Feeding time is difficult. They do not guard their food but will not eat separately, they go back and forth with each others food bowls.

We adopted two puppies (brother and sister) from the same litter and the request came from the rescue. We have had them since they were 8 weeks old (they are now 7 months old). I’d never heard of this issue before now. We do have them in separate crates but they along with our 18 month old dog all seem well adjusted. We will continue to monitor their behavior and thank you for the video.

GOOD to hear since we just adopted 8wk old bro/sis a mo. ago. And haven't heard of such a phenomenon. Though we're 3 decade long dog pair owners with a pristine track record of success & happiness, none have been related though on have been very close to same age 3mo to 1yr or so. Very interesting info. The video was very logical as well. Will, now, be very diligent re: our traditional training & raising. Final note, all our dogs have been 35lbs & smaller. These two should be ultra small at 8-10lbs fully grown. Thanks to all.

It's not too late to implement the suggestions in this video. It is especially dangerous to have them in the same crate. That would be our first recommendation. If you need help teaching each one to love their own crates, our crate training mini course can guide you. courses.howtotrainadreamdog.com/crate-training-course

We got 2 sisters before we'd ever heard of littermate syndrome. They started showing some aggression toward one another at about 6 mos, so we separated them when they were sleeping, so in separate crates. It took care of the aggression. They are almost 2 years old now and definitely love each other best, but are doing so well with us, separately. We do keep eyes on them when they aren't crated, especially since I'm WFH. They've done really well with training, too. Thanks for the heads up for the future.

Great video. We got the two shyest pups at the rescue. They said they were littermates but we doubt it. We think two litters were dropped off together. Any way these two were very co dependent at first even sleeping on each other constantly but they are each growing into their own. Harley will put himself to bed early while Sameen still plays with her toys or chews on her bone. Even when in the backyard they go off in different directions a lot. They both want to be where I am to the point it bothers my husband. They have even learned my car and know when I am home. Currently they share the same crate and playpen condo but I want to get another as Harley is going to be a lot bigger than Sameen and need more room. Thank you for the signs and symptoms will definitely keep a look out.

Thanks for watching! Please separate them into different crates as soon as possible. We've seen horrible fallout (after years of everything being OK) when dogs have to share small spaces.

2 dachshunds here. 7 months old. 2 days after I got them, I was stricken with sciatica and was housebound for 3 months. It's wasn't a good start. They are pretty bonded. They do have a pen that I can separate into 2. So, I guess I will do that. It's not going to be pretty. I have just been able to start taking them outside. (I live in an apartment complex) I will try to follow your advice. I am a single 74-year-old young lady.😅

It's a good decision to pass on the littermate. Maybe in a year if you love the behavior of your new puppy, you can consider another dog!

We have two litter mate Toy Schnoodle sisters 8 months old. They play very well together, we have two of everything. Sometimes they may want what the other has but they share and play nicely, are very well behaved and very loving pups to each other as well as all of us and everyone they meet. One has a very lady like personality and the other we refer to as a little party waiting to happen (she was the runt of the litter), they compliment each other very well and everyone loves them. They sleep with us too. I guess we broke all the rules however no issues here and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Prior to this we raised two very sweet miniature schnauzer pups 5 months apart and they were very loving to each other as well. When they got old and one lost her eye sight they other stayed by her side while outdoors- we didn’t rely on this of course but he loved his sister and wanted to help guide and keep her safe. We did worry how he would be when she passed and he adjusted quite well. They grew old together. We have also adopted from two very professional and reputable breeders. I would just hate to see folks being discouraged, perhaps what you are talking about could be more of a breed issue.

My mother & I have brothers, raising them in seperate homes. Mom is my sitter when I work, allowing him to play/exercise, potty, eat. ( My shifts are 10-12 hrs. ) Problem we are experiencing now is, when we're home he cries if I leave him alone. Cries, howls himself horse. From the moment I close the door behind me. I can't always take him. ( He is in the kennel while I'm away. )

It would be good to start addressing his confidence now. The longer this goes on the harder it will be to help him feel more comfortable when you are alone. Check out this video on how to get started: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM2DhMhjzbrWdWg.html

You can still implement these suggestions but you might need a professional to guide you, and you'll need to take it a a slower pace to undo some of the habits already established. Please look for a fear free certified or 100% positive reinforcement trainer if you need it.

@HowToTrainADreamDog oh ok. I was fearful it was too late. Thank you I will definitely try to find the ones you suggest. They are yorkies and are togethermost of the day with me as i work from home., for the most part they are good but at around 5month the one started to attack the smaller one out of no where. He will be calm one minute then all of a sudden lunges at his brother and bites.

Please say having land helps you prevent littermate syndrome. We went to get one blue heeler and came home with two 9 week old sisters. We have a super small house but lots of kids to help and animals too. How do you prevent this on a homestead.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog Ай бұрын
It really comes down to keeping them separated and treating them like they are solo dogs in the home. That's the best way to prevent littermate syndrome.

I wonder if letting them stay longer under the supervision of their mother can help reduce this issue. My dog was probably given to me too early and he still misses/ignores social cues from other dogs. I can see how littermate syndrome can spiral into danger faster if one dog simply does not care about the other dogs distress

There are some benefits to socialization when the pups stay with the mama dog up to 10 or 12 weeks. But there are a lot of things the humans can do during that period to create a positive outlook on new things.

We got 2 siblings girl and boy 8 weeks old. They have seperate everything except playpen but they sleep in same room, different crates. Should they occupy different spaces? we're getting another playpen to separate as their playing is getting more aggressive.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog 5 ай бұрын
Depending on their behavior it might be best to separate the crates. If they are doing fine with the crates in the same room (not touching, not able to see or touch each other) then it's fine to keep it that way for now. Just watch for changes in their behavior that indicate they need more separation. Separate pens is important.

We just got 2 litter mates they are around 4 months old. You mentioned that they should be separated & to only have an hour of playtime together. When can they start to be fully around each other for more than an hour?
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog 2 ай бұрын
It really depends on the behavior of the dogs. You can watch their body language for signs of overstimulation or getting tired and note the threshold for how long they can be together. But in general the more separated they are as they go through their developmental phases of the first year, the better!

Keeping them separate for the majority of the day will be key! This helps them build a relationship with you rather than only with each other. Of course they can get together for playtime, but this should be structured and short and preferably you have one human per pup who can help them learn good play manners.

@HowToTrainADreamDog ok. We're working on introducing crates, and then we'll move to separating. How long should we work on this? We work during the day so they share a playpen amd we watch on the camera.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog 3 ай бұрын
For crate games we recommend at least 30 minutes a day in 1-2 minute increments. More if your dog needs it! The goal will be for them to be in separate crates when you are gone. With the right training, they can nap and relax while you are away. You'll have to accommodate any necessary potty breaks, of course.
