Perhaps collecting coins whenever possible may also help! They increase your top speed and essentially your boost speed, which might help you reach some item sets sooner!

Bullet bills are good normally, but I wouldn't have any control while using them, so I could unintentionally end up in bad situations after using one. That's why I opted for the 100% control of gold mushrooms.

I was thinking the same thing! and also that the gas pedal/accelerator are used to reverse a vehicle.. the challenge is moreso "without pressing the A button"

I think its funny that the golden mushroom finally got its opportunity to be the best item, and it still can screw you over if it doesn't run out in time. Also I love hearing Creo's music in videos!

I feel like this challenge can be fairly optimized if u plan to tackle the rest of the game, such as using bullets since they are slightly rarer than goldens and bots won’t be pulling them that much. Secondly, DLC characters from MK8DX don’t have rivals so potentially it could make bots a little bit easier, as if not mistaken it’s just randomly assigned and the lightweight computers would have less speed making goldens slightly worse. Lastly, if u hop while driving you accelerate slightly faster than just holding down the A/B button, and it is especially noticeable when using a mushroom. It would be helpful to gain a little more distance when backing up at the start and would make goldening slightly more effective as u spend less time accelerating and more time at top speed. Overall great video and hope u plan to continue with the rest of the cups

Glad I can help, another thing that flew past my mind is the idea of using motion controls on top of regular driving. It’s a weird mechanic that allows a strat called “Motion Gliding” where you hold 2 directions via motion and joystick (and dpad as well) to turn at even sharper angles and gain more vertical momentum. It’s mostly useful for glider sections (it saves like a good second on Mario Kart Stadium per lap) and I’m pretty sure that it works when driving (although from some quick testing it only maybe helps when drifting but worth a shot).

A little tip! If you hold A + B and steer left/right, you can turn around 180° much faster! I mean, technically you’re pressing the A button, but in-game you aren’t moving forward. I hope you consider this, but I completely understand if this is a no go. Love this idea and great video, man! :D

Thanks! I knew about this and considered using it, but because it involves accelerating and braking simultaneously, I considered it against the rules and spirit of the challenge. Also if I did allow it, I would need frame-perfect inputs to make sure I never press the A button alone.

Saying you aren't moving forward is also a bit of a lie, because unlike every other Mario Kart with this trick, Mario Kart 8 has your kart slowly drive forward during a spin turn.

Two ways to make this easier: 1. Get a higher speed stat so that you go faster in golden mushrooms. 2. Use double inputs to get through sharp turns. A problem with this challenge is the Grand Prix, it doesn't necessarily give Hard COMs

MK8DX has brought so much joy to my gaming life and I love challenge runs of it. I even did my own where I had to get 1st place in each cup without drifting with the worst handling combo (Bowser+GLA+Monster Tires), Hard CPUs, and Normal Items. It was a fun time. Anyway, I would like to see you continue this challenge.

Driving backwards is still accelerating, just in the opposite direction... so no, you cant win without accelerating.

as others have suggested going for a cart combo with high speed will help a lot, since your top speed in a bullet bill is affected by your top speed. also coins are incredibly important and getting to ten ASAP is a must for a challenge which naturally puts you so far back (the difference in speed between 0 and ten coins is like 20-ish percent).

I know not accelerating at all is the challenge but i recently found out that the right control stick functions like the A and B button. would be a funny loophole if the objective was just to not press A

The DOOM "Tyson Challenge" is almost exactly this! ((You can only use your fists, chainsaw and the crummy little handgun. Handgun is only allowed because it's occasionally necessary to progress.))

There is one track you can finish without modification, mute city gives you a boost right at the start of the course and with 200cc and all the boost pads and items you can clear the course on a semi consistent basis.

If you enable crazy 8 and only 1 other item, then the entire crazy 8 will be that 1 item, so you couldve had 8x golden mushrooms

You should try using the brakes on sharp turns too. I know it works well in 200cc but I'm not sure if the mushroom boost cancels it or not.

You should do Yoshi's Island or Yoshi's Woolly World minimum jumps. I tried YWW min jumps myself and it was a blast. Recommended ruleset: Mellow mode banned (I used it in my run, but in retrospect it made some of the platforming way too trivial) Badges allowed (poochy strats baybee) (only if the badge is unlocked when you first reach the level) (not including the one that skips straight to the end of course) Multiplayer allowed (?) (I did my run solo, but I'm sure there are many cooler strats to be found) Fluttering allowed, holding the jump button for non-jump actions is allowed, fun is allowed. I also believe that the yoshi platformers are the only mario-adjacent platformers that no popular youtuber has done a jumpless run of yet, do with that information what you will.

not to say the same thing like everyone is but acceleration is any motion, including in reverse. It's just any movement over distance. I know it wouldn't work otherwise but I can't not say it
