Is there not some cross over between RCMP and CF. Like pension? Example, you can from CF to RCMP and transfer your CF pension. I could be wrong. Or maybe it's just the quality of training allows for easy recruitment Tried to look it up but no luck

The RCN has been in exponential decline for years and is not huge at all, not a single carrier even when the Brits offered to sell them a package deal of one of their Invincible class light carriers complete with a Harrier strike wing for a very deep discount, maybe it was a sour taste over the whole Victoria class SSKs they bought from Britain which overall has been nothing short of disastrous. They haven’t even attempted to have a small amphibious assault ship/light carrier the way Australia, Turkey, or even Algeria and Egypt has, it’s embarrassing honestly for a nation with the amount of coastline and territorial waters the way Canada has to have absolutely nothing in terms of naval aviation. I feel terrible for Canadian Armed Forces members, they’re very competent people having to make due with second rate equipment, shitty housing situations, and incompetent officers because they have politicians running the country that since the late 60s have forfeited Canadas national security to the Americans and/or the Brits and spend the utter minimum on maintaining an armed forces

The RCMP used to include counter intelligence and a form of special operations. Elected officials, based on something like you would call a Congressional investigation, split these functions away from the RCMP. CSIS covers intelligence and counter intelligence (since roughly 1980). CANSOFCOM provides the high level military operations.

Not sure if you’re still wondering about the JTF2 and police distinction but if so like others have said it was originally apart of the RCMP’s Special Emergency Response Team back before 93 and behaved basically like the FBI’s HRT. Due to growing concerns about police miliarization and belief that the armed forces could fund, train, and equip it better they took over, renamed it the JTF2 and left the RCMP with the regular Emergency Response Team still to this day. In regards to domestic deployment, generally hostage rescues and similar are still handled by the ERT and local police forces if they happen to have their own swat departments. If the JTF2 are called in it is because things have gone so far south that there’s no other option for success in which case they will arrive untagged and unnanounced before whatever happens to be the problem stops being a problem. Pretty cool mandate and makes you wonder how many times they have been deployed domestically since their presence is always a mystery

The RCMP has a strong counterterrorism unit, but in cases where a small scale military response is required in a domestic context my understanding is that JTF2 would operate under the auspices (but not the authority) of the RCMP and/or other police services. If a larger scale response was required (as in a response scenario for a nuclear incident) they'd likely deploy in a more visible way.
@nilloc93
@nilloc93 2 жыл бұрын
if a large scale military response is needed they'd just deploy one of the reg force mech brigades. JTF2's domestic task in very high risk insertions and rescue missions. Anything above a platoon level movement and they're going to start throwing infantry companies at the problem. Ref October Crisis and Oka crisis.

Hi you seemed a little surprised by the mention of some of the Canadian special forces starting up in the 1990's. Actually special forces in Canada began during WW11 as this Post World War II special forces legacy article mentions: In 1952, Col. Aaron Bank (U.S.A.) created another elite unit using the training, the strategies, and the lessons learned from the "Devil's Brigade's" (W.W.11) missions. This force evolved into specialized forces such as the Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Navy SEALs.

RCMP Special Emergency Response Teams took on more of a domestic SWAT role under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Mulroney decided that counter-terrorism really belonged in the hands of the military and CSIS (Canadian Security and Intelligence Service) instead of the federal police force. Off-topic, but the RCMP has a couple of different uniforms, including a 'typical' working patrol uniform. detectives wear suits just like the FBI, and undercover members can look like Martin Riggs or Joe Dirt if they want. I hope I've provided some insight.

There is no real legal equivalent to posse comitatus in Canada (or the UK, for that matter). As Canada has no National Guard when a provincial government needs assistance from the military both reservists and Regular Force personnel can be deployed as "aid to the civil power". Military are still not sworn law enforcement so I imagine if military personnel were involved in a policing matter they would operate in a joint manner with local, provincial or federal policing agencies and the cops would actually make the arrest of any surviving terrorists (etc.). And not only can the military be involved in policing, the RCMP's origin was of a hybrid military police force on the Canadian frontier. Up until the 90's the RCMP (even though a civil police force) was actually still under National Defence and only then was brought completely under the control of a civilian agency, currently Public Safety Canada. And although they are a federal police force (filling the role of the FBI, ATF, etc.) they have contracted with several provinces to serve as essentially their state and county police equivalent, and in those provinces also provide municipal policing. So the Mountie busting you for speeding or going through a stop sign is actually a federal officer. (Although I find police, especially RCMP, usually very chill about traffic enforcement. All funding comes from taxes and so there is absolutely no incentive for them to generate revenue by writing tickets.)

I'm Canadian 🇨🇦. I have friends that fought I Somalia, Ugoslavia etc.. We are less than 10% of your population. When the chips are down. We always show up. I wouldn't leave a brother or a cousin at the door. That is how we feel America 🇺🇸. You're welcome

RCMP = FBI it's our federal police BUT they are often employed by smaller cities / high patrolling Essentially a multi role org. Far less corruption than city police & Co.

As a Canadian of Scandinavian descent, I couldn't help spotting a Norwegian flag patch on one of the shooters at mark 7:27, and while Canadian climate has a lot in common with Scandinavia, I wonder if Canada trains together with Norway like The Royal Marines do on a regular basis. Oh and, support Ukraine in their dire moment. I don't hate Russians, but Russian Nationalistic culture has to be stopped. Putin will go down in history as a cursed leader for a century at least. I won't even get started on Trump. Sadly, two thirds of Republicans have become indecent people who have lost their way. Let Democracy prevail.

When I served in the 80's, 1 PPCLI, in a time of war we would have been sent to Norway, I believe as part of the CAST Brigade.
