This was so positive and helpful! So many of the videos and websites just bash on the whole idea of raising two puppies. For those of us who are taking on the challenge, we just want encouragement and tips so we can be successful! New for me was the “dog on dog play” explanation and the imagery that we are magical to our dogs with what we can do with them that goes beyond what they can do with each other. Thank you so much!

I have two 8 month old littermate lab puppies. They are both boys. I always tell people that they should never get two puppies at the same time unless someone is home for most of the day during the first 6 months of having the puppies, and i would recommend have the puppies separate for most of the day until they kind of get their own bearings. My boys would constantly "maul" each other at every hour of the day, and night. When one would not want to play, the other one would attack and vice versa. Also, separating them until they are a little more aware of how a routine works, prevents them from getting separation anxiety from each other if you have to take one somewhere. I got them when they were 8 weeks old and they were separated until they were about 5 months old. That means, they slept in separate crates in separate rooms, ate separately, i played with them separately, i walked they separately, trained them separately etc etc. This helps them become their own self and not be dependent on the other sibling for guidance. Now they are together all the time but I can take one to the vet if needed and the other one doesn't freak out alone aka littermate syndrome. i love my little boys to death but i'm telling you, two puppies is twice as hard. Plus, always make sure you have enough toys. I buy them new toys at least one a week/every other week. The only thing my pups have chewed is a wall (my older lab did the same thing I'm thinking it's a genetic thing hehe). Puppies need a lot of time and attention.

Your comment is so very helpful! I have two 9 week old Shorkie boys (brothers). They are doing GREAT at potty training. Also great at playing together outside of their crate. They still sleep cuddled next to each other. But, I have to feed them separately because one won't let the other eat if they're together. When one is outside the crate, he kisses the other inside the crate and has even tried to open the crate with his mouth to let his brother out. LOL But, 5 minutes after they're back together. They're all over each other like WWE. SO...I see that I have to get separate crates and keep them separate more frequently during this training stage. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I am considering a full brother to our 1 year old Germany Shepherd. You sound like you did it perfectly right. Can I ask how is it going 3 years later.? I had 3 Danes, 3 years ago that got along fine the first 5 years, then middle dog and youngest Dane started fighting. I kept my girls, but had to separate them to the end. I don’t want to live like that ever again. I have one Dane left. She’s 10. The 1 year intact GS. I understand the work, and we are retired. So were are here full time. Were your boys neutered?

Hi Rachel that is great to hear. Can i ask you how you managed to slowly begin seperating them? we have to beagle/doxy mix littermate puppies we adopted and they have spend almost all of their time together. Any time we seperate them they wine and bark the whole time until they are back together. did you have this same problem? thanks

Great video, Zak. I love how you remind people that bonding and a great dog doesn't happen over night. And yes, two dogs are twice the work (at least) We are magic to our dogs! Just like parents are magical to their child.

Oh! This video is so encouraging. I'm not sure i could do this without information nuggest videos like this. I find I am at the end of my rope daily with 5 month old littermates. All they want to do is play, play, play and one likes to dominate. When one is out of crate they howl and make the most absurd noises. I hope this passes. It's enough to drive a human nuts. Love these videos!

I have a six month old border collie and a almost seven month old yorkie cross. It wasn't intended the yorkie cross was a failed foster from bad situation after I just got my collie. It's been exhausting with toilet training, seperate crating and seperate training with my girls but I'm now starting to hit some advantages. They know their basic obedience and I'm finding now introducing them into each other's training sessions is a great way to add in controlled distractions. I'll have one dog working while the other is lying on their place or playing with a toy or even been scatter fed with treats. They both have a great bond with me but also each other and it's a joy sometimes to just take time of training and watch them play together. I've also had a lot less problems with seperation anxiety having two. Two pups is two times the work training and commitment but it does have positive sides but to get to the positive parts you need to be willing to put the work in.

My dog got pregnant while staying at my brothers house & I helped her deliver 5 puppies in my closet. My brother kept one, I kept one, & my mom was supposed to keep one. We found great homes for the other two. My mom ended up not being able to keep Sammie & I couldn't give him up since he was a very tiny runt who surely would have died if I didn't push off the other stronger pups off the mother and help support his weak neck so he could get some milk from the mom. I often layed with him & helped blow my warm breathe on his little body to keep him warm when the other pups shunned him. Now he is a big ole' monster & freakin' awesome dog. So now I have 2 sibling pups. A boy & girl German shepherds. Anyway I worked with them since 5 weeks old every single day since I have the luxury of working from home & decided to devote every moment I could to make them the best dogs in the world! Right.....well now they're 9 months old & don't get me wrong they are awesome dogs. They can come, sit, stay for 5 minutes at a time, heel pretty well, they sit & wait whenever I stop walking when in heel although I work with them everyday on it they still get stubborn & make use the deep voice to let them know I'm serious lol You know which one I mean haha. Anyway, even when off leash everyday at our local soccer field they listen 90% of the time, except sometimes when they see people they sprint over to them and jump on them extremely hyper & one time a family started screaming because they ran up to the little girl. They don't jump on kids because they are low enough for them to lick they're faces(they love kids, thank god) but its a small dogs world now & most people are scared of big dogs even though mine are very friendly just get a little too excited to meet people. I guess what I'm saying is I worked with sibling puppies 2-3 hours everyday worth of training, swimming, running at park, & a 45 minute structured walk at night. I train them seperately and together & make them do seperate commands at the same time based on their names. Like telling Sammie to come & Zara to stay at same time. And they still sometimes get lost in their own worlds with each other & they play fight and wrestle with each other constantly but never aggressive, I try & pay attention to make sure there is no jealousy or anything & I'm very careful to give them both equal treats, love, attention, etc. But holy shit is it a lot of work. I've worked 100's of hours with them & their only nine months old & there is still alot of work to be done to have amazing, well behaved loving dogs. Unless your retired, or a willing to devote at least 2 hours everyday to exercise, walk, & training them. I would definitely not recommend getting two sibling puppies at once. Although it makes me feel good to know they have each other. & even though I think we have a strong bond, not as strong as I would have expected. But they definitely love each other to death & I think they prefer each others company to mine. Thats why one of the best things you have do is use real meat while training. You'll quickly see the different in their attention in real meat vs manufactured treats.

dang man.... im debaiting weather to keep both of my litter mates, Bruno and Lucy. I'm putting in as much time as you are saying, but I cant tell they love each other's play time, perhaps more than my company. I can't wrestle with them like they do with each other and all the things a dog can do. They are 3.5 months. Got them when they were 2 months old. My dilema is, is the time I am putting into them going to be worth it in the end? Because if they see poorly then I rather give up one of them. thoughts?

I am so happy i found these videos, we adopted 2 rescue dogs and these are the problems we have been having too, i don't mind training them separately, and now i just let them wrestle and play fight with each other as much as they want until its time to settle down or train. they are getting so much better now, And Zak always makes you feel that anything is achievable. We had a puppy training class recently, and the trainer was just saying how we shouldn't have got 2 dogs and we have just made things hard work for ourselves, etc , not a positive comment at all! so watching these videos gives me new motivation to get it done! thank you x x

I got two English Bulldogs at the same time (a boy and a girl) they learned together and apart. When ever they got a treat we made both sit. If one didn't listen the other would look at it till it did. To learn lay down and shake we crated one so we could work with the other. When they turned a year we found out the girl was sick ( hip problems) and the breeder gave us another puppy, the two older ones helped train the puppy. You can train two dogs at once if you do it correctly I'm 17 and have had no problems with three.

They are still in the rough play stage but we're trying to get a hold of this in the house because they run around and tip over the furniture and cause damage. From this video it seems normal. Will they outgrow this and when? What is the best way to discourage this in the house?

Hi Zak, I was really surprised when I listened to this video because my name is Mary and we just adopted from a rescue two aussie mixs also. Except for the fact that they are two months and not six months old. I had the same question because it seems as if they only want to rough house with each other instead of train. Its driving me nuts and i am considering finding a home for one of them. I know they are still young but I am starting to separate them when this happens for a minute. It is winter and freezing outside so that is not an option but do you think we should crate them separately at night to cut down on the bonding of each other or is it okay to let them sleep together? I am not sure if they will grow out of this or rehome one before we get too attached to her. Both are girls and we have had them for a week. Of course they are puppies and this is normal for them but they take a lot of naps so it helps me in between wrestling sessions. We have puppy chew toys and have started on the basics like come but they are jealous when they see the other getting attention. Thank you for your help and I enjoy watching your videos and have learned a lot just in a few days. Keep up the good work. I guess I am nervous that getting two instead of one was a mistake. I am home all day but they are supposed to be my 5 childrens dogs. When they are at school i am the one training and dealing with the messes and fighting. I am just hoping it gets better because I dont want to be frustrated while teaching them. Thanks

Mary, I believe the advise would be to crate them separately at night, perhaps in two of the older children rooms. This way their comfort is coming from a human. (McCann Dogs have good KZfaq videos on first night crate training and how to settle them.) Then set yourself up in a routine, where you include all activities, and apportion a time to each. This way nothing is missed or forgotton about.

Absolutely spot on. I got my sibling Pups at the young age of 5 weeks. I started to notice at 8 weeks they were relying on each other too much. I am Day 3 into seperate time outs and sleeping, playing etc and i have seen an almost instant change n them both. Of course i give them time together to play fight but they are now much more wanting to be with us people. If i leave them unsupervised together for one minute they are pooping and weeing in the house, alone they go on training mats no accidents. I am guessing that is them fighting to be boss Dog so leaving their scent everywhere. I am still however considering rehousing one as i really believe two pups was a bad idea. If i'd had a choice no way would i have taken 2 but they were just landed on me and as they were sick i wanted to save them. I have saved them but together they my end up bad Dogs. I will wait another 2 weeks and carry on with this training and see. Fingers crossed.

I understand having two puppies is twice the work and how much more difficult it would be to train them separately. But don't you think it's still better to have two puppies to keep each other company than leaving one alone all day? (Yes, I realize leaving any puppies alone is not the best thing, but people do it all the time and they turn out fine it seems.) I've done my research online and 80-90% of experts say "NO! Don't get two puppies at once!" This is for a variety of reasons like they only bond with each other, they will likely die at the same time (double the grief for the owner), etc. However, I personally hate the way most dogs are SO clingy to their owners and I don't mind dogs that are little more independent-minded. Also, other dog owners have told me that raising two is not a big deal and they DO keep each other company. So are these experts exaggerating? Or is it a matter of pros and cons? Also, if I do get two puppies, I am advised to get one puppy then the next six months later. But that means that first puppy is alone for that six months a lot of the time. Is getting two puppies at once a DISASTER? Or is it doable?
@Haupialani

We got two sisters at age 8 weeks. (They're 17 weeks right now.) They are definitely a handful but we've learned to manage. It's very doable. BUT that's because my husband and I share the duties. In the daytime when we go to work we leave them together outside in a 9 x 4 kennel. They have lots of room to romp and poop. We also have a camera set up so I can watch them from my phone and my husband can watch them from his work computer. When we come home we put them in separate crates but the crates are in the same room. We always spend quality time with each of them separately every night so that learn so that they bond with us. And it works because my pup likes to play tug with a towel and finds her way to my lap so I know she looks to me as her safe haven and not to her sister. If I play with my pup and the other one (my husband's) starts to get jealous and starts whining or barking I'll take mine in another room so the other one can't see us play. Don't let the experts scare you. Just treat them independently and equally and you'll be fine.

I put them in the same pen, same routine, all is good! I dont mind if they need each others company. We are a close knit large family, no stress. Each to their own. They have time alone with family members and they have time together, they survive.....

I know your comment is 3 years old, but it sure gives me hope with my two! I had heard all about "littermate syndrome" and how it's more than twice as hard to raise 2 pups together, yet I went ahead and got two anyway because all of my past dogs seemed to really want interaction with other dogs, and it was so hard to find that opportunity for them. I'm already experiencing pretty high anxiety over whether they should be together or separate for much of the time each day. Training is certainly slower when they're together, but I haven't found it impossible. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for your comment!

dang man.... im debaiting weather to keep both of my litter mates, Bruno and Lucy. Because if they see poorly then I rather give up one of them. thoughts? what ever happened to your dog/ dogs

HELP! I need all the help in the world!!! Ok so i have recently adopted two puppies "one doberman and one half doberman half Rottweiler" they're siblings and both one month old "i know they meed their mom the owner was in a rush to sell them cuz he needed to travel cuz he had cancer" I bought them out of six puppies and it's my first time rising a dog (although I've raised a lot of cats before) and everything with these puppies is frustrating they poop and pee everywhere they never listen sometimes they're too emotional about their mom and start crying sometimes in the middle of the night they beg me to share the bed with me and I feel sorry for taking them from their mom early I never punish them and do whatever they want... so please dog owners out there! HELP

Realize they are babies. I would personally let them sleep together and spend plenty of time together until they are 10-12 weeks old and then start separating them. They need all the comfort they can get right now. Lots of cuddle time, hand feeding etc. I realize this post is a couple weeks old. Hope this is still helpful.

If he had to send everyone of us a frisbee... he would ruin himself! You can find frisbees anywhere and they are very inexpensive. Not hating, just saying ;)

I find it difficult to listen to you, since you cut the camera off after each sentence and turn it on again for the next sentence before cutting it off again. Messes up the visual continuity.
