Similar things have happened in the US. Essentially we are actively hurting our citizens and many go along with it because they have been tricked into thinking it is a moral responsibility. Now they want to do the same thing with the internet but it is much more unregulated so the government will obviously be trying to self pick content and in doing so only serve their political narrative. That is not right. But Canadians cannot see the difference. Canadians are lied to and are too bothered to read through the lies just struggling to get by right now. Things have gotten worse, our kindness is waning, but it is still there. More than anything it is now misguided. We have to be kind to trans so we have to shove their shit into our schools and corrupt our children, we have to be kind to immune compromised ppl so we have to get vaccines and stop protests against it by any means, we have to be kind to the environment so we have to pay an extraordinary gas tax when electric cars are not even close to having the infrastructure needed to take over. Also our immigrants are no longer being assimilated and many end up leaving due to the high cost of rent. Their pessimism due to our mistreatment and lies towards them are why most new immigrants do not share our values like they did in the past. Our country has been fooled. Almost 60% of people didnt vote Liberal, but that 30ish% formed a minority, and yes the NDP joined forces to make a Coalition gov't which has be a 1 sided agreement as NDP hasnt gotten what they wanted out of the bargain. Growing up and getting taught about the nazis coming to power i remember everyone always acting like it was certain they would have been on the good guy side fighting against the tyranny if they had been there. I always maintained they were deluded and a very small percentage would have the courage and fortitude to stand up to those pressures. Everything that's happened the last few years has confirmed to me that not only will people not speak up many will actually revel in the societal permission afforded them to attack the out group with glee.

Exactly. People (outside Germany, specifically) act like Hitler showed up one day and the very next day it was full-tilt, hardcore "cleanse the world" Nazi mode. That's not how things happen. It's gradual, it's bit by bit. It starts out with some things that make perfectly good sense, then some things that make less sense, and it just gets worse by degrees. And people stubbornly refuse to see the truth until it's too late, at which point they're stuck between standing up and getting killed, or going along and hoping you don't. The thing that really infuriates me (Canadian, by the way) is that this isn't the 1940's. Information is AVAILABLE for people who care to look. The truth comes out much quicker and more frequently than ever before. And yet, people are so wilfully ignorant that it's honestly a bit terrifying. I remember once during COVID when most of the people at my work had had it and it passed. Me and a coworker were speaking with a customer and she brought up vaccines. My coworker pointed out he and his family had gotten it, and were sick as dogs, but I didn't get it and was the least affected person out of all the other employees who got COVID (not saying the vaccine made people sicker, but my immune system has always been bulletproof). The lady literally took 2 steps back from me when she found out I wasn't vaccinated, despite my coworker literally having just told her both of us had COVID at roughly the same time... But because of all the crazy fearmongering our government (and most others) were doing about it and the vaccine, she had a negative reaction to me specifically...
