Drummers are all so hilarious! Every single one is the same in a few ways- like how when they finally set everything up and get behind the kit you can see that excited little kid come out of them 😋🤣

Nice video ! Your wife’s point of view is really interesting. I mean, she represents the 95%-97% of people that listen music with « just » enjoying it and don’t think it or overthink it as a musician or producer or whatever. For her, sample or not, it « sounds the same ». This test can be done to a larger public, I am pretty sure that the majority of non musician that listen to music don’t know what a snare is, can’t expect them know what a sample is and knowing the difference between a real of fake drum. If it sounds great with sample only and people enjoy it, job done. Great work !

"It's pretty much his job now" had me screaming 😂 I'd say most of them were pretty easy to spot because of 2 things: Timing and internal dynamics. There's an inherent timing difference between physically swinging a stick and pressing a key, and then there's all the personal experience as well. Dynamically, all your snares were hit a tad bit too hard in a way that most drummers won't do in those settings. Also dynamic phrasing on the hihat is usually a giveaway.

These are great! I'll grab them. I love the rubber bridge guitar and felt piano also. For Groove #2 what tuning do you have for your acoustic?

In the old Cakewalk Sonar you can (very tediously) set the metronome to the audio transients. So the drums can essentially be programmed to the guitar played without a metronome for a more realistic, natural feel. With that said, I will take my drummers performance over my programming any day!!! 🙂

This was actually really fun to play along with. Unfortunately for your fingers, it was incredibly clear who the real drummer was. The only one that sort of threw me off a little was the last one until I heard the second tom that was somehow far more dampened than the other. I didn't think a musician/producer would allow for such a massive discrepancy in sound, but overall these samples really do give the real thing a run for its money, especially if they're given more time in the mix on an actual project rather than a quick mix for this experiment (or at least that's what I imagine happened in this case). There's still a lot of dynamics and subtleties that were missing in this example, but I'd imagine a bedroom drummer on a decent electric kit could really benefit from these samples to get some pretty realistic end results. Cool video! Thanks, Jon!

Hey Jon / Joel, is there any way to get a copy of audio stems for the Drums from Groove#1 on this with the hi-hats -I'm a bass player and found your channel from previous other samples you did from Pianobook and am trying to re produce this in my DAW and then to Midi with the included hats triggering and then later will try to play this tune with the foot tapping HH pedal, but am not sure how Joel is doing that and playing the toms so simply and soft crashes. Its SO Great!!! Or is there a support email I could send request for this? Thanks in advance!

I think as you are able to play drums, you are able to include all the nuances on a “hammer action” keyboard. I sound like a school marching band, on their first ever day of practice. It’s strange, I keep perfect timing on keyboard or guitar, but don’t ask me to finger drum. Great and, as always, entertaining video. Thank you.

I forgot to comment on this when I saw the video a few days ago...from my recollection ABBA were the real drums, I guess it was easy to remember this acronym. I didn't watch the screen, just listened to each as he went through the songs, please correct me if I surmised incorrectly

Since the middle school boy audience is probably under-represented here, I have to say, Jon, you really gave him the finger on this one! (Am I still allowed to snicker as I hang my head in shame?)

Ok. 3A had me fooled/sounded better to me, even as a drummer with a masters in classical percussion. They are some scary good samples and some great fingering.

While both versions are close to one another, the real drummer had a better pocket than your finger drumming, I'm sure that with some practice you could fool the judges. Great video, Jon! Cheers!

You can never replace a great groove drummer with a program. The feel heart and soul is unmatched. Rave and edi music is metronome driven on the beat and drum machines are a must.
