You missed W-Magic on the red mage. Dual cast was always a staple for the class from FF5 forward (and they even found a crestive way to work it into FF14's red mage rotation)

A little surprised Red didn't get W-Magic over Vincent since that is THE defining feature of a Red Mage in most job based games post FFV

I feel like Alexander would've fit Barret more than Cloud being one of the most defensive summons in Final Fantasy, being essentially a moving castle with artillery pieces which I feel fits Barret to a T

The way you put these together is really creative and I like that the rules are so tied to the personalities of the characters

I did this challenge "based" on FF Record keeper jobs 😂 Cloud was a Mystic Knight (magic materias with added element and effect) Barret long range knight-paladin (cover, counter, low cure spells, barrier and hp+ materia basically) Tifa Monk-with some white magic (basically a full white mage with lots of passive materias) Aerith Sage (all magic materias!) Red XIII Red-Blue magic. Yuffie Ninja-Thief with status and poison magic. Cait sith Summoner-white mage Vincent full Black Magic Cid "Dragoon" (just some buffs like time magic and debuffs and physical passive materias) Ended using Cait Sith and Red a lot for obvious reasons lol

I'd say Vincent is more of a berserker due to how his Limit Break works

I love using Cait Sith as my Black Mage - for no other reason than i just like him :D

I'm spending my personal time doing a permadeath challenge where if a character dies in battle they are dead irl. Only exception is if they are forced into the party for any reason. And the game ends when Cloud dies making this kind of like an SMT game where if the protagonist dies its game over no matter what.

This is very similar to how ive always played this game since it's original release - except that i made Nanaki the blue mage and Cait Sidhe was a time mage/oracle (or as you call it - status mage) Even ib remake i made Barret the defender tanky class because he has ways to generate aggro and i can sit on him while ai controlled Cloud and Tifa beat things up.

If you go up against Emerald weapon (honestly not too hard if you turn Arie Tam storm to your advantage to set off lucky 7s), its drop trades for a gold chocobo giving quick access without breeding to KotR, and Ruby's drop trades for a set of master materia which would have KotR as part of the master summon

I build my ff7 characters with a similar philosophy actually, I think I'll enjoy this.

I've played ff7 so many times but I feel like I always use the most basic materia and ignore like 70% of these. It kinda makes me want to replay it and use your class system as a build guide! Fun video!

For 27 years or w/e I have loved Rufus' "What a crew." line

Last playthrough I did Cloud = counter-deathblow and haste/healing. Spellcaster with wide range of spells and some summons, and a physical with deathblow etc. It actually trivialized the game quite a bit, once you get some of the materia combinations a lot of normal grind disappears

You can beat FFVII by just whacking everything normally, blazing through the main story with basically no difficulty at all. So, I’m gonna say yes lol.

I'm at class part of vid. I do like the selection lot them fit really well. I can see Argument since enemy skill going to for Red-XIII since first enemy skill materia is right there when he Joins, but Caith sith with Manip on when joins it also fair argument. I can see Argument either one be Blue mage but being Mage fits both naturally. Also Dark Mage much better ascetic fitting Name then Time Mage who usely get Gravity and meteor magic and have Guns as Weapon for Vincent class. Yeah sadly For Dragoon since they usely are Jump key point of consistentcy between them there not lot options.

Barret as a defensive paladin is how I took mine on my currently playthrough as well. Slash-all is appropriate since he has a gun and can shoot back and forth is how I look at it. So many jobs/classes to choose from so it's good to see some diverse team building. RedXiii as a red mage and Vincent as a blue mage are something I've done as well. Once Aeris(th) is gone I'm out of a white mage and must focus on different ways to play as well. Cait Sith is one of my all arounders. Cid is my melee dragoon power house and yuffie is my ninja enfeeble thief. Cloud is my mystic knight with some enfeeblements as well as elemental. Lightning and Ice only since his name is cloud..

There's a segment in the underground after you jump off the train before doing the building climb where you can farm a repeatable battle against some Shinra troops (you'll know because the guy will say something about you being there, and then attack you) to unlock everyone's limit breaks up to level 3. 😊

I would probably be in favor of Red XIII having access to Elemental materia as in FF11, FFTA, FF14; Red Mages also have elemental attacks and defenses. Granted, they scale terribly and more like early game offense so you can get a few levels, but worth a mention. great job!

23:55 honestly, same. I think Tifa's theme is much more beautiful than any other piece of music in FFVII. Her theme feels like a warm hug but also sort of melancholic while also exuding this hopefulness. It falls into a similar category as Tidus's theme from FFX for me.

the New Threat mod for the Steam port of FF7 kinda takes this idea a bit different, whereas you can choose from 1 of 5 "sub-classes" each character has at certain points in the game by getting the various Source items since Source grinding has been removed, with Aerith having one of the funniest sub-classes of Slum Drunk

Luck only affects the character's critical hit rate, chance to avoid attacks, and chance to land a hit. So actually would have been better on tifa. But i know why you thought that. Luck in FF7 is a bit weird. Like for stealing only thing that matter is your characters level. Late game luck is almost pointless when you do 9999 without crits. Handy for dodging though i guess.

Thanks for this playthrough. This is my favorite game and I had a great time watching someone else who loves the game, playing it with their own flare. I hope to see more like this in the future.

I'm reminded by this concept that I really need to try Final Fantasy VII: New Threat again. It's a mod that, among various other things, adds a system where you can choose one of 6 classes for each character, up to 4 times as you go through the game, which heavily alter their stats. So if Cloud takes ranks in Mercenary, he'll have high Vit and Str, but if you choose Makonoid, he'll get Mag and Spr. It also gives each character a gimmick, such as Barret getting a small, stacking Str buff when hit if he's in the front row, or gaining a small percentage of his HP if he's in the back. Sadly, my save files corrupted half way through (An issue I had with the regular steam version, not just the mod) and I quit.

I wish you showed the whole scene where they swing on the rope from the sector 7 pillar as it explodes. How barrets head phases through Clouds ass... Yeah, the hardware had limits, but WHO TF saw that animation and said "This doesnt need any more work"

Looking forward to this series big time! You should also check out the 'New Threat' mod for FF7 if you get a chance, it actually introduces classes for the characters and generally improves the game (imo)

9 was my first FF so when I went back and played 7 I designated each character to a specific class with materia loadouts because it felt better that way. Aerith was my white mage/summoner so it hit so much harder when that thing happens.

It's too bad that you can't get the HP/MP swap Materia earlier in the game. That would have been a great way to round out Vincent, effectively making him very, very powerful, but also risky to use in battle, meaning you'd have to adapt your strategies (like using Barret to cover him, for example). Sort of a mage version of a Dark Knight, sacrificing his HP for power, full on glass cannon style.

This kind of run actually looks fun. Might need to give it a go.

Nice choice with "Clod," I actually pronounced his name "Claude," for the entirety of my first playthrough. Not because I didn't know how to pronounce Cloud, but because even if I didn't yet have the future vocabulary to identify cheesy fanfic sounding names, I remember thinking at the tender of age of 11: "there's no way his name is actually Cloud Strife, that's so dumb." Cloud's reputation, at least in my little mind, never fully recovered from this initial impression. Having played 6 before 7, I couldn't recall any names being quite as on the nose as Cloud Strife in the previous title. Sorry for the rambling. Having played FF7 at launch, I'm obviously too old for this world, and have become senile.

All jokes aside, getting the barest date is hard as hell. I had to follow a guide so I could get the ps4 trophy for it for the platinum 😂

Personally would've made caitsith the time/ green mage and Vincent the blue mage 1. Because it's a funny reference to ffx-2 with the gun mage and 2. Makes sense to me since Vincent transforms into monsters and in many games it's implied that blue mages are bordering between man and monster constantly

I've always played it with a class system. The stat bonuses and penalties of materia actively encourage you to play that way.

At the beginning of the video I would like to make a prediction; not only CAN you beat Final Fantasy VII using a class system, but I think that is the way it was intended to be played, but with flexibility. Back in the day we all just gave everyone all the summon and magic materia but I don't think that's the way it was supposed to be used. I think I would have gone Red Mage with Aerith because both her magic offense and defense are really powerful. I understand putting Red XIII in that role instead though since he'll be with you for the whole game.

Leviathan IS the guardian deity of wutai, but that's not where you get it. I think there's a cave in wutai that is closed off unless you already HAVE leviathan, which you can find during the section where you steal the submarine. I think it's in a chest right after fighting the robot boss. It's missable - if you don't grab it then, I'm pretty sure you can never get it.

FFVIII desperately needs something like this. Imagine just 1 simple tweak. Make it so maximum spell stock was limited per spell depending on the character. For example, character A can stock 100 Ultima spells but character B can only stock 10. This simple change would instantly add classes to FFVIII and break the stupidity that is "everyone is every class". As an added bonus, add a 2nd spell stock limit pegged to your level. If you are level 50, you can't stock more than 50 of any spell no matter what your class is.

Feel like Tifa should have had the Slash All materia for the kick ability that monks had in 4 and 5.

You can do an New Threat 2.0 Combat only mod with Echo S7 Voice acting. Highly recommend. It hits harder when Yuffie has 255 Speed and hits every d.blow.
