I’d say various shotgun rounds like 00 or some variations of defensive rounds with both a slug and buckshot or multiple copper discs, and or rifles at various angles as your not always going to have straight on shots, and door penetration tests, or from the rear of the car as rear windshields have various angles, or through the trunk into rear/front seats/headrests……

I would love to see hollow points shot at a puffy jacket or thick jacket. I know someone who got shot with a puffy jacket on and the Hollow points pulled the fluffy fabric with it and stuffed the gun shot wounds. Saved his life

Also, it would be cool so see what happens when you shoot from inside the car. Track how much bullets deflect.

I would definitely use a string to pull the trigger, you don't want to be breathing in that glass dust, but I would love to see this test!

I would like to see how 7.62x39 and 300 Blackout compared to 5.56 to show weight retention (how much bullet makes it through) and deflection differences. Also if you could highlight the differences between the side windows and the windshield with a few more calibers that would be cool.

Ive not seen anything to compare to a 30-.06 under chin while seated in a BMW. Tulip effect on head, extremely messy. Had a .50 cal muzzleloader same way, not in car, seated in lazy boy recliner. These are comperable to .380 contact wound

You guys are doing awesome work! We used to do glass lab training with students when I was working at Panthera. The deflection shooting from inside the vehicle is MASSIVE. We would place cardboard targets literally at the front bumper and aim at the pelvis and see hits in the upper chest and neck. Glass is a very difficult substance to get any kind of reliable and repeatable data on. KZfaq hates videos like this, but they are very helpful to train with.

seeing as how hollow points are a lot more common in law enforcement and self defense. i'd like to see various calibers in hollow-points and maybe even "Critical Defense" in different calibers.

I have never shot my hollow points through windshields, but I can tell you through sheet metal and wood doors they do NOT expand at all, they punch through just like they are ball ammo. Hollow points only expand well in fluid/soft tissue. You shoot one into a gallon of water and it expands like a perfect mushroom. I use Federal HST's.

It is horrific and I'm sure similar to real life, but don't forget, that's not human bone so I don't know how accurate the whole face splitting off would be in real life from the 9mm. But I'm no scientist nor a doctor so what do I know? LOL

I'm layman too, but I still know that if a combination of soft and very soft metal hits something much harder than them with enormous speed, there is high chance of at least partial disintegration and deformation. This is not rocket surgery.

@@anteshell Thank you for your kind words. You identified it correctly and described it perfectly in the first paragraph. Regarding your second paragraph, I did some research on the internet about ballistics. Now I know there are FMJ, JHP etc. But also an Impulse Time. This means: How long does an object (in this case the bullet) actually interact with something that transfers its energy to it? There is no doubt that a windshield is hard. However, I found a video of a 9mm FMJ and a 40 S&W bullet being shot through 8-inch-thick pine boards, and both of bullets appeared to be intact afterward. (This has nothing to do with Ballistic High Speed, but if 12" is the FBI standard, I find 8" pine boards to be several times harder than any human bone.) If you would like, please enter into the search bar here: “9mm vs 40 s&w (Sellier & Bellot vs Aguila) by Jack the Shark”. It is the first thing you see above and you will see from minute 6:00 that both bullets are intact. - I didn't want to include a link here since it's Bryce and Adam's website - Lead and copper at enormous speedin wood or glass each in different thicknesses results in different effects. That's why you never stop learning :-)

The facial fracture where you had the entire front of the face break away from the skull is called a LaForte fracture. Usually seen in high speed (i.e. hockey stick to the face, knee to the face in football game, etc) events. Really cool to see it demonstrated.

I help with my police department’s vehicle CQB training. From outside to inside you don’t see much deflection, from inside to out you see much more deflection. I teach my officers if they have to engage from inside a vehicle you have to shoot 2-3 rounds in the same spot in order to hit your target. Great video guys!

Really appreciate seeing a tarp used to collect all of the glass shards for easy cleanup! You don't see many others think of that. Just one of the small things that make this channel awesome. Love seeing the high-speed and all the calculations in your videos of projectile speed and in the previous videos about ricochets. Really a lot of math and science that makes this so interesting.

The bullet deflects downwards after hitting the glass, because it's deflecting towards the normal of the armour (or glass in this case). This is a well-known phenomenon called shell normalisation in naval/tank artillery, and is an important contributing factor to the effectiveness of APFSDS against sloped armour.

If you want to have an intuitive understanding of why this happens, you can look up "APFSDS simulation". Pay close attention to what happens to the projectile immediately before penetration.

What next? Windshield shots at oblique angles (not from directly in front of seat)...to see if deflection is markedly greater when target is not perpendicular to the glass panel.

Bullets can ricochet off glass same as steel at critical bounce angles, only difference is the glass probably explodes as well. At 12º or less you probably will get some ricochets.

Years back I tested .38 Special waddcutters against a front windshield and the soft lead wadcutters simply put a small smear on the glass, and did not break the glass. Windshield was a 70’s era sedan. The firearm used was a Model 10-2 Smith & Wesson “snub nose” revolver.

It's insane. Especially rifle rounds. I live in the hood so I've seen a draco EAT a entire Lincoln MKZ up. Clean holes in the body of the car going up to the window. Split his head open and his last muscle memory was hitting the brake, so his car was just stopped while the mfkas kept going. Crazy sight...

Yes! I haven’t even watched it but this was always a topic I’ve wondered when watching police videos. You’ll see cops or suspects shooting through the windshield all the time, at great distances.

#1 amazing #2 I have never seen a more complete human analog replication of the full dynamics at play between different materials under such extreme loads. Did you note the facial bones being ejected back toward the incoming path of the round in the driver side test? I realize the different media composing the dummy aren’t perfect analogs for human flesh, skin, bones, and organs, but the cumulative and divergent effects on the different ejecta following impact is really remarkable, especially in those instances where observable damage at point of impact matches or exceeds that around the exit wound.

But if you really want to get ever more accurate data, then newer windshields could make a difference. I think laminated windshield glass went through an industry wide change in the early 2000's.

You'll probably get more deflection if shooting from the "inside" of windshield. At least over distance it will be more noticable. (That's my hypothesis anyway : )

I think some of this needs to be revisited but with hollow points. I can tell you that I do not carry ball FMJ, but Hollow points in all of my pistols. I would be curious to see how the two different rounds perform.

You should show how the curvature of the windshield can deflect a bullet when shot from the side. Same with shooting the hood of a vehicle. You can see the bullet bounce up. Also, the pillars of the vehicle actually offer a lot of cover and stop bullets.

Thumbs-up for the bullet deflection test. I have noticed that the bullet deflection from point of aim is relative to the distance from impact.

I have done a heap of testing on that. Not much deflection at all within 3ft. Front to the back is a little. 5.56 very different from 7.62. No protection even from doors. Engine block is the only protection. The laminate does have large effect but gripping onto the bullet. Great test guys.

a follow up vid??? HELL yes! Being a surgical technician and retired 91W combat medic, I am a bit twisted. what I found interesting wasn't so much the damage caused by the bullet, but what the "over pressure" did to the skull. that pressure popped his noggin like a peanut.

If/when you do another windshield episode have the high speed capture the bullet upon entry from the inside point of view. This way you can capture any deflection, key hole or bullet break up. Do buckshot, slugs, birdshot and 5.7. Great job guys.

Oh man! You guys were so close to making an extremely useful video. Then you went and used full metal jacket bullets. Dang it! One of the biggest problems with shooting through auto glass is that defensive rounds lose their jacket, get shredded, and lose a lot of their effectiveness. I use Federal HSTs for this exact reason, however bonded hollow points work the best for auto glass, like Speer Gold Dot.

Cool video. Been meaning to suggest something similar. Often wondered how the bullet would behave when shot thru the windshield from the inside. Perhaps you guys can draw the line of trajectory before/after hitting the windshield. This would be helpful for law enforcement and self defenders. Thanks! 👍👍👍

Dope video guys, I had a convo with a buddy over me staggering my magazines with fmj and every third round a hollow point. He stated he only runs fmj for penetration purposes, specifically when it come to vehicles. I wonder what hollow points would change in this experiment
