What's the point in having a gravel bike yourself, if you don't have anyone to go gravel riding with?
Join me as I convert a 90s MTB to a modern, drop bar gravel bike for my friend Jimmy, with a budget of just £150... but can it be done?

I think the reason people tell you not to throw money to that bike is because it usually takes more money in the end that you realize and your better off putting it toward something more modern, not saying you cant take something older and give it new life but just be aware that it becomes more of a love project than that of getting value for your dollar

Yeh, I can absolutely understand that some bikes can become a bit of a money pit! If you take a detailed look at the bike and figure out what you need before starting to buy bits though, then you can usually work out if it’s going to cost you more money than it’s worth. 👌🏻

Absolutely. These old steel frames go on for years (so long as they aren't just left to rust entirely!). Although this one is a bit on the weighty side, it seems to be in good nick, so I have no doubt it has a good few years of riding left in it.

Always good to see an old bike that was given a new life! And given that the frame and donor bike came for free, it's absolutely worth it, even though the frame isn't anything special. Perfect commuter, unique build far from looking boring, and at an unbeatable price. Well done!

Awesome video ! I was curious do the microshift (or micronew) 3x7 shifters work with mountain bike derailleurs? Because I heard that brifters often lack the tension necessary to shift a front mtb derailleur (such as deore, exage, etc.). I have a 90’s mtb that I’d like to convert to drops but that has been puzzling me. Thanks !!

I can’t give you a definitive answer for all derailleurs, but all I can say is that I used 90s MTB derailleurs for this build and it shifts like a dream. I’m not sure how they’d stack up against more modern derailleurs though. I’ll try a video on that at some point. 👌🏻

Great looking bike again, especially considering it was never an expensive bike in the first place. I'm very sure it's gonna be a lot more fun that it probably was when it was new :). The only thing that could be (but I might be wrong) a downside are the brakes. IMHO the "clamping" brakes were never really that good compared to Cantilever or (Mini-)V-Brakes. I really like the color scheme, so thumbs up!

Curious - you don't seem to have an issue with cable pull for both brakes and front derailieur when switching to the microshift gear and brake levers? Do they have a long cable pull compared to Shimano Sora dropbar gear and brake levers which have a short cable pull? There wasn't enough pull with the bikes original Shimano C101 front derailieur combined with Shimano Sora gear shifter to move over all 3 front cogs, so bought a Shimano Claris. I have just assumed the v brakes won't work with the Shimano Sora and so am switching to calliper brakes - but perhaps I should have tried with the v brakes first? Maybe I should have double checked gear cable tightness before concluding the Shimano Sora didn't have enough cable pull for the Shimano C101 derailieur? Maybe I've spent unnecessry money and time?
@petertreadway
@petertreadway 11 ай бұрын
So I don’t have any issues at all with the derailleur pull ratios (aside from the standard problem of properly indexing a triple crankset, but I’ve had they on every bike I’ve ever bought from new too!). The rear derailleur shifts like a dream though. As for the brakes, this bike actually has long, side pull callipers (so like road bike brakes with a centre pivot but just with longer arms) as opposed to V brakes, usually found on MTBs. They side pull ones have a similar short pull ratio to road bike brakes too, so the transition to drop levers wasn’t an issue. If you’re changing from V brakes though, then you’d need to use something like a ‘travel agent’ to add extra pull to the cable ratio (you can get them from AliExpress for about £5. They’re called ‘big brake snail’ on there). Hope that helps. 👌🏻

@@petertreadway Yes, most helpful. Shame though not to have known things earlier as it would have been nice to have bought microshifters and possibly not had to purchase a new front derailieur or new calliper brakes. I will hold onto the bike's original derailieur and v brakes until I'm sure I have everything working ok. If can't get everything working nicely, can give some mircoshifters a go. I had never heard of the 'big brake snail' - great piece of equip and good to learn about. If I ever find myself putting drop handlebars on another bike - I'll be a bit more knowledgeable. Thanks!

@8:08 bike forum reactionaries are ridiculous sometimes. what you managed to build is incredible and you can always move the parts to a different bike down the road. I had a similar experience with building an old huffy stalker frame into a resto mod gravel bike (old huffys have clamped and spot welded drop outs but i liked the paint job and outlandishly heavy steel) . IF THE FRAME WAS FREE ANY WAY AND WONT SNAP LIKE ALUMINUM THERE IS NO LOSS WHEN IT BREAKS.

@petertreadway
@petertreadway 6 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks so much for the comment. So glad you enjoyed the video. You should definitely convert you classic GT though. That would be a great base to build a modern gravel bike. So the crankset I bought was just a cheap Bucklos branded one from eBay, which cost about £25. For the front derailleur, I just used the old Shimano one that was already on there and it works perfectly, despite being over 30 years old! So far as I'm aware, microShift works with most (if not all) Shimano FDs and RDs, as they use the same pull ratios. SO long as your GT has Shimano then, you should be good to go. For info though, the cheap, Chinese version of microShift (called microNew) work just the same, as I have them on the other bike I converted to a gravel. Might be a slightly cheaper option for you. Best of luck with the build. 👌
@sonofabics
@sonofabics 6 ай бұрын
@@petertreadway Thanks for the infos. I will go ahead with the GT, ordered the micronews and will see if it works with the FD. The Shimano shifters for FD mtb vs road dont always mix well, the FD has different pull for road than for mtb. Rear der. is the same pull at least. It seems that some mtb FD work well with road shifters, if not, some Road FDs like Claris can work well with MTB cranks so I just will pull through and see how it works. Keep up the good stuff. cheers

@@petertreadway I managed to convert my GT to drop down, it is a bliss to ride now. However the front shifter (Alivio mtb) wont shift all three rings. i can use 2 rings at a time. I built in an inline barrel adjuster and i am able to adjust it also while riding. That allows to either use the big and middle ring or the small and middle. It is not too bad but i need to look for a compatible FD as i dont want to change the complete drivetrain just yet. I saw another build with triple mtb cranks and road shifters where the claris 8 speed road triple FD would work with triple mtb cranks. i wonder what FD you have on this beast.
@petertreadway
@petertreadway 5 ай бұрын
@@sonofabics hey, so glad you got the bike converted and great to hear it’s mostly all good. Strange about the FD though, as there’s really no reason it shouldn’t shift for all three rings if indexed correctly. Silly question, but you definitely have a 3x shifter for the FD, yes? It doesn’t even sound like an issue with the BB axle being too long, if it will shift once you play around with the barrel adjuster. As for the FD I put on this bike, I actually don’t know what model it is. It’s a Shimano but there’s nothing printed on it, as it pre dates Shimano’s low end named groupsets (Claris, Tiagra, etc). It’s just a 20-ish year old one I got off the donor bike, so I can’t help you too much with that I’m afraid, other than to say that pretty much Shimano components should work with microNew and microShift.

Here in New Zealand, these kinds of bikes were what we laughed at, except they were branded Raleigh or some other "proper" brand, in order to compete with department stores... The 90's really was a dark period for some brands, we saw things like one piece "Ashtabula" cranksets and 2x drivetrains make a comeback with sidepull calipers on awful steel frames with steel hubs and steel rims that probably would have been sold for $400 NZD... I've seen it a few times in the last few decades, things almost being obsolete before the industry backpedals (no pun intended) and reintroduces some of those awful things so they can maintain a steady profit on their affordable range. 14mm hex bolts for cranks, freewheels, single-wall rims, 7 speed drivetrains... My attitude for a fun all-rounder these days is an 80's mountain bike with upright "cruiser" bars. Bar end shifters or brifters with drop bars always blows the budget way out. However, my current drop-bar gravel/adventure/touring/mountain bike was a measly $300nzd including the fresh powdercoat. Shimano RSX brifters 3x7, Deore DX crankset, DX cantilevers with salmon pads, double wall rims with parallax hubs, On One Midge bars, and an XT rear derailleur with some variety of Shimano road triple derailleur on the front. I used a tall quill stem similar in style to an "LD" stem to make the bike rideable on all surfaces, including mtb trails.
@petertreadway
@petertreadway 11 ай бұрын
I'm yet to buy or install any bar end shifters, although I do like the look of them and will fit them on a project bike soon. Brifters don't need to break the bank though. These microShift ones are pretty reasonably priced and if you want them even cheaper, then the AliExpress microNew ones are equally as good. Saving old bike frames, regardless of their condition, is a bit of a passion project for me. One man's trash is another man's treasure and all that jazz. If a bike can be put to good use, then it's definitely worth trying in my book. Your setup sounds pretty cool though. How do you find the Kool stop brake blocks? I was looking at putting them on this bike for Jimmy, but didn't know if they're worth the extra expense.
@Metal-Possum
@Metal-Possum 11 ай бұрын
@@petertreadway I think the Kool Stop salmons are mostly an image thing, it a visual identifier that I care about my bike, particularly the brakes, being set up well. That said, I'd also recommend plain black Jagwire pads, they're a fraction of the price and work well in fair weather. Salmon pads are all-weather pads, but don't hold up as well with higher temperatures such as steep descents. But all talk about brake pads aside, the brakes on this particular bike of yours are never going to perform well, it's just the nature of such a brake. They're long, made from thin flexible steel, and just can't provide enough grip onto the rims. Either find someone to braze some cantilever studs onto that frame for you, or find some long-reach (the BMX type of long reach, not a touring bike "long" reach) dual pivot calipers from the likes of Tektro or Dia Compe and hope for the best. Don't expect the factory pads in either of those brands to be particularly wonderful though.

@petertreadway Жыл бұрын
@@catweaseloz gotcha. So you probably know that flat bars tend to come up and back towards the rider, whereas drop bars go forward, which means the change in reach between the two on the same bike can be dramatic. However, I was lucky enough to get a frame slightly smaller than Jimmy rides, which meant he wouldn’t be reaching as far anyway and then I chose a short stem to keep the reach as low as possible. The stem also had a 7% incline in it to bring the bars up. The seat was then positioned for Jimmy’s comfort, so was purely trial and error with him sitting on it. TBH, it’s always going to be a bit hit and miss with these old bikes, as it’s unlikely you’ll ever get a perfect fit but if you’re not a pro or at least not racing a bike, then a few non-positions aren’t going to matter.

The build looks nice finished. Maybe they didn't position it in the right way when you said about people telling you it wasn't worth it. I'm all for saving bikes, but that bike is so heavy. I mean if your friend likes it, fair dos, but at that price I'd sooner just have a decent 90s MTB and ride as is. I'm a bit of a Kona fan myself, something like a hahanna or fire mountain will be better quality steel, lighter and come with more usable parts e.g. bsa bb, usable crankset potentially even an a headset if getting a 97/98 onwards model. They can be picked up for like 100 quid and if you're able to reuse the cassette, derailleur, crankset etc, might not be much more expensive than this, but a lot nicer frame and lighter. Either way, it looks nice, and hopefully rides nice, but that weight is pretty hefty and might impact the fun
@petertreadway

Yeh, your point about the weight is valid and this bike in the hands of a younger, more agile man might hamper the fun. However, as a couple of blokes in our 40s, Jimmy and I are never going to be flying off ramps with these bikes 😂 and will probably just shred a few gentle downhill trails on them. Ultimately though, this was an exercise in how cheaply it could be done, so for sure there are better frames out there to start with but it was a fun project anyway. 👌🏻 Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment though. 🌟

😂. Sorry to disappoint but they are fabric gloves with rubberised palms! Although I do think black latex gloves look cool AF! 😉

A man after my own heart for such a budget build, but $8.69 for a chain? be careful when cheaping out of things like chains because i got a shimano counterfeit and the thing didn't last more than a couple hundred miles and I'm sure was destroying my cassette and rings, and it failed shortly after. Awesome build though, well done.

Thanks so much and yes, you do need to be careful about some of the cheaper components. Jimmy's done a good few hundred miles on this one through some of the filthiest and muddiest conditions known to humanity and he isn't someone who's given to cleaning his bike every ride either 😂. So far so good though but I do remind him to keep an eye on it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Depends on your perspective, I guess. I threw mine around some trails back last year and it worked great. Also, I much prefer drop bars and shifters, so it just fits better for me. That's the beauty of cycling though, there's a bike for everyone. 👌
