Jump Starting Your Car Using a Drill Battery - Does it Really Work ?

Jump starting a car using a cordless drill battery. WARNING ! I did this as an experiment just to see if it would actually work. This method could potentially cause damage to your cordless battery or even to your vehicles electrical system. Only use this method in an emergency and if you have no other options available to start your vehicle. I only had a 20 volt battery available but I wouldn't recommend using anything higher than a 16 volt battery when trying this. Here's a video showing a 12 volt drill battery jump starting a car: • Jump Starting a Car Us... Using a drill battery with a much higher voltage than your car or motorcycle battery is NOT recommended as this would have a greater risk of causing damage the car or bikes battery and/or even the electrical system due to the higher voltage of the drill battery. However, it could get your vehicle started and get you home or to a garage in an emergency situation. My car battery was almost completely flat and even my portable booster pack couldn’t get it started. I heard about this idea and I had to try it out for myself. I was a bit sceptical to begin with but, as you can see, it worked surprisingly well. If your battery won’t hold a charge then it needs to be replaced asap. WARNING !. If you do try this, make sure you wire the battery correctly or you could damage the battery or possibly cause it to explode. Thanks for watching. Please comment, like and subscribe !.

It’s November 2, 2021 at 7:27 PM and And I just did this with a Ridgid OCTANE 3.0 battery! There is a Tesla charging port about 30 feet away from me, I guess when they installed it they left some stray wires on the ground and that’s what I used. One wire was really thick, the other one was not so thick, but they seem to be aluminum or steel they’re not copper but it still worked. I connected it, and let it sit for maybe 15 to 25 seconds and then just started up my car removed it immediately.

Well I never would have believed it but I was sitting, stranded in a parking lot in Park City Utah with my German Shepherd Grizzwald, and my car battery dead.. I remembered a video I watched a long time ago about starting your car with a drill battery. And because I had charged my phone last night at the hotel with my battery pack my battery pack was dead. I just left Home Depot where I had purchased two Ryobi drills and a Ryobi circular saw. I also bought some five or six gauge wire to connect my inverter to my batter and some strippers. So yeah ... ironically, I had all the tools needed. So for reference sake, I started my car (2013 Honda CR-V) with some Home Depot lamp wire, and a Ryobi One Plus battery which is a 1.5ah, not even fully charged. It was blinking red in the charger. Hoorah

Side note: If your battery is truly dead and on its last legs Tip 1: Don't switch off the engine until you are safely at your end destination Tip 2: if you don't have quick release battery terminals and most cars don't, it's not essential to connect the jump wire underneath each terminal, connecting to the top or side will also work, but ideally you should use the most secure option you have available.

I had never heard of this at the time. We were camping no cell service and what do you know the battery died! I have several Dewalt batteries and was nervous that It may damage my drill battery so I decided to sacrifice my smallest one which was a 1.3 AH 20 V which if you don’t know is the slim battery. It is about 1” thick compared to your standard 2” thick. At thousand point my girlfriend was freaking out. I told her to calm down we will be ok. She thought we were going to die. The only problem was I didn’t have any wire on hand so I got creative we did have the 12 V DC car pump for the air mattress but the wire size was definitely nothing compared to aa actual jumper wire, I’d say it was probably 16 gauge maybe 18 even and the actual jumper cables I have are probably eight gauge. So needless to say I was worried my battery would explode. I stripped the wires with my teeth and prayed. Meanwhile I told the girlfriend to take a walk, I cannot deal with you going crazy right now. I figured it was going to work but I wasn’t sure and it was our only hope. I figured I might only get one chance at it. So I waited probably a good minute and turned it over . To my surprise it tried to start! At this point the girlfriend saw that and she began to breathe normally. I let it charge for a couple more minutes. The wire got pretty warm ngl but she started right up!!!! Girlfriend looked at me and said YOUR MY HERO!!! And I just smiled and knowing I was definitely going to get lucky tonight! Once again my tools save the day I don’t know what I love more my tools or my girlfriend. Anyway my truck takes a lot of power to turn over, 750 CCA but that little DeWalt battery reminded me of Thomas the train that day! They need to put a little hand crank on the side of all vehicle’s.

@Spidey5211
@Spidey5211 Жыл бұрын
The simple answer is not without a battery charger designed to run off 12v which will have a dc-dc step up from 12v to 20v, you cannot charge a battery designed to operate at 18+ volts with a battery that is 12volts. think of voltage like pressure. current can only flow from higher voltage to lower voltage. if you have 2 batteries one being 15v and the other 10v and you hook them together in parallel the higher one will charge the lower one until the voltage equalizes at 12.5 volts

... Very smart to put 20V over yout whole cars electrical system... You are actually lucky that you ECU did not fry or whatever, because your terminals were connected to 20V instead of 14-ish V (full 12v battery) Next time use a 12v ish battery, in modern cars it wouldnt really matter tho, they have over voltage protection, but with old cars this could be deadly
@ugenegareth9339
@ugenegareth9339 2 жыл бұрын
when you say turn the car off before disconnect the battery to remove the wire the problem with that is you won't be able to turn on the engine as the vehicle needs to be driven for a certain time to charge the battery completely so instead i would just put something like electrical tape around the exposing copper wires and some more tape to mount it so it doesn't swing around just until the alternator has had enough time to charge the battery ;;;;;;;'''''''''''''''''''' 2 Esdras 2: 31 -100 ;,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Tried it. Didn’t work. Somebody came by and got a jump. Still didn’t work. Ah the cheap battery in my work truck had finally and suddenly given up the ghost. $130 at Walmart got me back on the road. Was wondering why I was only getting 4 volts. Maybe that’s a sign, dunno.

Back in my truck mechanic days i had made a little 3d printed doodad that took a pair of Milwaukee batteries to jump start big rigs that has been sitting in the lot too long. Saved my the trouble of dragging the heavy battery cart all the way out there. The real kicker is the batteries were wired in parallel of course, and most of the time one would get the job done just fine.

Its can work because the tool battery flow the current to the car battery for some minutes, the car battery stored the whole current that was flowing, and when you start your car its will be alright

it's ultra sketchy but i think it probably won't in most cases, since the batteries of the cars this is done to is very low and therefore takes a lot of current, so the voltage of the drill battery will probably drop a lot, and the voltage across the ecu should be fine
@Spidey5211
@Spidey5211 Жыл бұрын
the voltage of you car battery 12.6 normally (who knows what voltage if its dead) and the drill battery (20v) fully charged will average out to around 15-16volts and most cars will have over voltage protection, id be more worried about ruining the tool battery especially if its a cheaper brand one, name brand good ones will have overcurrent protection. but like mentioned elsewhere this is a emergency method.

@DominoSixO

A bit alarming, 20v battery to a 12v battery and system, this might damage the internal electronics, not all cars can handle more than 12v. Better use 12v battery packs and never more than 12v this can cause permanent damage to your electronics
