A number of you asked me to make a knife out of epoxy. If I'm honest here, I had very little hope of it being successful.

you need to WET THE STONE when you sharpen it! otherwise you're just gonna melt it

+floris kleijwegt A wet stone probably wont work if you use water because then the stone isn't going to sharpen anymore because there is no friction. Just in case other people couldn't read this.

+Kreatoss Any lapidary can tell you that a wet stone cuts better than a dry one. The water keeps the stone cooler, so you can cut heat sensitive materials and also carries away the sludge that can clog a dry stone.

You can get diamond paste really cheap on Ebay. It will give you a clear finish with no heat and probably sharp enough to shave with. Just put a little bit on some wood and use it as a strop. It is the best thing I have ever used for chisels too.

Haha that was great Peter. I bet you could cast something really cool. What if you cast a piece of metal into it, so the knife was clear and the edge was metal? That would be interesting.

+scrubby4130 I wonder if that would be enough to get an edge on? I have both aluminum shavings and brass shavings in the shop. Neither are very good knife making metals!

i think u need a deeper grind, that is at least 5 or 6 mms thick i assume and the edge angle you made is like an edge for an axe..

Yeah, I kinda want to see what would happen if he molded an actual sharp knife and poured epoxy. Would the edge be preserved? Or would it end up warped and lose it's sharpness?

This is really cool.. i have been wondering if you can laminate a thin core properly heat treated with epoxy to make something kinda Damascus like or if you embedded heat treated tiny pieces or dust into epoxy.. would love to know
