You can't officially perform an in-place upgrade from anything but Windows 10 on select systems to Windows 11... says noone but Microsoft.

[Notes] - Cube Computer Channel's video on the same matter from 2022 had a couple of points that I completely neglected, namely the fact you lose all your user-installed programs due to there being no option to carry them over. To bypass that, you would have to upgrade to Windows 10 first - which defeats the whole point of the experiment. - Windows 7's activation status doesn't carry over to 11, the reason 11 was activated on the machine I tested this on is because 10 was already HWID activated. - There is no practical reason to do this. Performing an in-place upgrade on your daily driver has never been recommended because it's always been known to break things. Also, a machine that is from the Windows 7 era probably shouldn't be running 11 anyway, but it's your computer, your choice of what OS to install. - We know, Windows 11 bad. This video's title comes from the technical basis on upgrading from Windows 7 to 11, not which OS is better. I tried keeping my opinions out of the video until the end.

You can upgrade from 7 to 11 without any problems using Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC because that version of Win11 doesn't require TPM and Secure boot. Also, it's very clean Windows that needs only 2GB RAM and 16GB disk space, and supports old hardware like GPU with DX9 or DX10 or even none DX support, old CPUs, and legacy MBR partition for laptops or PCs that don't support UEFI :)

My version is only test to upgrade with windows 10, because more win 11 users try the 11, they said not like to use, just like Elone Musk he said, so my recommend is copy the win7 to new hard drives, keep the original no need to upgrade, only upgrade the copy one to 10 or 11 is good enough.

Interesting. I have done a few Windows 7 to Windows 11 Upgrades (consumer retail versions), but never directly. Always Windows 7 to Windows 10, then to Windows 11. Forget Windows 7 32bit. That's a non-starter. And Microsoft is quite right that you cannot do this upgrade. If you are using third party workarounds that is your lookout not Microsoft's. It should also invalidate any support warranty from Microsoft. You change it, you fix it. I have been seriously impressed with the way Windows 10 will 'adjust' to new hardware. For example, if I wanted to put a Windows 7 System Drive in different hardware, there is a very high chance of failing mainly due to Drivers. But take a Windows 7 System and in place upgrade it to Windows 10. Then swap the Drive into a different PC and I was amazed at how often that worked seamlessly. Windows 10 obviously did a little Device dance during Boot, and Drivers may need updating once loaded, but you get a working Desktop. Whether Windows 11 has this robustness I don't know. Never tried, but I would think it should assuming the hardware passed the requirements. No consumer in their right mind should use Windows 11 hacked onto unsupported hardware. I's different for Nerds as we can bizarrely have fun mucking around like that, but then we can clean up our own mess. Unless a consumer has a friendly Nerd on tap, but I would still not recommend it. Once hacked it will continue to need hacking at every Feature update, and who knows if Microsoft will not just prevent Updates on non-compliant Systems one day. They are certainly not going to support you if you have a problem. One issue that can (likely) be encountered is MBR to GPT. Windows 7 can be 'persuaded' to install and run on a GPT Partition, but it's a faff and pretty irrelevant now. Windows 7 will natively install on MBR. Windows 11 System Drive MUST be GPT. The conversion from MBR to GPT is not trivial. It's not a problem with Windows 10 as it is happy with MBR. My workaround was to Update Windows 7 MBR to Windows 10 in place. File System still MBR. Then clone the disk to another disk using Acronis which gives the option to convert to GPT. It says that the disk will not be bootable after but you will have a valid Windows 7 system installed on GPT. The next trick is to build the EFI Partition to make it bootable, which can be done from a Command Window (bootrec.exe) after using DISKPART.exe, with the cautionary that the position of Partitions on the Disk is critical so in some cases they may have to be repositioned. Not an easy ask with DISKPART.exe so I would probably use something like Parted Magic. Windows 7 isn't an ideal Partition setup for Windows 10 +. If UEFI/Secure Boot is on then it should Boot. I have done this. The MBR to GPT is most likely to be the show stopper if the process fails I would think. Anyway, I am retired now, but did Computers and IT for over 40 years. I have seen some changes I can tell you! Now I just play with it... 😉

the edge case for that would be to install Windows 7 on a Skylake-X system first, and then directly upgrade to Windows 11 - as to my knowledge, that is the only platform that officially supports both Windows 7 and 11. but since that stuff is still very expensive and not what most people have, I performed this on something more modest that most people would still be using.

And have my computer be even more vulnerable? At that point I'd rather daily drive Linux, and if Windows software is really needed, have Windows as a secondary OS.

vx790 its only as vulnerable as you make it, its not like windows xp without a firewall where viruses can just flood themselves in and automatically run. windows vista+ can last for years if you are just smart enough with your downloading, only issue is program support. if anything for that reason alone i'd rather use windows 10, but on an older computer like this id stick to 7 for performance, 11 is just going to bog it down

Not the point of the video, especially because you can't in-place upgrade from one operating system to another that use completely different kernels. But if you have concerns with Windows and security, then yes, any form of modern Linux would be much more secure than Windows - whether it's 7 not receiving mainline security updates since 2020, or 10 and 11 being known for their high levels of telemetry.
@PeBoVision
@PeBoVision Ай бұрын
@@VenomTNT64 The point of the video was the examination of upgrading within the Windows environment. My comments simply asks "Why would you do that ?". Securitiy is only one consideration, distros like Mint, Pop & Zorin offer Windows users viable alternatives to staying with the long-in-the-tooth status quo. By nearly every metric, for the home user, it is a superior choice over Windows. And in 2024, the learning curve is virtually non-existent (power users should learn Terminal commands, but power users WILL.) And it doesn't punish you for holding on to older hardware. I have the same version of Zorin (17.1) installed on current gen i7's and XP era Core2Duos, with no user-experience discernable difference in performance. I want folks considering an upgrade to consider ALL of the options available to them, not just Microsoft's offerings. So I always post similar comments on this type of video. Similar comments on similar videos are how I learned about Zorin. It kept 2 laptops out of Indian landfills, along with two desktops that were fully Windows 11 compatible from following a same-old same-old upgrade path. And this time it was actually an upgrade in performance and security that Microsoft simply does not offer.

I'm more curious if I can downgrade from 11 or 10 to 7 🤣 DISCLAIMER: Rant below! You've been warned. I hate windows 11 in the absolute sense. It's crap, task manager isn't instant like on windows 7 just to name one of the worst. It's highly unstable, I tried to copy some files unto a flash drive and for some stupid unknown reason the cursor drag and drop thing froze (not the mouse cursor) and the flash drive window stopped responding. I brought up task manager after a while finally and I tried ending the task BUT WINDOWS 11 IS SO STUPID THAT IT CALLS EVERY FOLDER WINDOWS EXPLORER and it wouldn't let me end the task even though it wasn't responding. With admin rights and all of that. And also, most of the settings that were available on windows 7 are either well hidden for most users or not at all available! The only PROs of windows 11 are that it's modern, can run modern softwares, it has ... some "support"... and there some other things like snip it tool that windows 7 doesn't have. But that's all!!! It's the absolute worst for compatibility and just work in general... oh, not to mention that trying to work with pdf, doc, and other files is another story. Microsoft keeps promoting you to pay for things you don't need. I really don't see any negative trait of windows 7 other than it's not supported anymore.

Use a linux disk to copy the windows folder from WIndows 10 /7 to 11's. It works, although some programs might break, and you wouldn't have the registry.

Listen here, you little squirt. You think you can just waltz into the internet and act all high and mighty? I've been lurking in the depths of cyberspace since the days of dial-up, navigating the forums and memes before you even knew what a keyboard was. My knowledge of obscure internet lore and dank memes is unparalleled. I was there when we first Rickrolled the unsuspecting masses, and I laughed in the face of cringe compilations. I've seen the rise and fall of viral trends, the birth of epic win and epic fail, and the relentless march of progress from Harambe to Area 51. My browser history is a graveyard of forgotten memes and viral sensations. So before you even think about challenging my internet prowess, just remember: I am the alpha and omega of web culture. I am the meme lord. Bow before your digital overlord, or prepare to be thoroughly and utterly schooled in the art of the meme. Do you think you understand the true nature of "dank"? You couldn't even begin to comprehend the sheer depth and complexity of a proper meme if it hit you in the face like a wet fish in a Monty Python sketch. My memes are so advanced, they have transcended time and space, creating a wormhole of hilarity that even Stephen Hawking couldn't explain. While you were out there living your basic, normie life, I was studying the blade-no, not that kind of blade. The blade of the ultimate meme. Do you think "Big Chungus" is funny? Kid, I've been through the entire evolution of the meme universe, from "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" to the "GigaChad" phase. My memes are so spicy that they'd make the Carolina Reaper blush. Oh, and don't get me started on my Photoshop skills. I can whip up a meme so fast, it'll make your head spin faster than Sonic on Red Bull. My layers are pristine, my fonts are always Comic Sans, and my impact text placement? Impeccable. I've created memes that have ended friendships and started revolutions. My memes are like the perfect cup of coffee-dark, robust, and with just the right amount of milk. So, unless you want to find yourself in a world of hurt, where every comment you make is met with the most cutting, blistering, soul-crushing meme comebacks imaginable, I suggest you back down. Go back to your Instagram filters and your TikTok dances. Leave the real internet work to the professionals. The meme gods. The keyboard warriors who have fought in the trenches of 4chan and Reddit. And if you ever feel brave enough to step into my domain again, remember this: I am inevitable. I am the meme. And you? You're just a normie trying to survive in a world that you can't even begin to understand. So go ahead, give me your best shot. But just know, I've already won. Because in the end, all your base are belong to us. Also no i am not doing this because you are a coincidentally a protogen, I just don't like people who use that exact same joke over and over again.
