This is Spiritual Studies session 6. This talk connects the beginning of religion, Shamanism/Animism, and the modern day monotheism as it's understood in the modern day. Although this culture isn't well remembered of understood nowadays, this talk helps us realize how much of our culture, language, and religious tropes are accredited to the Canaanites. This talk subsequently helps us understand the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, and the surrounding Egyptian and Babylonian polytheism of the ancient world.

Why would you not go into the Mesopotamian texts, when they are the origins of the Bible that we have today? ( See Mauro Biglino, ex Vatican translator, Gerald Clark, Billy Carson, Matt Lecroix. I don't think you really can have a full discussion on this topic without knowing the original texts. Otherwise you are just speculating on the Vatican altered versions . Which were deliberately altered to obscure the truth.

I appreciate the explication of your thesis without a bias toward a pious interpretation. I have a question regarding the El/Yahweh complex that I'm trying to understand. I have read that in the Canaanite myth El was the creator god similar to the later Ouranous in Greek myth. Yahweh and Zeus, (in their respective mythologies) came later and were tasked with organizing the world. Something you did not mention that I might be mistaken about and would appreciate clarification is that Yahweh was originally the Canaanite god of metallurgy, copper specifically since Canaan was known for its copper smelters. When the Israelites adopted the Canaanite pantheon El was the chief god and yahweh was not conflated with El. However, the Yahweh sect among the Israelites grew more powerful over time (the Bronze age demand for copper) and Yahweh eventually was promoted to the chief god, the sky god. Can you or anyone else in this comment section remark on what I posted? Thank you!
@cgdahlin

Apologies on the long delay, just now seeing this. I recently went back over my Canaanite research for "the Sky Father" session. There I got more clarity on the subject. In truth, academics are still feuding about this complex interrelationship. The latest trend is the belief that Yahweh was a warrior deity (thus association with metallurgy) and more specific to the area that we now call Israel, whereas El was more predominant in the Levant (areas north of Israel). Feasibly the mending or conquest between tribes in the area syncretized the beliefs to later assimilate the deities as one. But even still, this assimilation took time to fully come together as "God." It's a very curious subject, one that I think new discoveries will continue to reveal.

Really excellent work here and thanks once again. I am not sure that you haven’t read this nor am I sure your audience generally would find this terribly interesting but I am positive that you would. Michael Heiser has done a very good job of advancing the thesis of a Yawehistic divine council in his work “The Unseen Realm.” It doesn’t advance the Canaanite position but does I think provide a usable clarification of the Israelite conception which would nuance your understanding by way of contrast. Also some of what Gary Greenberg advanced is somewhat helpful on the Israelites transition from Atenism to Canaanite syncretism. Which might be useful to you by way of contrast with your understanding of the Canaanite conceptions. I am really pleased that you modulated your thesis on Zoroastrianism slightly that really demonstrates a real maturity of thought. Nevertheless your work there is still very intriguing and I think somewhat explains how the Israelites were able to accept much of what you stated on that subject.

Thank you, I'll refer to these works if I can manage to loop back to this topic. Yes, there are many fascinating to approach the topic of the rise of monotheism. Besides atenism and zoroastrianism, there's also the observation of the one above all in ancient shamanism and paganism. The idea had floated around for quite sometime, so curious to investigate the why it got exemplified and gained such footing.

Oooo, hmmm. From what I've researched, it's quite complicated. The more recent video on "The Sky Father" put Canaanites into the Sumeria, Babylon, Zoroastrian influence camp. However, it seems the levant was very much the meeting point between the Fertile Crescent influence and the Proto Indo European influence. Of course, it's always much more messy than history tends to let on.

It’s fun to try and decipher the information this way, but still keep some of the fantasy alive. I don’t really see any point to studying religion except to try and extract any real information from them about history as I can. To me it’s seems pretty obvious that all these middle eastern religions are all just telephoned versions of older stories that probably have some real information stored in them. Take Enki for example, where the God of Sweet/Fresh water threatens to destroy all the young gods Enki puts him to sleep and slays him. Enki then also gets titles like canal builder. Seems to me like “Enki” or the cult of “Enki” figured out how to build canals and irrigation lines preventing major river floods. Thus at first putting the god to sleep, and then making more permanent canals to make river flooding a thing of the past. Then later when Tiamat is raging(the goddess of Bitter/salt water), it sounds like as story of the flooding of the Persian gulf that would have effected the people who lived there. The gods again go to Enki to solve the problem but he’s unable. As a god of water or a god of wisdom you’d think he’d have something, but he doesn’t. Why? Because canals wouldn’t be effective at stopping the Persian gulf from flooding with salt water so what worked on the first one, won’t work on this one. Then you have the whole Marduk thing which could be a telling of a story about a meteor hitting the Persian gulf around the safe time the waters were starting to stop rising thus giving the impression of a god shooting Tiamat with an arrow. I gotta look it up again but I remember reading something about them thinking they found a small meteor crater in an area that today is dry land, but would have been flooded by the Persian gulf in the past. Idk, I think there might be some merit to trying to piece together the few thousand years before writing through the myths written down when there finally was writing. Like if 5000 years from now someone was trying to figure out the meaning we carved presidents faces into mt Rushmore and all they had to go on was some 4000 year old story some kid wrote on the internet about how Washington rerouted the Delaware river to kill the British or how Lincoln held the nation together with his extra long arms. Some crazy wacky stories that are what survives of the real story behind the myth. Most ancient religions were more like early patent offices. You come up with a great idea and then create a whole religion to protect you intellectual property and control how the information gets passed along. As the high priest of Enki you know the secrets of canal building and only share bits and pieces of information with those selected or volunteered to become a priest of your religion. Like if in Free Masonry you actually were learning very ancient and detailed masonry information until you got to the highest rank and were told the final secrets to being a master stone mason. That’s how religions started. These are just earlier corporations and entrepreneurs.

If you study the Baal cycle, you will see that El sides with Yam against Baal in the mythical cycle that preceded the Bible. So when we see the wars between El (the god of the Old Testament) and Baal in the Bible, that's actually a continuation of the hostilities that preceded the writing of the Bible, and this probably represents different tribes that were fighting to control a region of land. So Biblical mythology is, literally, a continuation of polytheism's battles and narratives, and in one of the Psalms El (with whom the Jews believed to have a special contract) speaks in the "assembly of the gods" and tells the other gods that he plans to have them all killed or that they will die. Nietzsche later, of course, mocks El and announces the Demiurge's own death. But when the Psalms were written, people were clearly still polytheistic. Also, Jeremiah laments that Jews were worshiping the Queen of Heaven (Astarte) with cakes and incense and documents that they attribute fertility of the land to her, and accuse Jehovah of bringing drought and destroying the fertility of the land. So there was active resistance against the imperial violence of monotheism from early on.

I would say monotheism is a terrible word to describe YHWH worship. An unfortunate name. Rather he is the God who made the other gods, appointed them over the nations, who at some point rebelled and were/are/will be judged (psalm 82). And yes, I know many make a claim El and Yahweh are different characters in this poem but there simply isn't enough evidence to make that claim.

Old testament not related to old? Principalities and powers=the gods of the nations of the old testament. And it continues the motif of defeat of those gods, especially by bringing the Gentiles under the rule of Yahweh and out from under the rule of those princes you see Yahweh fight against (Daniel 10 has a bit of this). You even get Lotan again in revelation, "that ancient serpent, called the devil, and satan". And the central idea of Christ's death, his days in the heart of the earth (where he confronted the same class of characters and proclaimed their defeat) and ressurection. Or consider Christ's quote of the beginning of psalm 22 from the cross and read psalm 22 and the discussion of the strong bulls of Basham. No, the new testament is firmly a continuation of the old and addressing the same topics and continuing the same polemics. The new testament God is just as angry as the old and the old testament God is just as compassionate as the new. Sacrificing his son on the cross demonstrates both those things rather plainly. Whether you believe the narrative or not is another matter of course.

EL is short for ELOHIM, which is the Hebrew word for "god" that got transliterated into god or in the case of the particular " god" YAYWEY, as THE LORD. This particular Elohim was allotted the Israelite people and the land of Canaan. From the line of Jacob ONLY. See Deut. 38 and Psalms 82. This is why Yaweh had to move Abraham to the land of Canaan or Palestine. Because after the council in Deut. 38 met, this was YHWY"s portion.

There's one big problem with your claim. Even though we have archaeological evidence of Zoroastrianism dating back probably 600 BC, archaeological evidence does not provide what was this religion about. The Avista texts speaks what Zoroastrianism is about. However, the avesta text wre written somewhere between 4th century CE to 11th century CE. Therefore Judaism and Christianity being influenced by Zoroastrianism is unlikely.

Zoroastrianism was and is monotheistic, like the holy trinity of Christianity. Evidence suggests Judaism didn't become monothiestic until after Persian rule in the second temple period.

Arabic came to the region later, around the 7th century or so during the Islamic Invasions. Canaanite would be closer to Aramaic or Biblical Hebrew. Arabic is definitely great to learn, but possibly not as helpful in Canaanite linguistics
