Can You Jump Start a Car With a Cordless Drill Battery?

4 жыл бұрынMy alternator went out the other night coming home from a job. It had nearly drained my battery by the time I got home. I got a ride into town the next morning and bought a new alternator and installed it. But my pickup battery was dead. I couldn't find my battery charger and contemplated on how to get my pickup started with a dead battery. Then I remembered someone say they jumped their car battery with a 20v cordless drill battery. Since I had 18v Bosch cordless tools, I grabbed one of the batteries and gerry rigged it with pennies in the slots so I could attach jumper cables to it!
I was skeptical if it would work. I thought maybe it worked on compact cars, but never a dead battery in a Chevy V8! Did it work? Well, you'll have to watch the video and see if this 18v cordless drill battery jump-started a V8 Chevy pickup with a dead battery!
I will warn you, don't do this. Messing with batteries is dangerous and you could get hurt. I only posted this video to show you that it could be done. Kinda like Mythbusters redneck style!
I've heard you can do this with 12v cordless drill batteries as well. I'm not sure because I've never tried to jumpstart a dead battery with a cordless drill battery before.
Personally, I prefer those portable battery packs that will jumpstart your vehicle if your battery is dead. I had an old one from Black & Decker for years. Now I think Stanley makes a popular portable jump starter with air compressor. The Stanley jump starter would be great to keep in your vehicle just for such emergencies!
But as a last choice in an emergency, it's nice to know that sometimes you can use a cordless drill battery to jumpstart a car!

It works because the 18v battery has a higher voltage potential than the dead 12v car battery. The little battery begins to charge the big one as soon as they’re connected to each other, bringing them slowly closer to equilibrium with each other. Once the big battery has had even 10-20 seconds to absorb this surface charge, the starter can then draw enough combined amperage back out of both batteries at once to turn the motor over for a few seconds (only need a few seconds to start!) If the big battery were missing or disconnected, it would not work as the 18v battery can’t provide enough instant amperage all on its own. So basically the car’s battery is used like a large capacitor for a moment until the engine starts and it can get a “real” charge from the alternator.

I know you made this two years ago, but I kept searching videos to jump my battery and yours was the only video I seen how to hook the cables. Grabbed me two pennies and my hyper tough drill battery ran outside and did exactly what you did only I waited about 2 minutes before trying to start and I be damned if it didn't start. Thank you so much. Forever grateful for your expertise sir

Left the lights on my van today. All day. No lights on dashboard it was that flat. Used 18V drill batteries to charge the van battery. Only had some thin gauge wire on hand though so had to pulse charge it to prevent burning the wire up. About 20 minutes and I was up and running. Took 2 drill batteries to charge the van bettery though. And it flattened them completely. But it got me home!

Awsome survival hack. I'll try to remember that if ever need a jump or someone else needs a jump. I allways have my cordless tools wilth me going and comen home from work 👍

I'll try and use my Loftek portable battery jump starter if I or someone else needs a jump, but it's nice to know my 18v battery can jump start a car as well!

Yep, that's why I had a dead battery to begin with. My old alternator went out while coming home the previous night and the headlights ran the battery down. I got a lift into town to get a new alternator and once I installed it, the battery wouldn't turn the pickup over.

That's the way I was. Didn't have anything to jump my pickup off of, so I decided, what the heck, might as well try it!

@@BlueCollarDIY I got stranded off grid during a black out yesterday evening. Boost from a Tow truck isn’t even an option here. Thank God for my fully charged power tools in my truck. I rigged my Milwaukee drill battery with some 14/2 and a booster cable. Didn’t even have to wait, she kicked over on first try. Amazing 🤩 🙏

By the way.... Had a dead battery on my truck the other day. Had a 28 volt 2ah porter cable battery in the truck with some jumper cables (and two pinneys). Worked like a friggin charm brother!!! Just wait a minute or two and TURN DAT KEY!

Me neither. I thought it was just a hoax, but I'm glad to know I can use a cordless drill battery to jump my pickup if I ever need to in an emergency!

Good vídeo. Only 80 to 120 Ampers are nessesary to jumpstart a car with low battery in warm weather

Probably start LOW energy PETROL [GAS] Engines BUT i just tried an Bosch 18V fully charged on a UK VW Polo 1.6 TDI and NOPE just will not Turn over [Yes i checked everything] Ended up using a JUMPERBOX for UPWARD of 2.0 Diesel engines [BOOSTED right up].

Wanted to try this. My only issue is I can't identify positive and negative terminals on my 18v drill battery.

Is it a Bosch? If so, there should be a tiny + and - next to the terminals.

382k miles with an exhaust leak. But she keeps on keeping on! I just hope I never have to jump start a car with an 18v drill battery again!

Are u sure nobody is in the front of the car? With some cables or a jump starter maybe?😁 Cause u need amps to start, not voltage
