Are Whippets suitable dogs for apartments? Yes they are! And in todays video we will discuss 4 reasons as to why Whippets are great dogs for apartment living.
When I adopted Freddie he was living in a house with access to a back garden. Although the move was most likely stressful for him, he had no problem adjusting to living in an apartment without garden access and limited indoor space.
I hope for those of you asking this question, the video was helpful for you. If it was and you's like to see more. Subscribe today and share the video with your friends :)

Me and my Whippet live in a small space and he's great. Doesn't bother him at all, he just chills all day. I found from my boy, and also from what I researched, Whippets don't back much in comparison to smaller breeds/terriers. My boy is really good; doesn't bark at noises outside or at the door, he notices them and then goes back to what he was doing. He only barks when he gets too excited, which I don't encourage. Works perfect for me as someone who hates dogs barking non-stop and am sure the neighbours can feel the same.

such great dogs, we are considering getting one. Would they be able to cope at home alone though if you work full time during the day?

I'm bringing home my whippet puppy on Wednesday. When she grows a bit and has had her shots, I intend to take her on the bird watching trails of the nature preserve nearby. It's about a half hour drive. What is the best way to teach her how to ride in the car? I have seen backseat dog harnesses tbat act as a sort of seatbelt, but there is also the sturdy plastic pet carrier option. What do you think?

Congrats 🥹 I believe in the UK by law now the dog has to have a harness and seatbelt. So long as you have something comfy for your whippet to lay on. He/she will be just fine! Any panicking or whining from the dog is simply ignore. If you ‘entertain’ this behaviour it could get worse. I do think though, that most whippets are fine in the car! 😃

What about the hair loss? I read somewhere whippets do not loss so much hair, but how much is it? My gf is so obsessed with the apartment tidiness and she doesn't like having dog's hair all around

If you live with someone who’s obsessed with tidiness, don’t get a pet of any sort. Hair on a whippet would be the least of your worries 🤣

@@freddiethewhippett thank you for responding. I do not have a dog, but I am considering the whippet due to the hot climate (Florida) and low energy lifestyle. I will however run the dog 1-2 miles every morning after maturity. My concern is that I am often away for up to 10 hours at a time, 3-5 days a week (I have a hybrid schedule that allows me to work from home 1-2 days per week). I will be with the dog all day Saturday and Sunday, or when working from home.

@@nm425 I’d advise against getting a dog at all costs. 10 hours a day would be cruel to the dog.

I live in a small 90 sq m appartment at 10th floor and consider adopting a whippet dog. A puppet whos balls has not dropped. I have a small soccer field with he could run in morning. Also a huge parking lot. Can he run on such? I have a 8 yo dwarf poodle friend who loves to run as full speed. I guess they could be mates, but the poodle can be quite a jerk sometimes. Any way... I guess he would not mind living indoorsy with me, so mayhaps I ought to get myself a whippet?

I wouldn’t suggest they run on a tarmac parking lot. But the felid would be great. If your current dog would get jealous you might consider holding off on a second dog for now. Whippets can be quite shy and delicate 😄

Are whippets prone to ‘escape’ through fences? My current dog I let off leash in a soccer field and she ended up squeezing to the outside ; only to be met with an individual who started screaming at me that I had her off leash. (I thought a field was ok, but I’m a first time dog owner and do this anymore). * There’s history involved and a little more to the story But the main question is: Do whippets tend to stick to just running around and then pretty good about coming back to you/ not getting outside the fence perimeter ? 🎉

I’m sorry to hear about someone screaming at you. People can be so unpleasant. If your dog approaches an on lead dog, I could understand a confrontation. But not screaming! 😅 As for whippets escaping… it depends on a few variables. - the relationship with your dog - the level of recall training you have - timing - distractions Etc If you have a good relationship with your dog and have built solid foundations with on lead walking and recall training. You can be sure your dog will come back if called. However….. if my dog Freddie is near a roadside and there’s a fence in the way. If he sees a squirrel, rabbit, fox. You best believe he will ignore me and chase. As a dog owner it’s important to keep your head on the swivel looking for potential dangers. If you think your dog is too close to the road, a dangerous fence etc. you can take control of that situation before things get out of hand. Example. If Freddie approaches an on lead dog, I call him back. If Freddie gets close to the road, I call him back. If I see a squirrel, rabbit, fox, deer and we’re walking near roads, I’ll call him back before he spots the animal. It’s a process of eliminating danger for yourself and the dog. I don’t believe you can single out any dog for being ‘known’ for sneaking off IF you have done the homework when it comes to training. Which starts in the house. Not in a field. If this helps, let me know. If not. Let me know if there’s anything I can do or any questions I can answer 🙏🙏🙏

@@freddiethewhippett ah. The fence was no where near a road thankfully. Also I did not see this person for a number of reasons. Telling to put leash on would have been fine. But screaming and then following me when I had my dog coming with me was over the top. I don’t let her off leash now at all sadly.
