I’m full of admiration for Anna‘s attitude: On the one hand, she recognizes that a particular type of school is not for them - seeing as they have a different cultural upbringing with European values - and on the other hand, she respects the way things are done in such schools in Ghana and does not see the need to criticize them.

It depends on what deem as best if comparing it to Ghanaian school. On the flip side if planning on bringing the child(ten) back abroad you you will want then to come back and settle in without struggling. I way teaching is done in Ghana is completely different. Learning is simplified with the children getting a better grasp not the subject. During the lockdown web I had an opportunities to sit and lesson to my kids lessons both primary and secondary I marvel at how teaching of otherwise abstract subject to me way back were explained and related to every day Life.

It's not easy giving kids the best of education, we are in Australia and chose private girls schools for our girls, year 1 to 3 is costing us $16,520 Australian dollars per annual, with a non refundable endowment fee of 25% of a year tuition to be paid only once. This definitely breaks the bank, but when you see the kids being able to reach their best because of the available resources and great teachers I think it is worth it if one can afford it. Free education is not always the best so is expensive ones. But if one can afford the high end education for their kids why not, it is not only the education but the environment and the small numbers of student in a class. Anna and Kevin you have made best decision, although hard, you will see the result in years to come... All the best to your beautiful children in their new school. xo

What Africa should be considering is authentic Montessori education as well as teacher training. Not fake Montessori, but the real thing. They can afford to bring international trainers to train the first wave of teachers who then can train teachers in the future as well. Following your Channel,am Nigerian based in Europe .Generally ,the african school System is different .The Ghanian System is much similar to the Nigerian settings .There are various types of schools for different incomes ,the Public schools are free in Nigeria,dont Know of Ghana.But ,the private Schools are really expensive based on facilities IT has.We are forced to learn in Africa,children are overburdened in school.imagine,even children are taught to read at age of 3.in some path of Europe ,children start to learn Alphabet at age of 5 ,whereas in Africa,some Kids already Know how to read fluently before 5 years.Its 2 different World,the schools in Europe are more friendly,Kids are free to decide what they want.Generally the Motive of some private schools in Africa is Money ,however some are good.for Kids who have schooled in Europe ,the african schools can be stressful and Boring and could be really hard to adapt.But Kids later adapt when you encourage them and also when the school and teachers Unserstand they come from a different culture and try to be nicer to them

our schools in West Africa are outstanding but need a lot of changes. leadership in schools is important in ensuring a suitable learning environment where each student can express themselves productively. A lot of our schools lack this environment. It doesn't prevent us from being successful in school, but it hinders our children from attaining their full potential. no one learns via a cane. It's sad that a lot of teachers think that.

@AkinAkin
@AkinAkin 3 жыл бұрын
@@ableman2108 have you seen a child die from beating? I went to a military school. Beating a child has no impact on that child except trauma. No one learns that way. That is abuse. It reflects poorly on the mentality of the person with the cane. It shows that there is very little respect for them. When I speak to a child, they listen. Because they respect me. There is a clear difference btw respect and fear. A lot of African teachers are feared not respected. Respect extends beyond the classroom, fear lasts the duration of a class period. And yes, I have seen an African child insult and put their hands on their mother. A military school will teach you a lot of things. I have seen the worst people you can ever come in contact with. There is no amount of beating you can give to someone to change them. I have seen several soldiers beat one student until they got tired. He ended up expelled. At command we were beating almost everyday, made no difference.

Hi there, children shouldn't be beaten. But a tap on the back of their hand is fine, and for them to cool off in a corner, or on a seating in the room, to think a little about what they have just done. To be taught from toddler upwards, otherwise when they get older, they will shout you down, curse, and worse beat you. Depends. My upbringing was in the sixties, need I say any more. 👵🏿

If I didn’t know any better and if everything in Ghana was seen through these people’s eye, you would think it was impossible to educate your child, find housing or do anything else in Ghana. What amuses me the most is the fact that they act like they’re the first mixed family in Ghana. I was in private primary school in Takoradi in the western region of Ghana in the mid seventies, and even then, I had 4 white 2 mixed and a few Lebanese children in my class alone and all had to abide by school rules including caning. I understand private education in Ghana is expensive, but there are different levels to that. These people’s main problem is that they want to have a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget and that sadly never works !

I think threats to children in school helps them shape up... bringing western idealogies on child assault and discipline won’t work perfectly in African schooling system. Most big rich Ghanaians u see in leadership position went to public schools and most special schools don’t Dutch out good quality children ready to face the future. I want to believe in African, rising a child takes a community not the parent alone. Community training can involve teachers discipline, home work and also hard work and ready to face the challenges of life. Ghana teachers are sound in teaching. I remember my elder brother having a Ghanaian teacher back in the 80s and he came out brilliant wining scholarships here and here. Believe me, if you want your kids to adopt to real African culture allow them to face the hurdles in the schooling system to be ready to face the odds of the future. Shalom.

Each has it's Pro's and Con's. I've experienced the European School system and it also has it's flaws. I wished that I experienced the School experience in Ghana The West also produces the most disrespectful children I've ever seen in my life, am not generalizing but some of these kids that I've seen deserved to be "Disciplined" (I've seen horrific things, to the extent of a 13 year hold boy hitting the teacher and spitting in his coffee) Sometimes you deal with racist teachers yep A black child says he wants to be an engineer or a Doctor and The White teacher will discourage you. I know that The school system in Africa is not perfect (A child only needs to be Disciplined if its necessary) there is always room for improvement These things happen to in The West It's up to you as the parent to instill that confidence in your child

What I have personally learnt is that, in Ghana, though the form of education might differ, the outcome in terms of knowledge acquisition is the same irrespective of which school you attended. However those who attended International schools are well connected so its easy to find them in big multi national corporations and occupy top positions. Those who attended SITO or government schools are not necessarily less knowledgeable. Some just find it harder to climb the social ladder. But these are the very ones who own small to medium scale businesses and form majority of the middle and working class of Ghana. The international schools in Ghana - for whatever they are worth - are way over priced. You did not mention the class size but anything above 15 for $8k a year is so unreasonable. I would rather take my child to a fairly reasonable school and invest in a personal tutor if the class size is above 25 as well as some fun extra curricular activity which is of interest to the child. I will personally not pay an arm and a leg for primary education because the family need to live as well as save for life's eventualities.

With such a budget I think if few families from the diaspora who are in Ghana wanted to hire teacher / teachers and create their "own school" for fewer children it would be less expensive than the current system and they would also be able to do more activities. I think in every problem you face there is an opportunity for a business. Currently there is a very high rate of unemployment amongst the education personal all over the world, this situation could be a very great opportunity.

@@AnnaAcheampong I don't think funds are really the problem, I'm talking about it because I've seen something similar in Europe. My brother in law and his wives wanted a particular type of education for their young children (Montessori) and they are christians but where they live there is no such schools but they created it with several other families. It's a cooperative model with different families, it's very original because they hired the teacher and the class was in a yurt with nature around it. My little nieces had an amazing time learning there and they did a lot of activities

So as a product of the Ghanaian system, I have not come across anyone who has been through that or Nigerian system of education that did not exel. Here in the free western elementary system of education it's different. Everything is handed to you on a silver platter. I will say that if your child even goes through the middle level of education in Ghana, that child coming back to the west will excel no matter what. One of my children went back to Ghana from the US, he couldn't cope because the system there is more rigorous and I have to say I prefer the Ghanaian way due to the discipline it instills. I'm old fashioned :).

@@kingtroygh2788 Nobody is in competition with asia or china. Asia is no future to africa. Africa is the future to africans. Stop comparing ghana to china or asia. . Ghanaian school systems shd be geared towards educating ghanaian youth for the benefit of ghana our beloved country not some western world where we r not even appreciated . Educate our children to stay , and build ghana not in the notion that the west is always better and half our youth end up in the west thinking that is the way to go. Why do some of us still have such a colonized mindset. This is 2021 . Stay woke .Stop comparing asian kids and what they r learning to ghanain kids. These r two differen worlds which is both gearing for the betterment of their country. Another great video Kevin and Anna, but one thing I’ve often wondered about in the Ghanaian school system is why they cut the girls hair? I would love to see you do a blog about this subject because I’m sure there’s a reason and I’m guessing it differs from school to school. I’ve even heard that they cut the girls hair in the international schools. Obviously that cannot be true as Sophie has beautiful hair and i’m sure you would not agree to cut that gorgeous hair off to let her go to school. I think Kevin said it right when he explained that a lot of Ghanaian schools the children are taught to blindly follow! But in the west it is a more holistic approach to schooling.

Local Ghanaians school are okay, as long as you don’t get whipped with sticks as a punishment, as they use to do before. I can tell you that , it doesn’t matter whatever which school the child will attend in Ghana, it all depends on the child how serious the child want to study. People who attend local school and people who attend international school they all sometimes end up in the same universities in Ghana. If you really really want your children to learn the Ghanaian culture then the local school is the best. Do not spend that kind of money if you can’t afford my dear.

I understand what you are saying but you comparing the state run system of the Netherlands with top International schools in Ghana. We live in the UK and our children have been privately educated at Primary & Secondary level. We did this because as black people we wanted them to have the best rounded education. In comparison with the prices of top International schools in Ghana, it’s more expensive in the UK. On average fees for private primary school per year in the UK is £12,000 ($17000) and Secondary £24,000 ($35000) a yr, and it rises up every year (this does not include other activities). So my point is, in comparison the private education in Ghana it’s reasonable.

First of all, you too are very bold and I admire how you're patiently and thoroughly explaining these experiences and being objective about it. For a Ghanaian who grew up and schooled in Ghana who's now married to a Dutch woman, the cost of GOOD EDUCATION in Ghana will break you. If I have Children, I think I'd rather give them the advantage of the Dutch school system. "GOOD EDUCATION" in Ghana is EXPENSIVE!
