Senator Ted Cruz recently tweeted a segment that he likely did not realize was from our show. About two years ago, we went out on the street and asked people, if they could name a country on the map. Many of them could not. This had nothing to do with their political affiliation, but Ted Cruz posted it and wrote… “This is Bernie’s base - the same folks who tell pollsters that socialism is great because free stuff is cool & they have no idea how many countries have tried it and utterly failed. The antidote: facts, truth & substance.” Unfortunately, the guy talking about facts, truth and substance, made that all up. These were not Bernie supporters - we don’t know who they supported, we didn’t ask. Bernie wasn’t even running when we shot that. So, we decided to revisit this by asking people who do not support Bernie Sanders (in fact, quite the opposite) to name a country, and this is how that went.

I lived in Texas for a couple years. I remember ads on TV advertising themselves as the "national beer of Texas" - leaning into Texas state pride. And, for about 10 years, Texas was its own country.

I have to say it took me a moment to reorient my brain here. In the UK we generally show Europe and Asia on the right and the Americas on the left so the UK is more in the middle of the page. But if this is the usual layout for Americans then just wow!

I don’t find this surprising at all. I am an Aussie and I lived and worked in the USA for 2 years in the 1990s, on exchange with the US Navy … I loved it and my American counterparts were great hosts and lovely people too. I worked alongside dozens of Americans that were defence industry professionals and university graduates, but on the whole, their knowledge of international geography was disgracefully poor. I lived in Pennsylvania where the “world news coverage” referred to the west coast of the US … the nightly news contained zero international news at all, and to many Americans the rest of the world virtually doesn’t exist.

The problem is that that map was distorted with the Mercator projection. That is not really how the Earth looks. Unless you are a sailor or someone who deals with maps you have no need to look at a map.

Twain was kind of an idiot. He died in 1910. We didn't have a reputation for foreign wars back then, but the UK and France absolutely did.
