In this video we take a 1989 Dodge Caravan and give it a much needed cosmetic overhaul. We are also trying a little paint experiment. Can you clear coat over primer? I am asking you can it be done? we don't know, and couldn't find the info anywhere on youtube. The van was not in awful shape considering its age. There were some spots that were rotted away that needed some welding and patch panels put in place. First we took everything off the van that we didn't want painted, then started fixing all the rust and sanded down the entire car. We used Omni Primer and Rouge clearcoat. The results were pretty god! We would do things a little different if we do this again and we still don't know long term durability. I can imagine if we spent more time on preparing a better vehicle, the results would look even better. But now we know it works...again we just don't know if it lasts haha. We hope you enjoyed the video and consider subscribing!
We have another project coming out next week so keep an eye out for that!

I have made jokes that the new cars look like primer with a clear coat and your experiment proved my joke to be not a joke. The van looks good and I am glad it was saved from the scrap heap, I don't know if I would have went with light gray primer with a 2k clear over it but it does look to be similar to all the grays that Europe and Japan are doing.

When premium manufacturers started offering those grey primer-like colors we used to make fun of those who bought them, like "you buy an expensive car but you can't afford proper paint?" But to be honest, if you have an old vehicle and you just want to get as much use out of it as possible while not looking like a hobo or hillbilly, that seems to be a legit solution.

I currently have a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron LX sedan 3.0L V6 and it is in INCREDIBLE shape. But the dang paint peels off. But the interior is so similar to the Voyageur / Caravan. Same room console with the sunglasses holder and digital compass. Same gauge cluster. Same column shifter. Same digital fuel economy gauge, etc. I Love it.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, it’s great to see you guys proving that this work can be done on a budget without the fancy shops, materials and equipment. Absolutely love the fact that Cam makes body panel parts from old cabinets and lockers. Anyone can buy panels and bolt them on but to build them from cabinets is an art. I would love to see tutorial on how cam makes these body panels.

You' re not alone !! ^^ Hehe. There are some people really loving these vans, I hope the community around them will keep growing. We have a francophone forum, for France , Belgium, and maybe Switzerland here. I saved 2 of them, a 95 with nearly no options ( my daily ) with a propane kit on it, and a very clean 93 A/C, cruise control, electric mirrors and front windows, tilt colunm, original roof rack with sliding bars, both are 2.5 L gasoline, they are less common than the 2.5 turbo diesel in Europe.

You could have bought a cheap white metallic flake to put in that clear coat. It would have looked like one of the paints the current gen Clio has. It's basicaly nardo gray from afar, but when you get close to it, it starts sparkling, because of the sparkles that are in the clear coat. Very subtle effect. Primer is so weirdly versatile. I wonder how much color pigment can put into it. 🤔

In short, this is my experience. Yes, you can clear over primer, but dont expect it to last more than 2-3 years before the UV rays from the sun to break the primer down to chalky crap and the clear to start lifting in sheets. Body shop used white primer as the white in graphics on a car of mine, and three years later the clear over the white was blowing off in fist sized flakes.

That turned out pretty sweet! I’m a fan of those old vans, too, I had plans to find a decent one and make a mini camper out of it. Out here in the Maritimes they have mostly rusted away but I did see a nice Plymouth version for sale last year. Someone else beat me to it, though. They also did a cargo van version that was neat, too. Cool idea with the clear coated primer. Did kind of the same thing many years ago on one of the original Minis - it was white and my buddy wanted the roof red. We had some spray cans of red oxide primer and some of clear coat so that’s what we did it with. Held up for the next two years he owned it, at least. I’d like to see how you guys deal with the backs of the new panel sections you weld in. I usually spray some primer then the asphalt type underseal for areas out of sight but I’d be interested in your idea of best way. 👍🏻

Thank you! Ya we are happy with how it turned out, and good to know you've tried it in the past and it held up for at least those two years. A camper conversion would be pretty sweet in one of these. There are a couple hanging around the shop, one of them is a woody! As for the body patches, we spray the backside with black oil non drip undercoat, but if you can get in there and spread seam sealer over the joint first that's great

Yoo guys sewnd sewww Kenadiun! Tell me, why do you say "Cries-ler"? It's pronounced "Cry-Slur"... Anyway, this project was weird. Even for me... Although, I guess this car IS iconic. Funny thing about nostalgia: it romanticizes things in a way that wasn't present at the time. I remember people being unhappy with these minivans. Wish I had the patience (or ABILITY!) to do body work. You guys are pretty talented AND knowledgeable. Nice job.

You could tint the primer, and even add metalic to the clear, either Or both!
@RustedRides
@RustedRides Ай бұрын
Ya! I'd like to try tinting for sure! The metallic would look good too, but can be pricy, although still probably cheaper overall doing it that way
@JimRockford-ju8ol

@RustedRides I've mixed a lot of paint..all you need for tinting is another color that's compatible with the component your using as a primer. So then, you add 10% color. And 10% in the clear again use compatible materials in each for the specific. So in urethane clear you can add a urethane paint. So if you bought a spray can of each and dumped them in you'd have a different color than gray primer. Now for the metalic. So I'm not talking metal flake..I'm saying something like a silver met in a clear binder or opaque binder, yes those tints can be expensive for a mixing rack but u only want a pint. Hit up a jobber that will sell u a pint for $15.. so what did you add, 30 bucks.. Btw, there is a website called paint for cars. The people are out of nj. I've used quite a bit of their materials..cheap and good hold out.. about 7 years outside 24 7. Inside parking probably last 20yo. However their metalic silver and gun metal gray I mix 50 50 crazy nice metal flake and a nice grey color.. something like 80$

Considering buying any winter beater that can be driven safely on the road runs around 10 grand these days, a quick 50 foot body and paint on an old minivan is not the waste of time Olympics. Could probably get another 10 years out of it without all the extra computer crap and parts are still cheap. To me I don’t see how base coat and primer could be all that different, they are both designed for adhesion, so the clear coat should stick. I’m curious as to how it will hold up to UV. We will need a follow up video in a couple of years. The van looks great, you will probably be getting asked "What year is it?" at the gas station.

Usually clear over primer is not recommended, however you can do an epoxy. I know that PPG makes a white epoxy and you can tint it. They don’t recommend it I believe, but I’ve done it, I believe somewhere between 5 and 10% and then if you let Epoxy dry, The P-sheet allows top coating without sanding, so why not just Clear coating 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
@RustedRides

Interesting. Epoxy eh? Well we will see how this lasts, but we should look into that stuff from PPG

@@RustedRides most epoxies can be sprayed as a primer or as a sealer with different mix ratios, the sealer ratio can be top coated, again, why not clear 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I used to work for PPG, we had a customer in Spokane area that had an older sedan delivery, he finished the bodywork and used the white epoxy to coat the whole vehicle, tinted it with purple and did a two tone. Let it sit for recommended time on the P-sheet and then cleared it, he drove the car to shows up there for years and years and the paint job never failed👍😁😁😁
