Can you use Apple Airpods Pro as hearing protection?
In this video I review the Apple Airpods Pro wireless bluetooth headphones. The Airpods pro feature modes for active noise cancelation as well as sound transparency. I put them to the test with a full months use in my lawn care business using them as hearing protection.

Yes for a day the problem is you have to keep taking them in and out between yards to charge. I feel like if they had an off button that would be awesome because they are by far the best ear pods created. I wear them for everything else. Just can’t for lawn care meaning cutting grass yard to yard.

Interesting. I’ve been using mine for about a month now and I only take them out at lunch to charge. I can easily go 4.5 hours before they stop working. Plus 5 min in the case will give you an hour of battery life if you need a quick top off. I use them all morning without taking them out then at lunch pop them in the case for 15 min then wear them all afternoon. No issues. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been mowing full time for 11 seasons this year and have used a few different models of 3m headphones with radio/bluetooth. While I love them and cannot mow without them- I do feel they tend to make me a little more uncomfortable during the hotter days (Southeast TN). Even during winter they still prevent me from utilizing a hooded sweatshirt. Headed to pick up some airpods now. Cheers

The premium DeWalt earbuds do an excellent job of blocking sounds, and also work great for phone calls. They have a good microphone. These are the Jobsite Pro-X1 that cost $80. All the other cheaper versions are crap and are only good for listening and not good for phone calls. These do block loud noise better than the foam earplugs. Definitely good enough for mowing and other loud machinery.

This is the best tutorial I’ve found on KZfaq for my AirPodsPro, thank you so much for taking time to create this video and describing how to use the noise functions so well. I don’t have a lawn care business and don’t need protection for work, but I do have mild hyperacusis and they work well for me to cancel noise from outside particularly from neighbor’s lawn care or construction. They are the best recent “high tech” investment for me next to my phone specifically because of how slick they work and the noise cancelling function that I agree, works best for that outside or inside constant hum or buzz, not so much loud jolts.

Hi, do you ever wear these or isofrees with earmuffs onto also. I operate a tractor with a fan powered orchard sprayer, it is super loud so I use foam plugs and ear muffs but want to try some earbuds and muffs. Do you think it will be comfortable and will the noise canceling still work under the muffs?

Noise cancellation does not equal hearing protection. Even if active noise cancellation makes it sound softer, the sound level is still getting to your eardrum and inner ear so damage will still incur. Use these underneath a form of real hearing protection. -From an audiologist

Yes I agree and that why I put up the warning to use them at your own risk. If they were rated for ear protection surely Apple being the marketing giant that it is would be sure to point that out as a selling point. I for one will not use these long term and will be going back to using over the ear style hearing protection. Thanks for watching.

Respectfully, (I am not an audiologist) but that doesn’t make sense. Noise cancellation is literally changing the pressure waves that make the sound in a very local environment. Same as hearing protection through though different means.

Easy test. Turn off transparency and you can hear how much protection you get. It is some but not as good as ear plugs. I grew up watching my grandpa live in bliss not hearing with a smile while my grandma nagged him all day. So i am ok with that life.

My worry is that by only cancelling noice via active noice cancellation the actual pressure waves that come from loud things still hit your ears (as airpods use an open back design), you just can’t hear it due to phase cancellation, so theoretically it still would cause damage you just wouldn’t feel it

Yes, that’s why I think I mentioned I wasn’t sure about using them despite them seeming to work and to do so at your own risk since they are not officially marketed as hearing protection. Thanks for watching.

@@hinrik4404it doesn’t cancel it it sorta amplifies opposite frequencies so your brain cannot detect. If you turn off transparency you can test how much protection you really get. Basically weak ear plugs.

@@hinrik4404 idk there is a lot of debate whether it actually takes away the vibrations or if it adds more turbulence. Personally i use them to mow. 😜 my grandpa always looked happy deaf while my grandma nagged him all day. So i think it is worth the risk.

I have the $80 DeWalt ear buds and they work fantastically as simple ear plugs, actually better than foam earplugs. I'm trying to find an app that will give me use of my microphone so I can hear conversations and still get hearing protection. I don't think they have noise cancellation but I would just turn the volume down enough. I am wanting to use them as hearing protection while shooting. These earbuds do block enough of the sound to use them that way but I want to try to get the microphone working as well. I tried one app but it would only use the microphone on my phone itself. If anyone knows of an app that would allow this I'd love to hear about it.

No the gen one AirPods don’t have noise cancellation. I actually would not advise even using the airpod pros as hearing protection. I stopped using them as they are not rated for hearing protection. I don’t want to risk hearing damage. So I use the over the ear style muffs now.

The short answer should be no they cannot be used as hearing protection because they don't make a seal well. They are not certified in EN352; they do not have a certified SNR. They barely have a reduction of 22 dB. Realistically you would want a reduction of 28-30dB to be in the safe range. The safe bet is to put muffs on over your in-ears if you want to listen to music. Ear damage is not repairable. You don't want to be deaf by 60

Wow that’s surprising. They are literally the only ear bud I have ever not had issues with falling out for prolonged periods. I heard people say you can get memory foam tips from Amazon or eBay for these to replace the stock rubber ones. Maybe try that. Thanks for watching.
