A new report from the United Nations says Canada's temporary foreign worker program is a "breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery." Tomoya Obokata, United Nations special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, says workers are being exploited, dealing with excessive working hours, less than minimum wage, and no access to health or social care as well as physical and sexual violence.

@@shauncameron8390treating the workers well would barely put a dent in corporate profits. It has nothing to do with the price of goods. Did self-checkouts lower prices? Did automating customer service lines lower the cost of services? Did the automation in the auto industry lower the cost of a car? In each of those examples the cost of doing business was reduced immensely, while putting people out of work. Those savings went to the shareholders, not the consumer.

Most of us who have a few decades of experience watching Conservative governments allow corporate slavery in conjugation with their union hating political ideology know when it began. It enslaved us to where we are today. With the vast majority of Canadians not born to wealth only having a living wage because they have a union job. We are all slaves or in the 1%. Time to open your eyes to that reality.

He hasn’t brought anything to anyones attention this has been known since the systems inception and it’s far worse than what is being discussed here as well. Let’s just say that developed countries have an incentive to keep undeveloped/developing countries undeveloped be it for resource exploitation, cheap labour, cheap manufacturing/products. Those at the top need people at the bottom in order for them to be propped up. To answer your question there is no solution, countries will simply find another loophole and get away with it. First there was slavery, then indentured servants, and now migrant workers.

Funny, lots of justification of these work conditions in the comments. So I guess, foreign workers being sexually abused is deemed OK by those that don't see a problem with this system. In Canada as in many country, a person on a temporary work visa is extremely vulnerable. Having your country branded with "slavery" is hard to digest. But maybe the cure for this indigestion is to fix the problem rather than deny it or justify it. And if we do not trust the UN Rapporteur, then let us have our own enquiry. Apparently, it would not take two years to complete it.

"Apparently, it would not take two years to complete it."..... This is the Canadian govt we're talking about. It will take 2 years just to get out of committee lol. Then another year for the study to take place, another year for the report to be rendered, which of course will be heavily redacted. Then about six months to ensure the report is woke enough. An independent Canadian inquiry will only say what we as Canadians want to hear... we are great, nothing to see here. You think our govt really wants to know what's going on... or that any meaningful action will take place?

No one has said that is ok! But describing less than ideal conditions as “ slavery “ is a gross misrepresentation in the vast majority of cases! Like anywhere, there are a small minority of “ bad “ actors but the vast majority are not as it is not in their own self interest! Any claims of “ criminal “ activities by the employers should be investigated and prosecuted if justified by the authorities!

Do you have a clue. I have been in a family business market gardens for 45 plus years, health inspectors come by yearly to check on accommodations and workers have always made good money, most air fare is covered and overtime is paid after 48 hours in Alberta, they buy their own groceries I believe most farm hands from Canada in most cases aren’t paid overtime as it’s seasonal work and requires many hours during planting and harvesting and If everyone wants to Pay twice the price then farmers can sure set that up. Food brought in from other countries where people are made much less just like our clean oil in Canada where employees have rights verses foreign oil I am so tired of ill informed people. He describes this as “Slavery” yet no one is “forcing” these temporary workers to come work against their will! The fact “recruiters” are charging large fees has got little to do with Canada! That is an agreement between the recruiter and the worker! No doubt some employers are not treating them as well as they would like but that happens to locals too! If the employer requires seasonal help, it is not in their own self interest to treat these workers so badly they refuse to return the next season! There are many, many countries where the locals are treated much, much worse!!

Didn't know there were a lot of farms in the middle of Downtown Toronto. Yet the same workers for the most part return year after year in most cases. Time to leave the UN for good.

You will see this in almost any field where there is manual labour. There will always be complainers. There will always ‘abusive’ bosses, because someone feels they are better then they really are. A few of these videos shown showed people working at a snails pace. How is a company supposed to make money at that pace. This is driving the prices up due to labour costs. Automation of these jobs is just around the corner, and none of them will be working. “Go woke go broke” rings a bell.

No one comes to work in the morning.. With the intentions of doing a bad job. .There is a reason why. ..We must learn to help and improve that worker. .You will find a job some were that he can do and be productive.Treat them more like family. and not like low class immigrants. . When.the boats.are docked at the harbour. waiting to be filled up for export. .Its good have happy well payed group of workers. That know what they are doing. . You have a short window to make if. or break it for the season. It's better be on the right side of your work force.
