Cl3ver has been DYING to try tattooing leather, and he has finally got a chance. With so many different ways to tool and style leather, we wanted to take it a step further. We've seen people use a tattoo gun on leather before and were curious just how easy it could be...

I own a very similar tattoo gun I use to do my own tattoos. Important note with the needle skipping, the black grip part near the tip should twist/tighten. That actually sets the depth of your needle, so you don't have to stay as far away from the art to get it not to skip.

For adding detailed images to your leather, and make it feel even more authentic, I would try doing Pyrography! You'll need a wood burning tool, and I'd recommend the ones that have a silver metallic box as a stand, and has a wire connecting them. Burning a design into leather gives it a dark brown burnt look where you've used the tool, and it burns a slight groove into the leather. I can highly recommend it, having done detail work on a lot of leather armours this way.

(Sandi) In my woodburning kit there is an embossing/tranferring tool. It uses the heat of the stylus to be transferred through a disk-shaped attachment to transfer gtafite or ink to a surface via gentle heat. Works on wood, might work on leather.

I'd love to see you do some durability tests on these methods to figure out which ones could last on, say, a flexible piece of armour, or outside in the rain. It could be cool to get some of those inkbox tattoos you mentioned that use dye rather than sticking ink to the surface, as well as things like pyrography and henna.

Just yesterday another channel I subscribe to was showing off almost the same tattoo machine you used with some modified cartridges for tooling leather and down the rabbit hole I went. First, the tooling cartridges look cool and I have to get some. But I came across another video that did tattoo the leather and was talking about the splattering. His solution, which looks to work, was to coat the piece in PVA glue, let it dry, tattoo it, dry it again and then wash off the glue. The outcome looked absolutely wicked.

I've seen folks using temporary tattoos on tumblers, but never on leather. I'm loving this idea! I made a Wavy Thing on a Stick (flag) with my favorite knight's sigils on it for a ren fair - I printed out the sigils on regular paper, turned them into stencils, taped them down really well and used spray paint. Turned out sharp, and he loved seeing it in the crowd. He even signed it!

I wonder if putting a light layer of resist on the leather would minimise the splashmarks 🤔 The ink would still be going under the surface with the needle. I might try this with my stick&poke needles. And I could maybe try using a leather dye as ink, since they are way cheaper 😂

I love these ideas and now i really want to get a tattoo gun just to do this with! Other alternative methods I've used to traditional tooling: - Woodburning - Dremel - Laser-printer The laser printer was tricky because I had to figure out just the right setting to engrave the leather without burning through it, but once i figured that out, it produced a really cool look that basically looks like a finely-detailed branding.

A high quality wood burner with adjustable heat settings also works very well, low heat and some practice and you can save a lot of money not buying tattoo ink all the time. Plus you can dye over it without fear of messing up the design.
@vhaelen326

another part of actually tattooing leather... youre not limited to "safe" tattoo ink, the animal is dead and youre working with leather, you could use gasoline to tattoo for all you care, that gives you options colourwise that you wouldnt normally have like "black 3.0" for example or the brightest pink etc etc, as long as its liquid you should be able to use it in a tattoo gun (to tattoo leather)
@isayinyang93
@isayinyang93 Жыл бұрын
XD technically you could use fluorescent ink from a highlighter, or maybe even metallic acrylic paint?? Damn now I want to know if that is possible, imagine a fine and detailed metallic detail on your leather armor
@vhaelen326
@vhaelen326 Жыл бұрын
@@isayinyang93 as i said the main reason why you "cant" do that when tattooing people is because interesting inks/paints/liquids tend to be... 'not good' for the human body but the leather is dead allready so there are far less health concerns, if its a liquid you can probably stuff it into a tattoo gun, things like acrylic or oil paints might be a bit to thick but with the correct thinning medium it should be more then possible, you could MAYBE even tattoo ACTUAL metal into the leather in cases of metals that are liquid at room temperature, gallium for example, tho that would pose its own problems, most kinds of paint become solid by evaporating their liquid medium, alcohol based paints come to mind, where as something like gallium doesnt evaporate its moisture it just solidifies due to temperature, so gallium tattoo'd leather armor, great for winter larp, not so great for summer larp

When I was working with teens at the library, we did a henna tattoo event. To transfer the (ink-jet) patterns to the skin, we used a q-tip and a small bottle of essential oils (peppermint, not that it matters). Then you press the image where you want it on the oiled skin and hold it down for a few seconds. Best part, when you peel it off, you can use the henna directly on top of the ink and it stains the skin exactly the way it should!

A couple thoughts of how maybe to alter your processes that may work. For dyeing on top of the temporary tattoo to achieve that two tube look, maybe use Fiebing's Pro dye. It's oil based rather than alcohol. Also you could try Eco-Flo water stain. In regards to your Tattoo gun method, did you try coating the piece with a resist, resolene, or the like to avoid splatters being permanent? Just make sure to let it dry overnight before tattooing. Let me know if this works!

you could use a projector with the tattoo gun instead of a transfer and get most any picture you want. i also would wonder how alcohol dye (like the stuff you use to dye resin) might work.
