isn’t super close to blooming. Definitely an amazing plant to grow in the Okanagan - I get 2-3 harvests per season of the blooms. Bees love.

I love your honesty. The farmer as dishwasher, lol. Bonus, all the bouquet making tips. I really enjoy the market bits. I used to have a booth at the Nakusp market, long before it all became regulated. Among other things I sold perennial bedding plants. Now in my new village location I just started selling some bedding plants. So far tomato sales have paid for the bales of Sunshine mix and a delivery of manure. Bonus, one gets to meet other gardeners.

Recognizing that you guys have to get better work flows, is important. Feeling disappointment in yourself about not sticking to changes you guys have decided to do differently is reasonable, but don't dewll in that disappointment. It will hold you back, hold you down. Take the lesson of almost loosing the day to needed medical attention, and begin again, as many times as it takes, begin the day new, workong towards the goals that will benefit your entire family, and equally important, benefit your income. You guys are inspiring, a lesson for those of us who dream of doing what you are living now. You have a good thing going don't dwell in mistakes, you got this.

Hi there! Your farm and bouquets are so beautiful. I also love your channel and your cat helpers. I'm a new time gardener here and this is actually my first comment ever on a video. I use to be a floral designer so I know all the hard work and late nights that goes into prepping flowers to arrange. I love the idea of growing your own flowers to make bouquets out of. You are super hardworking and inspiring to watch! I didn't read through all the comments, so I'm not sure if someone suggested this yet but thought I would maybe suggest something that might save a little time. For those precut papers you have that you fold to put the bouquets in..if you angle the paper with a tip of the paper at the top and lay the bouquet you made on it you could use natural raffia ribbon(twine or anything really) and bow tie around it and not have to prefold the paper. We did this a lot especially around holidays when it was extra busy and it was super quick for us! Also you might not need to use a rubber bands to hold the flowers together so that's another step saved (and less ouchies for when the rubber bands break on you LOL.) I know its an extra expense but might be worth it if it saves you time :) I also think it looks quite nice, because to me it kinda looks more like a gift with the bow tie.. especially for people buying flowers for others. Just a suggestion to maybe try and see if it works for you/ saves you some time. Cheers!

I love seeing all of the hard work pay off for you guys. It has been awesome to watch just how far you have come. The dried bouquets are super smart even if you didn't sell any of them it would still be smart to bring a handful of them so you never look like you are sold out. They make your booth look extra full and inviting about a lot of people think they are real walk up and realize they are dried and end up buying them Anyhow. When you walk through Pike's market in Seattle some of the sellers have bundles of dried flowers and they are always so beautiful and many people buy them. You guys look so happy and not stressed in this video.

This channel is a huge wakeup call to urban dwellers who think that "someone somewhere" will always produce their food.I live in rural Brazil and even here the farmers are beginning to planta only for their own families. The financial risk is too large. (And no one uses chemicals in our region!) How long willthis courageous couple continue to depend on flowers and veggies at the market for their income? At somepoint they are going to open an on-site coffee shop surrounded by nbeautiful flowers!

For a filler buy spirea bushes. They come in yellow ish green foliage and darker foliage. In the spring it has pretty flowers on it. The foliage is delicate. You can also reproduce it too by layering a branch if it. In fact a lot of times it does it naturally. I think flower hills farms buys it pre cut paper for bouquets. Not sure though.

Well done! So on the prepping ahead of time, while you’re cleaning the flowers could you start grouping the bouquets since they go back in the cooler anyways? Sure seems like grabbing a bunch of pre-grouped flowers and adding the fillers and banding them would be a lot quicker in the end. Just a thought. 🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷

Maybe you should invest in some early flowering shrubs? Or at the very least some shrubs that leaf out early so you know that you will have fillers whenever you need them? Also I’m not sure what kinds of tulips you plant but I do know there are early, mid season, and late flowering tulips? I’m not sure of the cost but could you covert one of your cold frames into a traditional greenhouse so you can force some flowers into blooming when no one else has flowers to sell? Just some thoughts, and I don’t even know if you’ll see this comment. One more thought--- could your daughter maybe do some folding of your flower sleeves for you ? Give her a little job so she feels she’s helping mom and if she could do enough ahead of time it could free up some time for you? 🌸💚🙃

Some guy I saw on Instagram showed a great tip. He put a brush in a drill and washed his buckets really fast. Just a thought 😉

You might consider getting a rolling seat for gardeners to use when cutting stems. It would save wear and tear on your back

Standing on concrete is one of the hardest things on a back. I use pallets to stand on. If the height is too high then cut the side boards down and frame in for support. This made a big difference in my back.

If you could find some way to store the wraps long term folding bouquet wraps could be a winter job. And there is nothing wrong with just tulips in a bouquet. It would make things easier, and some people prefer just a bunch of tulips.

Please use a big big pail for your recycled leaves and cut them into it. It will make cleaning easier. The height of the sink and work table Better shoes and maybe a waist guard. Adjust your standing positions as and when. Eat and rest ,rest!!! Money is important and health is too!!✌😘

How about trying to wear a Velcro back brace? An adjustable one. I started to wear one when I garden and it has helped a lot.

Congrats....great market! I have to admit, I usually think of dried flowers in the fall because retail bombards buyers with red, oranges, creams, and browns, but your dried flowers are gorgeous. So many pretty, bright colors that are perfect for year round use! Do you ever use dried foliage in with fresh bouquets? I think I would give it a try. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your creativity so much.
