I am a veteran and when I was releasing a few years back there were a ton of people leaving the forces, for better jobs, better pay and better life. They have a personnel retention problem for a reason. I loved being in the military but the military changed so much that I wouldn't want my kids to join. They don't take good care of their people and it is not a family friendly environment. The shortage and mismanagement of personnel created fatigue, anger and very unhealthy morale. All the good people are leaving or already left. Shame on you politicians and shame on your poor leadership. You've successfully destroyed our honor and pride.

The Armed Forces gets enough applicants and inquiries, but they don't have the staffing levels or the motivational drive to follow up with enough people in a reasonable amount of time. Good candidates drop out of the recruiting queue all the time. Also, they reject perfectly good Canadians all the time. They reject you if you have a bad credit score. They reject you if you need laser eye surgery and you can't afford to get it -- and with record amounts of nearsightedness due to our lifestyle, expecting an 18-year-old to pay thousands of dollars to get that fixed before they can get into the 2-year queue to join the Forces is just laughably silly. They need to adjust their expectations and have more reasonable standards (you can't expect every soldier to be Superman and then have a toxic internal culture when there are people who don't live up to that). And both the senior and junior leadership need to step up their game and improve themselves. Once you have people, people who were willing to wait around doing nothing for 2 years on the off chance they might get accepted, then they can't leave fast enough. The internal culture of the armed forces is like crabs in a bucket. But we can change that. One way of changing that is flooding the armed forces with experienced professionals from civvy street who can bring a level of maturity and professionalism to the forces. Get those recruiters adequately staffed and get them motivated to get people through the process quickly.

@@chi_chai what are their expectations? Serious question. O know that there are differences in pay between deployment assignments and when not deployed. Which honestly makes sense to me. It's a bit of a Catch Twenty two that in order to have people understand an updated view of the world and our military, we need more people,,, yet that is held back by the lack of understanding. I know we lost some who want a lot of deployment...who probably should have stayed on just a bit longer because that's clearly the direction we are moving in. Frustrating. When I was still in university (around 2009), I signed up to be a reservist at an infantry regiment in Vancouver. They put me through so many processes, from checking mental aptitude, health checks, and fitness. Went through all that with months in between steps. Finally they want me to come in for another test, then I said I have a final exam that day and can't. They said no excuses and if you can't come in whenever they want, they'll close my file and don't need me. Some just leave because they feel it;s not for them. You don't know unless you try. Even at five years plus or including training, they are still going to be working during that time frame so yes, it's worth it. We have only ever had the draft in Canada once. Everyone is volunteer. Honestly, that's special in my opinion. I've always respected our military and it's been evolving over decades as Canada has been evolving as well. Both men and women in my family history have served. The times are changing again after decades of relative peace and prosperity. We've just ridden a serious pandemic wave and are recovering. I was a 36+ year of the CAF and retired in 2016. During my time in uniform I watched how the recruit process fell apart. When I joined we had all the same tests as they did now and there was a security/back ground test but there were more people doing the security/background test so getting this piece wasn't a problem. Now it can take years for the applicant to go thought the process which is not acceptable. Also in my time there wasn't a need for every applicant to be a university grad nor show that they had the aptitude to become the CDS like today. Remember that the CAF runs because there are Cpl/MCpl/Sgt in the ranks. We all know of career Cpls and those folks stayed in and made the machine run. Not everything new is the best and some ways from the past, that worked should be looked at to see if they can improve recruitment. Boots on the floor is better than files on someone's computer.

There is such a thing as a sniper. However, our military is becoming this versatile entity that has to deal with many, many kinds of situations: forest fires, floods, cleaning bedpans and caring for people as with the elderly homes in Quebec during the pandemic, supplementing essential services staff in our own hospitals as had to be done in Edmonton Alberta during the pandemic which they cannot always afford to do frankly, peace keeping, moving supplies, Clearing mines...if you think the only skill is how to shoot a gun you sure wouldn't get into Special Forces.

What a mess. I spent 2 years just trying to apply! Granted, the timing was not great as I applied just before the lockdowns in 2019. I got as far as doing the aptitude test which qualified me for all three occupations I selected, but then everything came grinding to a halt. They told me they were only going to continue processing applications for in demand occupations, the recruitment event I was scheduled to attend was canceled, and none of the occupations I selected fell into that category. So when offered, I changed my application to an occupation which was in demand at the time. My good friend who joined a year earlier gave me a heads up that they were going to require vaccinations and so I went and got that done to avoid any further delays. But before my application could be processed, the occupation I changed my application for was no longer in demand and they gave me the same option of either applying for a different in demand occupation or re-applying later (after transferring my application from the recruiting centre I had originally applied through with no explanation as to why). I understand that they were doing everything they could under the circumstances, but seriously, I think they kind of shot themselves in the foot with how they operated during the pandemic, as I’m sure I’m far from the only one who experienced these problems. I’ve thought very seriously about re-applying over the last few months, but at this point I’m not even sure I want to go through it all over again, as they require a new, “updated” application now that it’s been so long 🤦🏼‍♂️

It''s coming, but I would love to see more members of the CAF writing to the PM...politely in an advisory way as to what they want to see and what the issues of the past have been and what to avoid. Also, we have an awesome MP for the military. She actually cares and she is all business. She has an ear for the troops. People complain about government spending but I have never seen a government in vise in people like this one. I feel in my gut it will pay off and is needed asap. There are a lot of needs in getting Canada up to scratch with the current world as things stand now. I agree with your list ...and DRONES!!! We have two excellent manufacturers in Canada now that are making fantastic vehicles. I really like the approach to uniforms being update tech every five years compared to doing everything every twenty. Smart. Perhaps that will be applied to everything else?

At face value this is true. But you can have all the equipment in the world, but at the hands of an incompetent manager (as we have today) those things won't mean anything. For example, if we ever get around to having an attack helicopter. What operations will it be used on? How will it be sustained and exercised? When incompetenacy is at the core of the issue, addressing it with shiney things will only go so far but won't provide a lasting solution. Soldiers still fix, maintain, manage, supply, train, exercise, and deploy. If incompetancy is what makes all of those things happen (or not) then the soldiers are the ones effected at the end of the day, not the shiney toy.

I’m Canadian born and raised, I was in cadets for 5 years and when I was finished I wanted to join the army, so I applied and took the aptitude test (before covid) I didn’t pass, they didn’t tell me how close I was or what I needed to work on other than math, fast forward to last year and I heard they needed more people, so I called the recruiter this time they told me how close I was the first time I took it(I was 1 mark off on the math section) so I bought the CFAT training app and studied for a month or 2, and went to take it again, the day i took it there was only 2 other people writing it with me, i didn’t pass the second time, this time I actually did worse, after being informed I didn’t pass, i again asked them for advice on what to study, the only advice they gave me was to study more math, and that I was “ a few off” .I know that at least one of the other 2 people taking the test that day didn’t get in and I don’t know what happened to the other guy, that recutting Centre is the only reg force one between Hamilton and the us border so it covers around 1 million people, they only do aptitude tests once a week and that day maybe only 1 person passed his CFAT, so 1 in a million people every week get in to the CAF every week in that area.

Being unable to meet recruiting targets is a HUGE Trudeau government failure. It means we aren't processing them fast enough, and the pay, and incentives aren't good enough. A total Trudeau failure. Maybe in order to get a government job, armed forces service should be compulsory, or 50% of the positions should be reserved. Or 20% of the positions in medical school. Or 20% of positions in nursing and law. Minimum pay should exceed police and fire.

As a former recruiter at the Toronto recruiting centre, the issues that I noticed from potential candidates were the following; 1. Poor pay. 2. The contract times. If you want all of the “bonuses “ you will have to stay in longer. 3. Postings. People want to be close to home ( for some reason). Plus you have to move around every 4 to 5 years. 4. Lack of overseas posting or tours ( peacekeeping or otherwise). Retention is the biggest issue facing the CAF , not recruiting.
