You can use your Steam Deck for virtually any day to day task. You can handle files and folders, you can transfer them through the network using something like Warpinator, or you can also just use a thumb drive.
Installing applications also works, and you have access to everything that's on Flathub. You also can get any application available as an AppImage.
All of this should basically get you covered for your everyday tasks: web browsing with Firefox or Chromium, including support for any extension you want, handling your files with Dolphin, the file manager, moving them around with Warpinator or a USB drive, or installing a calendar and email app like Geary or GNOME Calendar. Spectacle handles all your screenshot needs, you can install VLC for video playback, Spotify or YTMusic Desktop for youtube music, or any number of music players for your local collection, you even have a system monitor.
Note-taking is also pretty easy, thanks to Obsidian being available on the Deck, as well as Joplin, Simplenote, Standard Notes, or Cherry Tree.
You've got your complete desktop Steam client, for all your Steam Games, but you can also install the Heroic Games launcher for Epic Games and Good Old Games, or Lutris, for virtually anything else.
Games will support keyboard and mouse input, or using your Steam Deck as the controller while playing on a bigger screen. Discord works as well, and you can have an audio chat using Discord while you're gaming, or you can use the regular old Steam chat if you're playing a Steam game.
If you like to record your gameplay sessions or stream them, OBS is available on Discover as well.
You can install a plethora of office suites, like LibreOffice, or OnlyOffice, or even WPS Office.
For email and calendars, you can use Evolution, or the Kontact suite, and you'll get basically outlook, but made for KDE, and a bit harder to setup.
Video conferencing works perfectly as well using the onboard mic of the Steam Deck, and a USB webcam. You have access to Skype, Discord, Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
You can't install docker, for example, or run your own local server, at least not easily. You CAN access pacman, the package manager for arch, the Linux distro on which Steam OS is based, and you CAN use it with the "-r" command line option to install stuff somewhere you actually have authorization to write on, but that's going to create a few problems as you'll have to define the PATH variables to most of the things you install this way, so it will make things a bit more complex.
You can also just use virtual machines. Because, yes, the Steam Deck supports virtualization, so you can install GNOME Boxes and run Vms, in which you'll be able to install any OS, any server you want, or compile your code there.
You have FreeCAD for CAD modeling, you've got tons of tools for students for data visualisation, writing math formulas, plotting graphs...
Now, if you're thinking of bringing the Steam Deck to class or meetings, and use it as a laptop, propped on some kind of dock, using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I'd say don't.

I actually hope I can mod my Skyrim using the creation kit via steam deck. Instead of keyboard and mouse, I would love to create mods on the Fly while using something as comfortable as the steam deck. But I guess the only problem after that that I would run into is, the tools in creation cat would be too small to see and the kit itself would have to be formatted better for the steam deck screen or maybe they Implement some kind of zoom in feature they can be prompted by one of the controls on the Steam deck.

It's not like I'm going to daily drive it as my PC, I just want it to play games in desktop mode, be used to watch something, use the internet, and write a document once in a blue moon. Seems like it can do all of this and more if I REALLY want to so ey, I'm over buying a laptop, I'll just wait for my Steam Deck, buy a 15" screen for some travels when I want to use it as a PC/laptop and it'll be grand.

It's really cool when a company gives the user the right to decide how and for what purposes to use the device. I hope that in the future it will be possible to install several operating systems. I really enjoy your Steam Deck coverage, such good content and great tips for the users. I am thinking about getting a Deck but I was wondering if there was a bypass charging option as I am planning on having it plugged in for the duration of my desktop session. At the same time, I am scared that I may harm the battery that way. What I have in mind is like those old school laptops. If you are using it for a long time, just take the battery out and use the charger as power source, you know? Since Steam Deck isn't that power hungry I am hoping that this is something that I can achieve. I plan on making it my handheld console and my desktop PC which will replace my ultrabook with Nvidia MX gpu. In this price range, I couldn't find a feasible laptop or pc setup in my region unfortunately and I won't be able to afford beyond what I can spare for a Deck, a monitor and a keyboard. Hence my curiosity with it's behavior as a desktop machine.

really great and interesting video! I feel as though the gaming part was somewhat sped through though. No mention of resolution, performance, or other challenges compared to just using it handheld... I'd assume the biggest issue is the default res on Deck is 1280x800 which is great, but the big issue with connecting it to a screen is you'd normally want to use the native res of said screen.. ie - 1080P. With that in mind i'd assume the performance would drop quite a bit or you'd have to make more sacrifices. Besides that lack of coverage though, I think you really hit all the nails on the head here. What an impressive system! I'm glad Valve has decided to go this way and I'm hoping it has a long and healthy life.

I found a better audio program called ocenaudio. It automatically detects the microphone. You don’t have to highlight the entire audio to raise the gain. But it doesn’t have a pause button to put a recording session on hold.

Can't you install rootless Docker? It's not the most compatible thing, but if I remember correctly it lives in the user home and runs with user privileges. It probably allows you to eg. run various database engines to develop with.

Having recently started work after University, I have two meetings each day, one explaining to my team what I did, and another to a person on the client side. 😂 It's meh at best. Oh my god, setting up the dev environment is soooooo relatable 😂😂😂 Second edit, lol. Yes, I also code AND have meetings inside a VM, coding is still okay, having meetings inside a vm running on a server in another country is a mess on a good day.

Now a cool niche thing could be if you could plug the SD into a PC and share the software processes between them. Ex. Discord running on steam deck or having the steam deck record the main screen, etc. Could turn into a content monster with this. Idea being youre taking that pressure off of your gaming rig and allows for a complete ecosystem. You can have one, or the other, or both at the same time! I guess it would work the reverse kind of situation if you had a ultrabook alongside the steam deck. Basically I want a 2 way steam link through cable lol.

As long as the game is added as a non-Steam game after installation and configure the touchscreen to emulate a mouse via Steam Input, you're pretty much good to go. Now, I don't know if anyone has actually demoed configuring the Deck's touchscreen to be used as a mouse so you can try messing around with Steam Input.

There are two kinds of home computing. The nothing stuff, emails, chat, shopping and streaming and a tiny amount of use of something like Libre Office. Until the deck comes out with connection to a big screen TV, can I do my Sunday online grocery shop in bed, do some email contacts and well accessing a bluray drive and hdisk drive, for streaming stored content, are the real questions. So the real question can I wander from the lounge room with it's connection to that dock and TV to the bedroom and switch to that dock and it's TV. I have a high end PC and the applications run, realistically, Firefox, Thunderbird, Libre Office, Handbrake, VLC, Notepad++, Irfanview and a bunch of annoying game launchers, so many users, use so few applications in reality and I am a retired computer geek, so few apps. For me it will replace things like Nvidia Shield TV and so much more advanced than a TV streamer, so it is all about getting the absolute most out of a big screen TV. How much do people spend on accessories to those, how much hardware does the Steam Deck and Dock replace and turns any big screen TV into a full featured PC, as you wander around those house linking to different decks and TVs. I would continue to play games on the toy operating system Windows but sometimes I might play in bed on the big screen and order some takeaway delivered via Firefox. Try demoing streaming Netflix et al. Steam Deck and Dock, not a hand held gaming console, they are the essential big screen TV accessory.

I want that too. I'd probably run some other distro and use a display manager to log in with a password, use Plasma under Wayland instead of X, and log out then back in onto Big Picture mode. The password is a no-compromise thing for me. I'd even encrypt the root partition. I'd just use an USB stick to store the keyfile, like you'd use a regular key for your house or car. [That'd break sleep though. Perhaps not if I log in Big Picture mode, actually. I'd like to figure this out.]

Valve have said it'll be possible to boot from the sdcard and while that wouldn't be ideal for performance it ought to still be usable. I'm hoping they'll also support boring from an external ssd as I'm planning to hack together an LCD panel+driver with the guts from a USB c dock, pd power bank, portable keyboard and trackpad into a 3d printed clamshell and basically make a DIY nextdock/mirabook

I'm looking to use the Steam Deck the same way as I've been using the VCS since 2020 (in fact the VCS has been my way of 'prepping' for the Steam Deck). One neat solution if you're into Ubuntu/Unity (I've been getting a lot of 'muscle-memory' with the UI) and want a similar experience to it in KDE to Mint, elementeryOS or Ubuntu - Latte Dock - one click - UI flips, can be tweaked to insane lengths, and you preserve all the optimized driver-goodness of KDE. So ya - desktop gaming will be a big use-case outside of SteamOS, just as Ubuntu is my daily driver on the VCS with AtariOS being 'available' when I want to dip-into it. In fact, the VCS at half the cores and threads of the Ryzen Steam Deck is using, has served me well getting ready for mine. *Libre office is great btw - I even used that on the Mac professionally full-time over a decade ago in an office setting since that particular office wasn't Microsoft fans. I probably know it better than the Microsoft Suite now. Also if (you) 'The Linux Experiment' would like to share/join with the Steam Deck (Linux) Discord community - I'm pretty sure they'd love to have you! (they're great - they put me onto Latte in a mere 5 minutes of back and forth - I even sent a (killer) burger recipe to the person who provided the quick-solution (saving me hours of rabbit-hole digging) - because 'we all gotta eat' and the internet doesn't allow me to shove food through the screen - yet).
I used a MAC for 30 days, and I’m glad it’s over
