|| ABOUT ||
Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

On the topic of plating, I worked in circuit board plating for 5 years. Your plating problems were likely for a few reasons. You need a test panel so that an oxidation layer can form on the anode. Also a filter bag for the anode will help prevent large particles from forming. Then be absolutely sure you've deep cleaned your cathode part using pumice and water to scrub the part, then a dip in an alkaline bath for a few minutes, then rinsed and into a diluted sulfuric acid bath. Use deionized water for the process. Also, the amount of charge you apply from the rectifier needs to be correct. I didn't plate with silver so I'm not sure how that might differ from plating gold or copper.
@FrugalGarden
@FrugalGarden 5 жыл бұрын
Silver nitrate will react with copper to make silver nitrate so sadly it is impossible to plate copper with silver.

It’s better than any play button KZfaq could give you because it’s something you worked hard on and it represents your channel and everything you’ve worked for. It’s not perfect, but that’s why it’s beautiful. KZfaq might be trying to shut all of it’s great creators down, but you have something more meaningful than some cheap factory made playbutton. I’m proud of you.

7:20 ish It looks to me like you did it properly, but the silver was oxidized, causing the black smudges on the metal. To fix this, you can line a bowl with tin foil, put some baking soda in there, and fill it with hot water (making sure the water does not go over the foil). Then place the silver in the bowl and make sure it touches the foil. The smudges will be removed. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the plating being oxidized, and also idk if you can even do this with silver plating

@star loves blue berry First off, it might be a bit grammar nazi-ish but I'm pretty sure you mean hate. Criticism is always a good thing, whether it has solutions or not. A point could be made that simple comments like: "Video too long" count, but eh. I don't think that's valid. But if somebody was like: "Hey HTME, can you show less of the casting since we've basically seen it before multiple times?" That's pretty valid, but it depends if he wants to act on that.

As far as I know, the silver is black for two reasons, 1. he used bronze so the plating process at any given point was irregular causing it to not make the clean atomic layer needed for it to be shiny, and 2, he didn't wait long enough, silver plating takes ages.

Lower currents and longer times will make your platings better. My parents where goldsmiths and I think I never saw their plating baths bubble as much. Additionally they heated the bath during plating in an electrical heater, which further helps you reduce the current. If I remember correctly, they never used electric plating, only galvanic plating without a power source connected to the electrodes. In the latter case the materials produce a current flow, so there is a current flow in either case. Try to stay below 3-4 volt. A galvanic plating bath may probably be more around 1V. But of course you have to be patient then....

I've had some experience with making molds from 3d printed parts. I've found that printing the part, then making a mold of silicone then making wax molds from that to put in the plaster works better, especially if you plan on making more than one. You don't have to print for every one you want to make, just reuse the silicone mold. Anyways great video yet again. This is probably the best KZfaq channel, keep up the good work!

Good work but here's a good advice. When you make lost molds mith lost models, you don't want to pour the molten metal from the top. In that case, the model burns away and creates gasses that bubble up and dirturb the cooling prozess of the metal. Instead you create an aditonal tunnel from the botom of the model, that loops arround the model but still have a opening at the top. Then you pour in the liquid metal through the tunnel. It burns away the model, whiches gases escape through the top and just wait untill you see some liquid coming out of the opening. It's very important here that you don't pour too fast, or the liquid encloses the model and the same problem you have as before. It looks like this; Z gases > Z | | liquid metal ___________ Z _______ V _________ |~| |~~~~~~| | | \ / When the cas cools off, you'll notice that the plug in the sprue will shrink. | | \ /
