We need to bring back the encouragement and dignity of trade work. It is incredibly important and in demand work that you can make a good living at and a great option for many young people.

I graduated in 2006, I remember also a push about how you "need to go to college" I never did, I've been a machinist for 15 years and started woodworking on the side a few years ago and it grows every year

I adore your channel!! Thank you x1,000,000,000 for your content I’d love to hear about the “alternate living” My question for you: would you do it again? I love the idea of becoming you one day, but that’s a looooot of overhead. So would you do it all again , or would you do something different?

Thanks so much ! Glad to hear it . I start wondering if I’m just rambling or if it’s useful. Yes I’ll definitely share more . It is a lot of overhead and I wouldn’t want anyone to be me , just be yourself and copy some things you find useful haha … I would do it again but actually don’t prefer to have a lot of overhead and am going to be downsizing a little and moving to a different state in the next year to have my own land with a shop in it (in Idaho) So some things will be changing and should make for even more interesting content !

Just found your channel and love your view as a real cabinet maker and not a "quick and easy base cabinet" one off youtuber. This video was great and two moments speak volumes. The subtle sub second flash of your SL 550 outside says you're not just "getting by" without talking numbers, and then some days you spend 15 hours at a time in the shop, tells me you're a hard/dedicated worker. Great content!! I am binge watching your videos now.

Appreciate you! Yes I hope to share more over time and get better at creating “content” which I’m still not very good at . I’m in the business of manufacturing cabinets first , content creator second. Hoping I can share insights as someone who owns a cabinet business and makes a living doing it . Also I want to show that building some of this stuff is more simple and less intimidating than many may think.

Brilliant work. Bouncing from one job to the next. Love what you do in your shop. My shop is exactly like yours. We love what we do and we make. Just need to get it out the door. We are makers. Live the dream. Keep up the outstanding projects. Need to get Mulder on the tools.

Richard, awesome stuff!! What advice would you give someone that was interested in starting a cabinet shop?
@cabinetwise
@cabinetwise Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Hmm I’d say first know your area/ clients . Figure out who you are serving and how you can make their life / experience better . For it to be a business you need to focus on meeting peoples needs. Once you find a niche focus on improving skills needed to be better and more efficient. Accumulating equipment is at the end of the priority list . Only get what you absolutely need when starting out.

I like your workflow process. Do you outsource the finishing process? Currently I do the finishing myself. It takes time and space so I've been trying to find a good local finishing company.
@cabinetwise
@cabinetwise Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes outsource all finishing to one designated painter who sprayed all our cabinets. It allows us to focus on building and shipping out . Sorry for the delayed reply work has been busy but I’m back on KZfaq and a new vid is out tomorrow .

Great video. Do you quote your jobs by the job or by the foot? Do you use Excel to build a materials list per foot?
@cabinetwise
@cabinetwise Жыл бұрын
I don’t price by the foot . I price each job as a batch where i tally up all the materials and labor broken done by each cabinet/ room . Takes some time but allows for very precise and competitive bidding

How long does it take on avg to build a kitchen with 11face framed cabinets , painted, 8 drawers, 3 pull outs, ?
@cabinetwise

About a week ? It varies … also i rarely work on one job at a time . It’s more efficient to do multiple at once .

We don’t install. Our business model is to design, build , ship out . We do coordinate with installers to make the process easier for the client .

What I tell people, Is what I was told when I was in college by one of my professors, he said that if you think you're going to get rich being a woodworker you should change majors. I am trained to do furniture, but people won't pay what its worth to do custom furniture. I have been doing mostly cabinets, for the last 20 years. I have a lot bigger investment in machinery than you do, which allows to me work on my own faster. I see a lot of people telling others that they can make money doing woodworking, and I would have to say that it's not true, it takes years to develop the skills to get to a point where you can do quality work and do it efficient enough to make a living.
