Um is it just me or does anyone else find it actually IMPOSSIBLE to read without saying the words in you head? I CANT DO IT WTF

Anytime I try to read fast, I get so caught up in the pressure (I'm naturally v competitive) and I start stumbling over words in my head or I'm thinking so much about how fast I'm going that I completely forget to process the words I'm reading. I guess I'll just stick to a more calming experience.

What about reading comprehension, though? Like, are you still understanding and absorbing what you're reading just as well as you do when reading at your regular pace? Curious about this. Very good video!

I find that when I read slower, say the words in my head, imagine the scenes, I remember the books and everythin gnome in them better, so I personally, have no motivation to speed read as it will take away from my recollection and vividness that I absolutely treasure in reading.

I read about as fast as you originally did for YA books (and any other genre but the one I'm about to come on to!) but I speed read classics! I have to read about one classic per week for university, so speed reading is so helpful. I sit up and follow along each of the words. Sometimes I also just read down one "margin" (imagine the page is split into three, and I'll read either the right or left hand side of the page) just to get the gist of the page. This is especially helpful for Proust, where he takes three pages to describe a frickin' spire! Speed reading is so good when you need to get information fast, though!

I love all the tips that you got on Skillshare. Reading while you're sitting down instead of lying down makes a lot of sense. I tend to want to read while I'm lying down and I always end up falling asleep quickly.

This is such a cool video. I've been known among friends as the "speed reader" of the group, finishing a lot of books in a few hours rather then taking days. Lately I've slowed down because I don't read a lot due to writing or otherwise, but I'm still pretty fast. xD I'm so glad that there's ways that people can learn to read faster, definitely going to recommend this to people. I learned in my reading class at my city college that you can fill in shorter words like and, or, but, it and etc that you would make sense in the space you skipped over. Speed reading at it's finest.

I LOVE this video, it's brilliant! And I actually knew about the "following the lines" method and I use it if I have to speed read while I'm studying last minute or revising for exams ahahah

Fantastic video. So, I went and tried some of it out. The running of the finger really helps. I usually have problem focussing on the text and now I've read a whole chapter without even thinking of anything else. I still need to vocalise the text in my head (reading not in my first language). But still a huge progress. I also get that speed readibg is not for everyone. I prefer rwading fiction on my own speed but it's great for non-fiction or studying. So thanks Ariel!

How interesting! I think my friends would say I'm already a fast reader, but I always feel like there are so many more books I want to read in a year. Maybe I will have to check this out!

About five years ago there was a speed reading course in my school one evening and I found it fascinating how many techniques there are. Now I'm at uni and the only thing I do is focusing on one line at a time and trying not to skip around the page. Thanks for this informative video Arielle I really enjoyed it :)

I loved the editing of this. It was so fun and intense haha. I kind of like hearing myself narrate the book, though. That's the most fun for me! Every once in a while I will speed read though, and I tend to do this a lot in classics when there's a lengthy description of something (like in Les Miserables lol).

This is so interesting in the most fun way - very effective at promoting this website! But anyway, I'd don't think I'd particularly enjoy speed reading but it would be great for school assignments and readings I need to complete quickly.

I'm such a slow reader, school and free-time, and I've always wanted to be faster but know it takes more practice for some than others so I just read the way I'm used to basically all the time :D maybe I'll try the gum to not to "speak" the words! the pen technique has helped with studying before!

For me, I am less concerned about getting through quantities books, but more moved to increasing the depth of quality in my reading. Most of what I read is philosophy, which doesn't lend itself to speed reading but rather to reflective reading. I also enjoy immensely reading poetry and published letters and diaries, and I sip them in and relish them like fine wine or spirits.

LOVE THIS. I have always thought speed reading tests are super interesting. It seems difficult to get an accurate number, because-at least for me-it's so easy to overthink it when you're timing yourself!! I took a test once and found I was a below average speed reader. I wasn't really shocked though. I focus on each word because I can't always turn my editor brain off, haha.

Skillshare is great, I love their lessons on Photography/Videography. Also super exciting to see that the lessons in speed learning works! To avoid saying the words out loud in your head while you read, I've also heard that you should repeat letters of the alphabet as you read.

This is a really interesting experiment, I need to try some of the techniques!

I'm a fairly fast reader, but I would still be interested in learning to speed read. I think this technique is interesting because it doesn't seem to rush you, just narrow your focus by eliminating unnecessary habits that slow down your reading, like jumping around the page and vocalization. So many people have the misconception that reading quickly means rushing. I have people say to me all the time things like "Oh, that took me longer to read because I was really taking my time and enjoying it," which annoys me- you can choose to read a book more quickly or slowly, but there will always be an element of base reading speed that depends more on, say, things you talked about in this video (focus, how your eyes are moving) than on how much you're savoring the story.

This is SUPER cool. I agree with you--not sure this is something I'd really implement when reading just for enjoyment. BUT--study skills??? THIS WOULD BE SO HELPFUL. When I was in college I would have to read AT LEAST one big tedious academic book each week, and these tips would be soooo helpful.

This was so interesting to me and you did such a great presentation. I know I read faster naturally than the norm because I watch a lot of foreign movies with subtitles. My friends will complain that they can't both read the subs and follow the visuals and/or they have to pause throughout the feature to 'catch up' but I never have this problem.....I sort of take in the entire visual and writing and am done before the next dialogue appears. What I cannot do is listen to audio books without having my mind drift and realizing I have missed 5-10 minutes of books and have to rewind. I have tried audio books in every conceivable condition: in the car, in bed before I go to sleep, sitting in the living room with full concentration.....the same thing happens no matter how hard I try to focus. At some point, my mind begins to wander without me realizing it until I become aware that I have missed a portion of the book. I am a bookworm and read, on average, about 120 books a year of all genres. My mind does not wander when I'm actually reading, so I think there is some kind of connection (for me) of visuals and concentration. I would love to be able to do audio books because it would be great to be able to absorb a book while I'm driving, doing housework, etc. but after repeated attempts, I still cannot manage it. Any advice, Ariel? Would love to know your thoughts on this subject.

Interesting. Someone else may have asked this, but do you feel that you absorbed the same amount of information and understanding while speed reading as you would have at your normal pace?

I used to be a bit of a speeed reader back in elementary school, esp. due to the competitive nature my school had for the Accelerated Reading program. I could still understand what I was reading most of the time, but taking as many AR tests before the the school library closes was just too fun to pass up as well. I've slowed down over time, but I kinda miss it. I'm definitely more of the "mentally read aloud" type, but I occasionally sped read aloud as a kid.

Hello! First of all, I really like your videos. I discovered your channel like a few days ago and I watched a bunch since then and I am really really in love with your videos, your discussions. I want to start a booktube channel soon, at least I hope so. And I kinda want to make videos like your discussions. I am not saying I am gonna take the topics that you've talked about and talk about them too. But having an account full of discussions about books(like not reviews, hauls, wrap ups BUT DISCUSSIONS) is something that I never saw. Every account has discussion videos but not like this. I cannot describe the difference but I just hope you'll get it.(Idk, maybe there is a bunch of booktube out there like yours, and these type of videos but I've never saw? I dont think so...) So is it ok for me to start a booktube channel, with discussion videos. I know this is not even stealing or something, I know there is a bunch of people who makes discussion videos and I know me asking this really weird but still, I want to. Because you are the one who inspired me. Anyway, what I am trying to say is above all else THANK YOU for inspring me. Second, THANK YOU for making this videos because they are SO SO enjoyable. (Little note: My mother tongue is not english. So I am sorry if there is any weird sentence. I talk english pretty good but I make a lot of miskates when I am excited. AND I AM EXCITED RN.)

This is so interesting! I actually already read super fast, and can't seem to force myself to read any slower, but I'm not always sure I absorb everything! So I'd be interested to try this course and see if I can learn to read at the same speed but absorb a bit more.

Very interesting. I tried following it when my finger and an item but I found it slower me down as I read fasting then my finger would go haha, Sitting up straight seemed to help though. PS like you hair at the end! X

I was so invested in seeing if this actually worked, I want to read faster! but then I also like reading slow because I feel I better connect with the story. :)

The pacer thing works. I have to read so many chemistry journal articles. They are hard. I totally use my cursor in Acrobat to keep my place. I think I've stopped sub-vocalizing sometimes, but not consistently. I've read large chucks where when I close the book and realize I didn't "hear" that. But I'm not 100% sure. Might be worth looking into eventually, because sub-vocalization is basically the speed barrier.

I never really like the suggestion from speed reading sites or videos that tell people to stop subvocalization. That's part of the thing that's fun for me with reading. I enjoy giving the characters voices and accents and things like that.

I tend to use a bookmark under the line I'm reading. It stops me skipping around but to be honest I've never done it to read faster! I didn't know that it would help with speed reading. I've just always done it to help me concentrate.

Since textbooks can be so dense and it's easy to lose my place, I think I'll try this there. It might be a great Booktube-a-thon technique, too!

I naturally speedread academic material but subvocalizing is literally the part of reading fiction that makes it enjoyable for me...I'm also not convinced that the same amount of information is internalized during speedreading, especially for something like a classic.
