The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is almost 5 years old now, but can you still use it in the year 2023? The answer is yes. The BlackBerry KEY2 is running Android 8.1 and has not received an update in several years, but most apps still work for it and the keyboard is still top notch as long as the phone is well taken care of. The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is the flagship BlackBerry Mobile device and one of the last remaining remnants of a physical keybaod phone to use in 2023. Sadly they KEY2 doesn't have 5G support and will only work for a few more years until 4G is eventually shut down.

I'm still using my key2LE. MOST apps still work but I'm noticing that some are becoming incompatible. They tell you that you have to update, then the play store won't let you update. The phone is so well built that it's out living all its software. Its frustrating how we are forced to keep upgrading phones when new ones really aren't better or even offer what older ones do.

I wish they would do another phone just like this and just up the CPU and RAM. its been my daily since it came out and i've been through a couple of them. So so good and fast for typing with, those that are all touch screens will never understand. I really hope they can come up with something to keep this going be it either outsourcing or crowdfunding related (for reference, i did try the unihertz but it just wasnt the same and the camera on the unihertz was awfull for snapchat + similar apps)

I'm using the Titan Pocket and that is scratching the itch right now, but man, seeing this, I really do miss BBs. I had the Q5, Q10, Classic, Passport, and the KeyOne BE. The biggest mistake I think BB made was to partner with Android and not continue to develop their own secure OS. There's more demand for software and security now than ever and many consumers would love a phone that's not android or apple to run the latest apps.

Yeah, I feel you. I miss my old Torch 9810.... Just wished Onward Mobility actually did something... It 'COULD' have been great if BB gave the contract to Unihertz, THEN, maybe they could have changed the physical keyboard to the proper BB layout, multiple years OS support and stuff like that... I've also contacted another great physical keyboard phone manufacturer of old - Nokia, to try and persuade them into making a physical QWERTY keyboard phone like the old E63/E71 (they were great phones) as, my complaint with HMD/Nokia is that they're releasing these 'Classics' like 3310, 8110, 8210, 2720 flip, 8000 4G, 6310 etc etc, but, some of them run KaiOS (and so can run WhatsApp/Signal etc), but, WHO THE F, is gonna want to type texts/ instant messages/emails out on an ancient T9 alpha/Numeric keypad system?? ESPECIALLY, when STILL TO THIS DAY, one of the TOP THREE uses for phone is texting/messaging/emailing??? Planet Computers with their 'Astro Slide 5G' is another potentially useful phone (though eerily similar to the old (but also at the time great) Nokia E7... In my view, and from what I've researched, physical QWERTY keyboard phones CAN STILL have a place in the phone industry.... I mean Christ... I'd LOVE to buy a modern updated Torch 9810!!! or even a Passport! 😎🇬🇧

@@TechOdyssey Very Durable devices. I had my BlackBerry classic go flying out of the "cell phone pocket" down in the leg of my pants, when I was running to catch a light rail train. I didn't even know it was missing until it was too late, but a girl found it and contacted me. I got it back from her and it was just fine. The screen was not broken and the keyboard was not damaged. All it had were a few insignificant dings on the frame. Even after I got a Keyone and Key2, I still used the Classic sometimes, up until they cut off 3g and it didn't work anymore. I still have it, but I can't use it anymore cuz of 3g. The BB Bold series, which the Classic was modeled after, were probably the best built, sturdiest phones ever made. They also had the best call quality. BB Bold 9000 had the best call quality of any cell phone, ever. It sounded like a landline. The built in stereo speakers also sounded exceptionally good for phone speakers.

I'm using the KeyOne Black Edition, it's still fully usable in 2023 and I use social media apps on it, what isn't useable as much is BlackBerry Hub as that integration with Gmail died a few months ago and I only noticed when I changed my email password and couldn't get it back into my blackberry hub. I was using the Classic until February when things started going wrong, the keyboard wouldn't work replying to texts but was fine with emails and notes then the network connectivity dropped and never came back so I replaced it with an iPhone 7 because it was cheaper than replacing it with a Priv and I wanted a similar sized phone for when I'm outside, I do have a tendency to drop things and I do not want to have to replace the KeyOne there is very little in Europe with QWERTY keyboard and buying from the UK will make it very expensive with import fees.

@@ColinsCity I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a key2/LE for a while now but they are so rare overhere (Netherlands) I've never even seen one irl. That was a risk I was willing to take bc that was a new phone with reasonable specs for it's price then, but dropping so much cash for an obsolete/eol device I've never held in my hands makes me hesitant even when I know BB build quality (my 9700bold also survived way longer then a smartphone should). Fun thing of using a classic in 2023 is people either go 'hurrdurr crackberry' or they think I'm some hardcore criminal bc of some publicity round encrypted BB's a few years back :D

@@suryanima_chandranima I'm glad you're liking it. Truthfully, I prefer my Unihertz Titan so I haven't gotten around to replacing the Keyone's battery but they're both great and I enjoy kinda popping back and fourth.

ALSO... 😎🇬🇧

I'm still using my Key2 that I purchased brand new in 2020, but 4 months ago I dropped it in water. It was submerged for about 2 seconds and after doing a few crazy things- sort of like HAL 9000 while Dave was shutting him down- it reset on its own and has been mostly working ever since. However, the space bar is dead (but fingerprint sensor still works) and the volume rocker button has its moments. I can type with the physical keyboard by using the sym button to prompt the space bar on the screen, but it's not the same so I'm hoping to get it repaired soon with a new space bar or keyboard.

I miss Blackberry. Many can talk crap about them, but if not for Blackberry, we would not have the Apple iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy S, Google Pixels, One Plus, and many others. Blackberry paved the way. And sadly, when they stopped making phones, security was gone, and the keyboard gone too. Since the keyboard was gone, I have had more typos since upgrading from my 9300 Curve many years ago. But at least the company is still around focusing on software security development in the automotive industry.

Thank you so much for the great content! I really want to fire my Blackberry Classic up and use it for calls, text and emails. My Blackberry is unlocked, so is there a carrier that will work with the Blackberry Classic in 2023?

I just fired up my KeyOne today incidently to do a SIM card check for mobile hotspot. The hotspot on my Titan Slim stopped working. Still working with Unihertz tech support to figure out what's wrong 😕 I can't believe how much bigger the KeyOne feels after being on the Slim.

I'm currently using the Key2 as my secondary phone. Mine is the Indian version and consequently I've not got any security updates since 2018. I use it for mails, data and for calling (when I don't have network coverage in my primary phone) The main reason why I switched to a newer phone is because of security. I wouldn't risk banking on a phone that hasn't had an update in years. The bummer is after I purchased the phone, I just got one month of security update. I was pissed that in spite of spending a handsome amount on outdated hardware, I did not get support from BlackBerry. Although I'm a crackberry head, I'm glad they are dead in consumer phone market because with this kind of support, they have no business in this market

I haven't used BB for decades now, but my question is... couldn't you install a custom ROM to get it up to date? Then install the BB software? Like I said I haven't been in the BB world in decades. I loved mine (8830?) back in the day. I used to type books on those keyboards! I even remember the one time I had a ball replacement 😂😂😂😂😂😂 all I could do was answer and end calls

@TechOdyssey Because of this video and all of your great videos I decided to get my Key2 screen fixed and fire it back up as daily driver!!! Two questions for you. -Do you think it's safe to use banking and credit card apps on Key2? -Google won't let me put my password into Blackberry hub email, so I can't get it to work/update. Did you run into this if so do you know of a fix? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

Gave up on it November 2021 when the camera (annoying but no big deal) and then a couple weeks later keyboard (big deal obviously) tapped out. Bought a Pixel 6 thinking I'd only need it for a few months until the Onward Mobility phone would come out then I'd be back in business. Yeah that never happened. 😶‍🌫️ Still on the Pixel 6.

Any idea if you can get/use the spotify app? I am wanting to switch back to a phone with a keyboard and would ideally like to buy a used or refurbished blackberry Key2 or Key2LE instead of a unihertz phone but as they all run on outdated systems that are not maintained I want to make sure I can still access spotify before I make the jump that will literally be my only dealbreaker

I remember my BB days. I started with the 950 AOL Mobile Communicator that had AOL Instant Messenger on it lol I moved on to the 7730, 7100t, 7105t, Pearl 8100, Pearl 8120, and finally the Bold 9780. My favorites were the 7100 series and the 8100 series because they were compact but still easy as heck to type on thanks to SureType. The software, games and themes on the devices were fun to play around with and kept me organized with college and medical appointments.
