Can You Wash Wool in the Snow?

Long before the advent of the washing machine, humans wore clothes that needed to stay clean. And one of the oldest and best methods for keeping wool clothes, rugs, blankets, coats, sheepskin, and everything else clean was to haul it outside and give it a good scrubbing in the snow.
Think I'm joking?
Think again!
Here I show you how I prefer to wash my clothes in the snow. Note that heavily soiled items may require more scrubbing. If you live in an urban area and don't want to have to wash your garment a second time, be sure to choose a patch of snow that can't be visited by any stray dogs. Yup, you heard me right.
Also, be sure to incorporate a snow angel into any and all snow-washing rituals.

In my area, rag rugs are cleaned this way too. Thanks for the information. Nice snow angel.

Love this video! Washing my woollies in snow is my favourite way to get them clean and smelling so fresh! Sometimes on very cold winter nights I'll hang my sweater outdoors overnight for a quick refresh. I wish we had more snow in Toronto this year though!

WOW ! You have given me a super idea on how to get my wool Karastan rug clean. BUT I am going to wait to tackle cleaning this in the snow when we get above 20 degrees. We have another week of super cold here in Alaska -45 tonight warming up to -33 tomorrow. Great video.

AGREED - that’s a wee bit too cold to do this comfortably. Especially if you plan on making snow angels while you wait.

This was so cool! Alas, due to climate change it hardly snows in Indiana. I'm assuming a mud bath would be a bad idea, right?? 😆 Thanks for the cool video! I will tell this to my family in Iowa and Wisconsin!

Indeed, I suspect a mud bath wouldn’t produce the desired effect! Though it would produce SOME effect…

My grandmother was an “Armenian letter bride “ it’s a thing . She was sent to NYC to Marry a man in order to escape the Armenian genocide. She brought thru Lebanon on camel back some Armenian rugs . Every winter when it’s snowed my mom had us kids take those wool rugs out in the snow and sweep the snow on them . That was the ONLY way they got cleaned then , and what I still do today ! They shine in color Brilliance when they come back in! ( but then again I hang ALL my laundry out on a clothes line all year long .. yes even in the snow .. only rain will force me to hang them in my basement or the spare room .) I think it’s fun to bring stuff like cardboard clothes back in the house 😂

Your snow looks very dry and fluffy; I suppose it’s quite cold? Would melty or wet snow be less effective? (Or just less pleasant). Do you have an idea how cold is “cold enough” to do a good job of snow washing? Thanks for making this video, Clara!

It was 14F when I did this, and we had a wonderful fresh puffy snow. But I think anything under, I don’t know, 28 degrees would be ok? Once the air temperature is closer to freezing, you’ll be losing the benefit of the snow and basically just grinding water into the wool. Which could be fine, as long as it’s not a super heavy garment, or an ancient rug with tender dye you don’t want to soak too much. I’d say use a pair of dirty socks as a sample test. Wash one in your snow, and wash the other in the laundry, and see how they do. Then you’ll have a baseline to work with.

I wish I had known about snow washing wool items back when I lived in MN and had access to snow. How do you suggest we clean our wool items when we live without snow??

Have you tried placing them in the bathroom while you're taking a shower and letting the steam work its magic that way?
