I have Barcelona Red Toyota, the base cost was $200 for a pint. I went to Autozone bought 4 Duplicolor rattle cans for the hood and roof for $25. Flipped the cans upside down ran the aerosol out, pierced the cans poured directly into my Sata and sprayed then cleared it, perfect match and looks beautiful . The key is get the paint out of the cans and into the sprayer cup. Had left over paint when I was done.

The reason people are using spray cans isnt because of the cost of the material, its because of the cost of good equipment. larger compressors, air filtration, (good) spray guns are expensive. then you have to know how to use them, and mix the paint and hardeners and thinners, which tips to use, how to dial the air and the fluid. When a paint shop charges thousands for a paint job, the material cost is almost immaterial to the process. People use spray cans because they dont have the equipment, they dont know how to mix anything or use the right tip or dial the air or fluid, you push the button and paint comes out. so that $90 vs $120 base color comparison makes spray paint not make sense for you. but you have thousands in equipment, and years of experience laying paint. Anyone can pick up $150 in spraycans from home depot, and if their prep work is good, they can get decent results. Add in about $250 for those 2k clearcoat cans and you can get a better than factory Toyota paint job for Maaco price. If you or a buddy has a DA polisher and know how to use it, you're can take that clear coat close to a good factory American/European car paint job.

A harbor freight paint gun is $25 bucks. A few minutes cruising forums and you now now how to dial the gun in and make paint come out of it. To still prefer paint cans is beyond retarded. Your paying how much per can nowadays? Just to lose half of it as overspray?

I am professional body man, and back in the day I was selling an Acura Integra with a new fender on it. The buyer wanted me to spray paint the black e-coat fender in spray paint just so it had some color on it. I picked up some Krylon semi gloss white, and it matched perfectly! I ended liking it so much I cleared over the spray paint and kept the car, it lasted 6 years before the clear coat started to peel. The clear coat peeling was because I didn't remove the belt molding, so my fault. The spray paint as base was legit!

I had an old 07 gmc duromax 4x4 with a half million miles on it, that I used to run my trap lines. Drove it thru the brush and had so many scratches on it, that would've taken forever to sand it out. Got the bright idea to black rino liner the whole truck. So I ordered a few kits thru Amazon. Came with it's own gun and everything. It ended up awesome! And that stuff was tough as nails. Almost impossible to mess it up.

I painted my ugly brown 79' Dodge beater pickup truck with 15 cans of $.98 Walmart gloss black one summer. I washed it, hit it with a scotch brite pad, washed it again and masked it off. I have to say it actually looked pretty decent! Much better than oxidized turd brown anyway. It held up for several years of Oregon weather before is started to get thin and the brown started coming through. These days it's parked and hardly used. It looks almost tiger striped from fade between the spray pattern.

Having done the Rusto, I forget how many cans I did end up going through on my small car, but I'll say it was around 8-10, and my Sentra was smaller than that Celica. That doesn't count primer cans, either. So I think you're right on that estimate, especially because I think your primer was probably very porous, whereas I think the Rusto "filler primer" was less porous. I think the advantage of doing it the spray can way, even if you can't justify it completely in dollars and cents is that with rattlecans it's much easier to go panel by panel during 1-3 hour kinda stints after work or whatever, and just do a fender or a door at a time, and eventually after a few weeks or months have the whole car done. I wouldn't do "two coats" but I would do about 3 passes, first pass really light, and second and third passes progressively heavier. Also what I did to eliminate the tiger stripes was since I was spraying outdoors, I would wait until just around dusk to spray, when it would be coolest. I would never spray mid day. I ended up getting rid of that Sentra sadly, but I do want to do it again, and hopefully do it panel by panel as I said and then one day with a gun get some of the nice Speedokote clear and do it up really nice. You are right math-wise, but having to do the whole car in one shot is pretty hard.

honestly at this point I'd say grab 1 turbo can and swap the nozzle to it it'll blast out way quicker and apply easier. that spray pattern is wild for a can also yes youre comparing supplies for the right way vs this.. yea it's not that different but thats ignoring not having the HVLP gun and compressor .. if you don't have that then you can get some pretty wild results for like 150 in your garage instead of spending over 1k to have someone else do it the right way

Also, you gave my hope that painting my cheaper projects doesnt have to be expensive. When I am spending $150-200 for half a pint of like honda pearl red or some crazy toyota color, easy to get discouraged thinking of a whole car job, but the cheap base and decent clear - maybe $250-400 total - would be just fine for say my 54 chevy truck I am throwing together.
