I work at a paint store, I mix paint for a living. Preemptive I don’t know everything about paint. When mixing paint you have to pick a base mixture normally there’s three bases white,deep and neutral. Clear bases or neutral bases are for really dark colours like a dark blue or black, you have to do many coats to get good coverage. The more pigment you put in a base the more coverage you some times get BUT there is a limit to how much pigment you can put in before you force the base to almost separate or not adhere to what your painting. You’d also want to take into consideration the size of the color molecule, blue is much smaller than red... molecularly speaking. So you would need more red “drops” than you would blue or yellow. There is a lot of cool stuff dealing with color molecules. I’m a hairstylist and this is helpful when dealing with formulations and color longevity. My 11 year old and I LOVE watching you guys!

Highly recommend just buying duo-chrome paint (or spray paint, they're often labeled as color-shift paints) if you're going to be painting something and want that color shift effect. I understand that was completely not the point of this experiment, but y'all seemed so sad about the duo chrome and I wanted to assure you there is hope out there for color-shift paint job projects.

Hey Evan and Katelyn! Love your channel. Just a quick tip for you from my former life as a researcher. Your vortexer should have a setting for "press to switch on". When you push a sample into the holder and press down, the vortexer turns on and when you release, it switches off. Much easier than using the switch. :)

This video is once again reminding me of how I'd love to one day mix my own paints for art. By the way!! It is very standard practice to use pigment *powders* when hand-mixing paints because it doesn't effect the consistency of the liquid. Hence why the powder created the most opaque paint mix. If you want to mix your own paints at home, definitely do some research and make sure you've got the right tools! I highly recommend starting with arleebean's watercolor paint-making videos! They're very informative and easy to understand.

As a nail artist we layer the duochrome powders over black or a dark colors! You could probably thin it out more and get more use of it if you layer it thinly over a dark color.

Hey Evan and hey Katelyn! I‘m a Artist and I just wanted to give you a quick tip. Normally when you are mixing paint you should add the pigment first then the medium. You put as much pigment in the jar as you want to have paint later on.Otherwise the paint turns out pretty watery.For example your dual chrome paint would have worked if you’d added all your pigment and just kept adding tiny drops of medium until you are happy with the consistency. It’s like making Icing.If you add the lemon juice first you will have to add crazy amounts of icing sugar until you get the right consistency. I hope you could understand me well.I’m from Germany so my English is not that good. PS: You two are such creative persons and it’s just so much fun to watch your vids💕

Thank you for this! I was a bit disheartened by the gray-ish results shown for the multichrome + acrylic medium mix, and when I tried it that's exactly what it looked like, but then I took a chance and overloaded on pigments (gradually) to an extreme degree - like almost a 1:1 ratio (small amounts because this stuff is COSTLY). That made *all* the difference. Tried this with various multi and duo chromes from 2 different sellers, and that always seems to do the trick. So if you really need multichromes in acrylic form, don't give up on mixing them with acrylic gel medium... apparently it just requires a vastly different amount than resin and other mediums, probably because it's thicker (which is good for cover, so the pwoder still goes a long way - less layers). You can tell you're starting to get there when the mix starts to look as colorful as the powder, and that does eventually happen. Once it's pigment-loaded enough, upon painting (preferably on a dark background) it dries beautifully and holds well, since gel dries clear.

I spent the last year and 2 months doing this. It is absolutely amazing. I make some 300+ colored products in 12 different categories. I love this work.

If you use a base coat of some sort, like with a nail - and on a curve, you’d get the effect I think you were hoping for on the selected paint.
