Captured here is brand new Engine 1 of the Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services (VFRS), which was put into service on December 5th, 2023. Engine 1 is a Rosenbauer RTX electric fire truck, making it the first-ever electric fire engine in Canada, and one of the first in all of North America!
The RTX is a state-of-the-art fire truck with many innovative and useful features. It can drive for about 100 kilometers on a single electric charge and can pump water for about two hours. It has all-wheel-drive and an adjustable suspension, which can make it easier for firefighters to enter and exit the vehicle, or adapt it to drive off-road. The truck also has enhanced maneuverability as all four wheels can turn (all-wheel-steering, countersteering, and crab steering). Apart from this, it saves fuel costs and minimizes firefighter exposure to toxic fumes that regular fire trucks produce.
Engine 1 now serves the Strathcona, Chinatown, and Downtown Eastside neighborhoods of the city, running out of Fire Hall No. 1.
What do you think of this fire truck? Let me know in the comments!

Hating on new things just show how closed minded you are. We have had diesel electric hybrids since ww2 in submarines and it worked out. This won’t replace everything but it has a chance to do well in urban built up areas. If you hate evaluation and change might as well get your local fire department to go back the horse drawn carriages.

I Wonder how good they are servicing in emergency sittuation, I mean Electric Vehicle servicing in public service is not a new idea, in my city already have electric taxi and even more low deck electric buses, and despite they aren't 100% more comfortable (the AC not as cool as Diesel one, maybe for energy saving) than the diesel one, it's a great idea to reduce air and sound pollution that already a big problem in the big cities. The Idea is the buses or taxis can go like 200-300 KM in full charge and at the end of the day you can charge it all night so in the next day it can servicing again. But in the emergency services, it kinda, you know, unpredictable. So the vehicle sometime exceed more than be able. I think 100 km is enough but if it's doing frequent task, it's like let th battery burn, it's like your phone if you charging it, it will get hot and if you use it for heavy gaming or rendering, it will get hot too. The battery cannot handle it.

Ah ok, I see. Would be interesting to know why they decided against it. I do see it as a bit of a trial project, to get used to the latest technology. Los Angeles and Las Vegas have one, other US cities have them on order, and several Canadian cities do as well.
@Stargazzer811
@Stargazzer811 8 ай бұрын
Why did they decide against it? Because they know its a fad, its a flop and its a failure. They saw the writing on the wall. Unfortunately, here in the US it will take someone dying after one of these stupid things fails to do its job for people to realize that. Until then politicians will decide to keep buying this junk instead of using whats tried and true. If its not broken, don't freakin fix it!

2 hours to drain the power. How long does ut take to fully re-charge?
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses 8 ай бұрын
Yes, and if that were to happen then the backup generator kicks in, essentially giving it the same endurance as a diesel powered truck. According to Rosenbauer, “with full power input of 150 kW, charging for just 15 minutes is enough to raise the level of the 132 kWh energy storage device from 50% to 80%.” I don’t know how long it would take to charge the batteries from 0% to 100% (should not be long though with the proper charger infrastructure at the station). And you have to consider that draining the battery to 0 would be an uncommon scenario for day to day use of the truck.
@EnjoyFirefighting

Doesn't it need to power the pumps for the water, etc? It may only have to drive a short distance to get to a fire, but has to run for potentially hours to put that fire out. I'd hate to see people die in order for a city to virtue signal owing an EV fire truck.
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses 8 ай бұрын
@@afoolandhismoneychannel Yes it does, that is why it has the backup generator that was mentioned in my video. It can pump water for about two hours (which is going to be more than enough for most fire calls), but if electricity levels get low the generator kicks in and recharges the batteries without the need to plug it in anywhere. That essentially gives it the same operating time as a regular fire truck before it would need to be refueled.

I'm a firefighter and that square box electric thing just hurts my eyes. No idea why Rosenbroken ( yes, many of us call them that because they tend to always have something broken ) went with a big square design over the more traditional design we know and made it electric, but electric fire trucks and water just seems like a horrible idea. Won't see them much until the tech/batteries is proven and it's not yet when it comes to long term. Not to mention battery costs to replace them when they die. Just not something you will see in large numbers right now. We've discussed these many times.

The design of the RTX is not my favorite either, but I think it looks cool in the Vancouver livery. At the end of the day fire trucks are work tools designed for functionality not looks. Electric fire trucks, and the Rosenbauer model in particular, are actually quickly gaining popularity. More and more departments around the world are buying them to test the new technology. Some departments have bought multiple. Several in Canada and the US have the RTX on order. Sure, the technology is not perfect yet, but the automotive industry as a whole is moving away from fossil fuels and towards electric, so it makes sense to invest in this tech now and try it out for emergency services as well.

"Square box thing"? What's weird about it in Canada or the US? As an European I'm also not fond of that shape (it's utilitarian only), but that is the "traditional" design here in Canada. Not sure what you mean; if anything, it's a refreshing take on the "square box thing".

Right with ya Merkel. I personally don't see a need to even consider hybrid emergency vehicles anyway. Don't get me wrong I'm all for cleaner air and shit, we need to protect the planet if we're gonna have one in 300 years. But this, this isn't the way to do it, especially when you consider automakers have already told us what we've known all along: this new wave of hybrids and EVs are a fad and not sustainable due simply to lack of materials. We also know that their production dumps more toxic gas into the atmosphere than normal car production and the batteries are immensely toxic to the environment, not to mention a bitch to put out when one of these things starts itself on fire.

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 8 ай бұрын
"yes, many of us call them that because they tend to always have something broken " well because Rosenbauer America has nothing in common with Rosenbauer elsewhere around the globe. Elsewhere they're rather known for quality, sth which can't be said about their US division which builds entirely different type of apparatus. "went with a big square design over the more traditional design " because they built the RT for Europe, and only as American departments wanted to have it so badly as they presented their concept truck, they made an Americanized version of the European apparatus. "but electric fire trucks and water just seems like a horrible idea" absolutely no reason for that. It's not like batteries would be put in one bucket and water in another open bucket next to it. They know how to make things water proof - you know electric cars also work in rain, can drive through fords, and hell there are also electric ships out there. "Won't see them much until the tech/batteries is proven" these apparatus were long-term tested in real life conditions at several departments already.

We have lots of fire calls as well, but most of them have no chance to get anywhere close to a fully involved structure fire. Despite us attacking the fire with rather low volume and high pressure, in contrast to you rather working with large volume and lower pressure, most fires here are under control within a short amount of time, resulting in shorter pump operations.
