It's amazing how much money my government can spend on foreign aid when they are unwilling to even provide clean water everyone in our own country. I'm pissed off about not having paved roads too, but I'll let that slide for now.

I usually hate on most videos of Vice, But Clean water is a basic human right. The treatment plant was built in 1993 and was deemed unable to produce clean water so why wasn't something done or retrofitted.

Spending more money importing bottle water for 20 years than to actually fix the water treatment plant is a clear indicator that its not a money issue.

This is outrageous. If this was ANY town or city in the rest of Canada, there would be lawsuits, petitions, and widespread outrage. They're building wells in undeveloped countries and providing them with financial aid but refuse to provide clean water right here in Canada??? Why is the rest of Canada not up in arms about this? How are they not being sued?

Okay, so they have a plant but the plant is not working? What caused the plant to fail and how come the cost of maintaining the plant wasn't part of the budget of the plant? Something doesn't make much sense. What is further really weird and odd is that the federal government gives this band $1 million dollars per year for bottled water. From the publicly available documents that describe the problems of the plant, they are mainly issues with the pumps. I am sure the cost of these pumps would be less than the cost of servicing this community with bottled water over these years. I wonder why wasn't these pumps fixed? Also from the same publicly available documents, another major issue is the lack of qualified people in the community to maintain and manage the treatment plant. Okay, I found the answer: the community diverted the funds from the maintenance of the plant to pay down debt. this really paints a picture of really bad management.

Canada may be a first world nation but for a lot of aboriginal communities, Canada is very third world. The root of the problem is lack of political will.

In the description for the Shoal Lake 40 video it is written that there are "169 First Nations communities have limited or no access to it" ...so if you're reading this Vice, you might want to fix/check your descriptions so your otherwise great reports don't become somewhat befuddling. Love these people and their dogs so much. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I worked in their community building homes. The most gorgeous land I have ever seen in my life.

I lived here for three weeks for work. 30$ A CASE OF WATER! Constantly boiling water on a kettle. I was talking to a worker from Sudbury working for Ontario water. He says the water is fine to drink, and he even drinks it without boiling. The problem with their water treatment center is it isn't pumping enough water. It's quantity issue over quality I was told.

I am really lucky that i get very clean water out of the tap with only a 10m well in the backyard (yes it is getting tested once a year or so). There is no chlorine at all in the water!

Why did the treatment plant in 1995 stop working? They glossed over that in the video. Why couldn’t it be fixed?

There's a thing with activated charcoal that cleans the water, like a natural filter. You make it from fruits, wood, and other things. And you put it in a cloth to clean the water. If anyone knows about it and if 'im wrong, correct me :)

I haven't been able to drink my tap water in newfoundland since before I was born and I still can't drink it today I'm 22 you always have to fill your bottles every couple days

I believe one reason why pipes and treatment facilities aren’t being built on many reserves is because majority of First Nations people don’t vote in provincial and federal elections so the people who win and are in charge don’t care about pleasing them because they’re not tax payers and/or people who vote in elections. The elected officials would rather please tax payers and/or people who vote then the First Nations people on the remote reservations. That’s just one reason of course.

@ 2:20 Why don't you take responcibilty for your own community instead of expecting it from the Federal Government. It's been 500 years. This will always be a problem as long as that attitude exists. I want First Nations to advance, but they never will if they sit on an isolated piece of land feeling sorry for themselves.

As a Canadian the way I look at it is first nations want there own land an own laws an to not pay into our taxes but expect to benefit from our tax dollars. If they wish to be treated like the rest of the population than act like the rest of the population simple as that. When was the last time you seen a tax paying population have a boil advisory for 20 years?

Please don't view this comment as being hateful, I have a lot of sympathy. I'm no friend of Harper. Also, it's tragic what has happend to first nations. I think we are all people and should all be treated equally. There are many poor people in urban areas who could use these resources. I think vice lacks a cost benifit analysis on this situation and does not compare the norm for other rural communities. A generalization that Canadian Federal Government is racist seems to be their conclusion. Anoter Vice video on this subject talks about a $30 million road and a water treatment plant for a community of 200 people. I don't know the cost of a treatment plant but let's estimate including the road it's $100 million. Imgaine what $100 million could do for the city of Toronto with 5 million people. Subway, infrastructure, school, social housing. I think the money could be used to help a lot more desparate people out there. We cannot dump unlimited money on these problems though. Water management is a municiple role. I understand the Federal Government is responcible for this situation, this community gets extra support from the Fed that other rural Ontario communities do not. I used to live in rural Ontario, water was drawn from a well or a lake if your town is too small or your property is too isolated. Should the Federal Government pay for all the farmers and rural property owners to have them hooked up to a water grid or have their own treatment plants? It's not logical at all, some places are too isolated to have everything. The community in rural Ontario I used to live in had 30 year round inhabitants and about 100 seasonal, these people did not have access to a municiple clean water system, they had to build their own wells, and buy spring water jugs for drinking. Canada is the second largest country by area in the world. I just don't think it's logical to connect every person in Canada to clean water. One example, My mother is retired and lives in rural Ontario. She had to pay to install a well. The well water is not good enough to drink so she has a water cooler and buys water jugs at the store. Should the federal government hook her up to a municple water grid. I think her community should be treated equally to Neskantaga. If we say water is a human right and everyone should have access let's mean it.

Love the haters. These people dont want to lose their heritage, or be removed from their communities.. yet their income for most of the community is GIVEN to them by the government. They're so worried about losing their ancestry ways, but they expect free fresh water to be flown in. I dont get it, you have to pay taxes for them to use the money to build and maintain a treatment plant. But wouldnt free fresh water be ruining their heritage? Pick a side and stick with it. if you want to live in the midle of nowhere like your ancestry and the government flow you money, then do it! but if you want everything cities have (where taxes are high and society runs based on the effort put towards it) then move to a populated area! these communities are not built on anything except ignorance.

I live in lilooet british columbia and I am a member of the Sek'wel'was indian band. The municipality and provincial government just built a new water treatment plant on our reserve without our permission. We get our water from wells and spend about 50% of the year on boil alert.

I find it extremely disheartening and pathetic the amount of racist, bigoted and detached comments from the people who watch this video of a broken community and can only provide more pain and anguish. I'm not some idealist I live in Canada's city with the highest violent crime rate, North Battleford, and am surrounded by 9 FN communities and I see literally everyday these issues played out in my home town. I hope for those who see this video and who's only response is callousness, disregard and hate that they can have the opportunity, not in a vindictive way, to live life so desperately and see how hard it is to make good in this world.
