The Power Macintosh G3 AIO was the most powerful and practical beige all-in-one Mac ever made. Its design language was cluttered, confused and tooth-like... a rare example of function over form. It was sold exclusively to the education market, so they are getting harder to find.
I came across this Molar from a long-closed school. It has been scraped around a moldy garage for many years, so hopefully we can save it!
Once we get it restored, I have a few modifications that I would love to try out too.

Finally, some love for the Molar Mac! My highschool was full of these machines back in the day, and I appreciated the sheer amount of STUFF they contained inside a single machine. Thanks for such a loving restoration, and the overclock + Rage128 mod is brilliant!

It's a seriously impressive machine! A genuinely "pro" computer in classic home computer form factor. If only their design department had stuck with Espresso for *one more generation* it would've been gorgeous too...

This makes me happy to see. I had a molar for a little bit (Garth had given it to me) but back then space was very much at a premium so I had to hand it off to someone who had the space and the know how to get it working. It was also angry, I think the PSU on it had died because all it'd do is make a hissing noise whenever I tried to turn it on. Seeing one of these spring to life like this is awesome. Even better yet that internal video mod, that looked surprisingly simple. That's really cool.

this is amazing!! interesting how the molar released not even half a year before the G3, obviously the Power Mac G3 AIO was exclusive to education, but if there were a reality where Apple decided to have the Power Mac and the iMac G3 competing together, lmao the two well known ways to stress test a GPU : video games (quake, half life, doom, unreal, the like) *y2k music videos* also, this entire video is really well made, but that 128 mod was NICE; unreal tournament running at 30 fps on a powerpc feels unreal, it all did turn out REALLY really well

Hi. I just so happened to come across your channel (thanks KZfaq recommendations) and so far I LOVE your content. If only my rotting Molar Mac G3 were this easy to revive... 😢 Sadly I lack the expertise to fully get into a computer, nor have the knowledge to recap, and I'm way too scared to get zapped by the exposed CRT.
@iiidiy
@iiidiy 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! That's too bad about your Molar... Recapping is fairly straight-forward to pickup, but it's very wise to steer clear if you're not familiar with CRTs, it can be dangerous. Hopefully one day you can get it repaired and up and running!

Well done. The G3 AIO has 3D acceleration with the ATI Rage Pro. Although with only 2Mb of VRam, it may have some compatibility issues. You should add another 2Mb VRam module to get you about 80% of Voodoo 1 performance. Even Unreal will play at sub 640 resolution with around 20-30fps. UT will be a bit much for the onboard Video.
@iiidiy
@iiidiy 2 ай бұрын
Yes, my note about "no acceleration" was about that early Mac Quake demo software, not the hardware, sorry! I didn't have any SGRAM cards in my other machines (the early iMacs use the same GFX chip)... and a used module would've cost me more than the Rage128 :)

How did you manage to fix the cosmetic issues while retaining the plastic texture? I saw you use sandpaper and scrub pads, but typically that would ruin the texture. I’m intrigued, as if you have a technique, others may benefit from it!
@iiidiy
@iiidiy 2 ай бұрын
No magic technique, unfortunately :) I'm only sanding at the edges and the speaker grill where there's no texture. The scouring pad definitely IS abrasive, so it's important to only do the bare minimum necessary, and I feather it out lightly and widely, so that you don't notice the slight loss of material as much. It's not perfect, but I prefer this trade-off to a much more noticeable scuff mark. Also, I work under very good lighting - bright and broad, but directional... so that helps a lot.

I like the Rage 128. But is its Unreal Tournament then it needs to be driven by a 3Dfx card. I have always wanted to use a Voodoo 2 added in line from the from the onboard graphics to the internal display. When I had a working G3 AIO I used a Voodoo 2 to drive an external display just for testing and thats as far as I got.
@iiidiy
@iiidiy 2 ай бұрын
Interesting! I never had a Voodoo card. I was still on a 68k machine when they were a thing. My first PPC was a G4, and by that time it seemed to be all ATI & Nvidia. I'd love to get a 3Dfx card some day, maybe without taking out a second mortgage ;)

I don't believe they are... and if there is a problem, I have been told by a couple people that these boards are compatible with a standard ATX supply with very little modification. Second-hand info, so take with a grain of salt. Apparently the weakness on these Molars is the CRT flyback

Interesting that I never saw a Molar Mac, despite having had many different one's thanks to the back then USC surplus outlet. I never got into mac's due to their closed eco-system, but the one I WISH I had kept was a Lisa I picked up for $100 WITH the hard drive option. Oh well..... I think you have to be a bit of a Masochist to restore old Mac's. 😉
