What I love about your channel is it teaches us things I never knew I wanted to learn

This is the "trick" I had to use when binding the two halves (front and back) of my chainmail together. The pattern I used could work flawlessly for creating a cylinder but there's no logical way to bind the rings together at the top to form the shoulder 'seam'. Went through a lot of variations before I cracked open a website on borromean rings to see what I could do with that concept and came up with one that blends so well with the pattern that you really can't tell they're different until you look very closely at which rings are on top of what other rings.

Couldn't you also construct a 3D shape that looked like that from the top down if the rings were simply curved instead of flat?

If the term "un-knot" is a word then I'm going to do some "un-work" on the job today: It's work that IS linked to the other work without actually being linked to it... That should sufficiently blow my boss's mind that I can get away with it for a while.

I think it would have been educational to try to duplicate that picture with three loops of colored rope.

Everywhere there's a ring, loop or a knot (or an unknot), there's a quantum mechanical analogue to it

I love the video, but you missed an example. You could have created the circular rings with a curvature in the 3rd dimension to allow them to pass through each other. When viewed from above, they would still appear as seen in the diagram.

Here’s an easy experiment that changing volume can change temperature. Take a wide rubber band and measure its temperature. Stretch and hold the rubber band and immediately measure its temperature. It should be warmer. Hold it against your lip. It will feel warmer. Hold the stretch until it comes back to room temperature. Then release the stretch and immediately measure the temperature. It will be cooler. If you hold it to your lip immediately after you release the stretch, it will feel cooler. Try the same experiment with a bottle of soda at room temperature. Shake the bottle vigorously and measure the temperature. Because volume is constant and pressure increases, the temperature should increase. Pres.*Volume =n*R*Temp : the ideal gas law. Let the bottle you shook up come back to ambient temperature. Then quickly let the gas out. It’s probably going to be messy. Then immediately measure the temperature. It should be cooler. Anyway, I love your videos and thought this would make a fun, low-cost experiment to demonstrate thermodynamics. Cheers.

Yeah, when you said about braids I thought we could use ropes (placing the green, then red, then like weave the blue into the red and green strings). Perhaps it'll also work with other materials, but at least one of them has to be bent. It would no longer be a perfect circle though in a strict sense, but we can create an illusion. I tried using binder rings.

you could also extrude them upwards from the paper I think. like one of those illusions where from the top, you see circles, but from the side, they're different heights or something.

The drawing makes us to assume that one is looking at the rings orthogonally (perpendicularly to the paper) and that the rings are on or close to the plane of the paper. But if you consider the rings in 3-space and tilt them all slightly, they APPEAR as perfect circles but in fact are still elliptical in 2-space. They are different in size. Try it at home by taking a screen print of those rings and tilting the paper away from you. You see the rings change from circles to ellipses. If each were drawn as an ellipse, though, tilting in the opposite direction would make them more circular. At least, it's something to play with.

Can you make this with larger/thinner rings to make it less elliptical so can be put on desk more like the image version? If these rings are made of soft things like rubber or rope, then we should be able to just detach them?

How did you make the physical rings? Did you 3D printed them linked or printed them separately and linked them afterwards?

You could make a real life version very simply by cutting out the image from the paper with a knife - and then gluing in a six extra little bits of paper to fill in the gaps where one ring goes under another.

From what I remember when I watched a single video about loop topology: if the amount of overlaps above is equal to the amount of overlaps below, it is not connected to anything. Since all three rings overlap twice above and twice below, they are not connected to anything

I use this same concept to close up cardboard boxes, which each flap overlapping over the next. I'm pretty sure you can make rings do it in real life too.

I think it is interesting that the ancient Norse and other people discovered Borromean Rings long ago. The Norse used three equilateral triangles which works in 3D without distorting the triangles. This is an advantage over circles which have to be oval. The Norse and Germans used this as a religious symbol.

I theorize that you could do it it wouldn't be entirely flat but you could do it. You would have to focus on the top two shapes first. Then the bottom one has to form inside the other two like joining rings on a chain.

What if you used something flexible that would return to a circle? Like o rings or plastic bracelets instead of making it elliptical

How about a wavy circle, 2 high points and 2 low points at 90° in the z direction (the paper is x and y axis). You could have a perfect circle in 2D but in 3D you'd see the wavy circle.

I would think with 3 colored pieces of licorice you could bend them around until you got that pattern and then join the ends. Or is the whole premise you MUST have rings to start off with?

How do you come up with all of these ideas?
