Older hardware in Linux is a pain in the ass to get working. I wanted to use Linux on my Old 2009 macbook and the wifi card doen’t work on most distros and the geforce 6400m official drivers brake the entire system. I had a AMD A10 APU, and the graphics driver refuses to run Vulkan, only a unstable driver make it work, and run like shit. I keep with Windows unfortunately. I dont wat to be an expert on linux, i just want to use my computer and play my games

A lot of people watch Twitch streams. This may be an exaggeration, but if you open the top categories for games on Twitch, most of the games will not be available on Linux, or for example, as in the case of CS2, the game itself works, but the league in which all skill players play requires a kernel level anti-cheat. I just wanted to suggest that this is the main problem why people choose gaming in your tests as the thing where they have difficulty. (Latest FIFA's, Fortnite, Warzone, PUBG, GTA V Rage MP etc.)

Why on earth would M$ partner with Ubuntu. I would think that Debian or Fedora would be better.

Actually installing steam from the official steam website is better than installing it from the app center. It works better.

As much as the nvidia drivers have been so much better than in the past, I haven't been able to get Wayland working properly (Manjaro, RTX 4080). My desktop experience with my AMD laptop in Wayland is smoother and more stable than my tower using proprietary nvidia drivers and x. I'd wager a guess that a lot of people that are having trouble with stability are stuck in Jensen's driver purgatory. 😛

For software issues RDP and general OS performance has been an issue. I run linux in a VM on a server and that has been very problematic connecting to it. GPU has also been an issue because it is a VM and GPU passthrough is very spotty. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Also Nvidia and AMD do have software support but it isn't full support. They have a lot more features still on windows than they do on linux. Try enabling them on linux and you are digging through the command line where as on linux they have actual GUIs. So GPU support is better than it used to be but it still isn't 1st tier.

Linux is the only os that will let you run dd over your boot disk to completely destroy the machine. Windows is the only os that you can upgrade right from DOS 1.0 all the way to Windows 11 upgrading Linux between major releases has got a lot better but it's still tricky if you did anything other than a standard install. Linux is the only os that isn't going to send all your personal data to the cloud and sell it back to you via AI. Most people don't want to boot an os from a memory stick, pcs are cheap so they don't need a new windows license and they don't care much about massive customisation preferring instead features that are finished and work. Linux is the only os I would run server software or embedded software on, its perfect for that. As a desktop it's hopeless, every year since 2004 we've been saying this is the year of the Linux desktop and it never happens because it's just too complicated and you don't get far without having to open a terminal and edit files that are not where a random web page said they were. I use mint daily and its as good as it gets but still has its moments.

I have used linux on a wide variety of devices bowth new and old and most of the time it runs better and its easier to set up for me than a windows install. I have been usuing fedora 39-40 with gnome for a while as my only OS on my main pc which is a desktop i builded myself and it has been rock solid and it runs better on my pc than windows ever did which while alright it crahsed quite often. Now i have a new gaming laptop and i installed win 11 because i do really need windows for certain tasks and for me it was the perfect solution so i could get away with not dualbooting, and the windows install way way more painfull: 1º i tried ubuntu on an USB and everything seemed to work just fine 2ºthe windows installer didnt recognized my trackpad nor my wifi or more importantñy the m.2 ssd which was on the laptop. 3ºi had to get the driver from the gygabyte website when in ubuntu 24.04lts the nvme was being recognized just fine as well as everything else. 4ºafter getting the m.2 drive showing on the installer i had also to get the wifi driver as well so i could update and install all the other stuff 5ºi had to go to the nvidia website to install the dgpu driver unlike on linux 6º even after setting everything up sometimes windows just shits itself while i have never had that issue even of lower end hardware on linux or at least not at that level, but in this case is worse because its a brand new gaming laptop. In my experience linux was allways way easier to set up and getting running than windows ever has. I just think people are used to its shittiness.

iTried Tuxedo & it's a joke OS, unusable for doing any actual work. For example, the 'so-called file manager' doesn't even have a folder tree in the left pane, & (of course) doesn't follow the displayed contents in the right pane either, & it won't launch any portable apps or other windows programs without going through a maze of sadistic hoops to try & get things even partially working, & no options for virtual machines even show up besides 'Gnome Boxes' or whatever, which crashes when trying to install a windows OS into it = it's all a big, sick joke. All these linux channels & everything else to do with Linux & BSD is all a ridiculous $cam, because nobody has or ever will make even the slightest common sense attempt to make it a decent desktop OS, even compared to absolute trash like WIndows 10 = LOL!! 7 is better than 10 also, but XP is the best = the ONLY operating system with a (fairly) intuitive file management interface besides 95/98/ME =) I E-Mailed them about this & U can bet they will never do anything to fix it =P It's all so pointless = just a prank! Like that Nobara thing that won't even install unless you have 'latest greatest era' nVidia cards, or 'Ghost BSD' that tries 2 only run in RAM, without telling U up front, & all those bazillion other 'distros' = seems the only thing left 2 try is UALinux, which supposedly offers a 'Proxmox' VM-able version (Free), & an interface option similar to 'windows classic', but not getting my hopes up =P REally all we need is XP but with a few tweaks, like enable vertical sync in the desktop to avoid horizontal tearing in web videos, & disable the fake BSOD when changing motherboards or machines (moving boot drives), & adding support for drives over 2 terabytes (maybe BTRFS support or something?) NTFS is absolute trash, so nothing could be worse! =) Oh yeah, & the whole thing with 'FAT32' being' limited = no, all my dries R 2TB & U can even partition with 4KB clusters so no less efficient than NTFS, + about (literally) 20X faster 2 fix an error. N E 1 who wants money or whatever 2 fix this stuff, let me know at 'balkanguy (at) live (dot) com' =)

The first time I tried installing Linux was in the early 2000s. Woo-boy have things improved since then. I didn't start using Linux daily until just a few years ago. That initial hardware/installation hurdle was a _huge_ hurdle. As for gaming controllers, my Xbox controller works fine when wired, but no bluetooth compatibility. That stinks. I know there's a third-party driver that is supposed to get it up and running, but I haven't been able to figure out how to install and/or get it working.

Another neat features is the ability to use your pc as a audio sink over Bluetooth (Windows can do it too but not by default) Its a great way to have dedicated audio streams in things like OBS without having another app open on that device or having to tab out of the current program

asides from the driver itself, the control center on linux is bare bones at least, compared to the windows counterpart. I fail to understand why i can change so many settings in windows but not on linux. The settings speak a clear language: nvidia doen't even consider linux a desktop environment at all. Just a OS for servers. I do understand their reasoning behind closed source. But they could still do waaaay better.... As a customer paying nvidias insanely high prices, i want free choice of the OS i'm using. I feel like the green goblins try to force me into windows as much as microsoft itself.

banning TikTok is a demented political, totalitarian and anti-competitive move that shows the West can't compete with China or others. It's also a desperate move to get the young back inside the censorship and media control bubble that the Western states created for some times now. Look at the situation in Ukraine and how few Western journalists are there. In the age of internet, smartphones with camera and live vlogging we are completely "protected" from the reality. TikTok offered a small and narrow window of reality to make it pass censorship... it had to go.

For Obsidian or Evernote, I think the best and most powerful direct alternative is Joplin. I've been using it for years now. I actually keep Obsidian around for is Canvas feature, but use Joplin for everything else. It's quirky in different ways than Obsidian, but it's more powerful and flexible in subtle ways and it's what I keep coming back to and is what houses my second brain.

The weirdest thing I've experienced is I recently switched from Arch to Garuda KDE Lite and for some reason Bluetooth wasn't installed out of the box, I had to install Blutie and Bluetoothctl myself in order to get it to work, which was so Odd because in Arch, no matter what desktop I selected, Bluetooth just worked out of the box.
