Here in Canada, the first-past-the-post voting system works this way: We don’t actually vote for our leaders, we only vote for our local MPs; afterwards, the leader of the party with the most MPs becomes the Prime Minister. So maybe the conservatives did get the most votes overall, but the Libs still got the most seats somehow

To be fair, even leftist organizations like the NKVD & Gestapo were less extreme than this or other similar measures taken by today's leftists. 10 years ago (ish), a guy that made youtube videos about this directly compared liberty of expression in socialist germany in the 1930s vs various socialist nations at the time, including socialist germany of today. The result was as long you didn't belong to, or talk about 'That group', socialist germany's govt was actually a lot more reasonable & allowed greater freedom to its citizens. The people in question are unironically worse than the german socialists (nazis) at the height of their power.

Worth mentioning since most people don't know, or care, about Canadian politics (most Canadians included), but there is no political conservatism in Canada. The Conservative party is only nominally conservative, so even if the Liberal party gets tossed out entirely in the next election - which is very likely - the Conservative party replacing them will mostly just carry on the existing policy trend, albeit at a much reduced rate. Unlike our American counterparts, us Canadians don't really have a solid framework of national principles to fall back on and base any conservative or traditionalist movement around because we functionally ejected most of that back in the 60s when the idea that "anyone can be a Canadian" grew in political and cultural prominence. As a result, what passes for "conservatism" in Canada is constructed entirely around the framework provided to it by its opposite. If you don't believe me, take a few minutes and listen to Conservative MPs speak in the house of commons. More often than not, they'll use the same language and discuss the same issues as the Liberals or the NDP.
