From linguistic perspective, some of these native English 'accents' could actually be classified as dialects and in the case of Scots; another language.
@eddhardy10542 жыл бұрын
I would still say Scots is a dialect of English
@Gadavillers-Panoir2 жыл бұрын
@@eddhardy1054 well it's like Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Icelandic or Portuguese and Spanish or Ukrainian and Russian. Mutually intelligible with each other to a significant extent especially in the written forms but nevertheless classified as separate languages due to various reasons. Scotland is still a country and so should be able to classify Scots as a language.
@eddhardy10542 жыл бұрын
@@Gadavillers-Panoir so using that logic American, Australian, New Zealand & South African English are all separate languages rather than dialectical variations then?
@Gadavillers-Panoir2 жыл бұрын
@@eddhardy1054 if you are referring to the standard forms of each those then those are just accents not even dialects. 🙄 Each of those are perfectly mutually intelligible with each other. No basis to classify them as separate languages.
@eddhardy10542 жыл бұрын
@@Gadavillers-Panoir that's not true at all. Each of them differs in varying degrees regarding both lexicon & pronunciation. If you think they're mutually intelligible try watching an American listen to an Aussie (or a Brit who isn't using standard RP English for that matter) speak. They almost always have to use a subtitles facility. As to not classing them as separate languages, well that's my point exactly and works just as well when referring to the Scots dialect. 😊

@somethingsmells66942 жыл бұрын
From a Singaporean, ngl, I do agree that her accent is kinda strong, probably more so for foreigners. (the Frozen Singlish dub is the worst for foreigners to understand imo. That's Singlish at its 100%) But the good thing is, at least, you can get a feel of how some of us sound like in Singapore. We're a small nation, but our accents can vary quite a bit because of many reasons: friends, entertainment influence, teachers, and your own cultural background (because when a country like Singapore promotes bilingualism/multilingualism, it is only normal that some of us unknowingly retain certain key features from certain languages when speaking English). But what binds us together is really the slangs and and “mutually intelligible” creole called Singlish with loan words stemming from a multitude of different languages (example: leh, lorh, lah, sia, dey, eh).
@kittyfam2692 жыл бұрын
I'm from Singapore. Personally i think Singlish is just lazy talk. I'm Malay Singaporean and i don't talk like that.
@somethingsmells66942 жыл бұрын
@@kittyfam269 I can see why you think of Singlish that way. Singlish started out as a coping medium for people who spoke different tongues to attempt at communicating to one another in English, and at its core, it's still broken English. Yet as the country progressed, with English becoming more commonplace, and even overtaking the dominance of our own mother tongues, there is an increasing awareness for the need to code-switch appropriately. Perhaps that's why as we have gotten better grasp of the English language, Singlish started to tone down from its position as “complete broken and improper English”, to a form of auxiliary word and intensifier in our informal daily speech, even when we're generally using more standard English sentence structures. Kind of like what I'm doing now in this sentence lorh. I think it still serves a purpose lah, albeit coming from less than ideal roots. To be very honest, I didn't think that code-switching is a very strong suit for our representative in this particular video, hence her accent still sounds a little “thick” for the foreign ear. Despite that, I'm sure she is most definitely a polyglot and is still gifted in multiple languages for her to be surviving in Korea, a foreign land. She's very impressive imo! 😄

Harry Kane's subtitles were not right. They were basic subtitles like they are on American shows. They don't list 100% of all the words, they list the basic meaning in the subtitles if the words are out of normal order. Edit: Or, possibly like y'all splitting a contraction or creating a contraction when the person clearly didn't use it. I should not have vs I shouldn't have vs I shunt'a, are extremely easy to tell apart when speaking. But that is not always reflected in the way the subtitles read.
