As a Canadian living in England, it was only a matter of time before moving back home to Canada (even if it's only temporary). This week, I wanted to share some reverse culture shock moments with you - weird things I've noticed about Canada after living abroad for so long!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZfaq video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

I remember visiting the US and seeing those medical adverts for the first time, I found them amazing. My favourite was a medication for people that have sore feet and one of the side effects was "sudden premature death" I couldn't help but think I'd rather just have a sore foot.

The reason why (and Tom Scott has an excellent video on it) is that in the UK it is illegal to recommend medicines unless you area Dr *and* you have proof of what you are advertising. Edit: Here's the link - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n8mPedODrJ2-j58.html

Advertising prescription medicine is illegal in Canada too. No Canadian television channel will have them. Advertising prescription medicine is legal in the United States. Since a large number of American television channels are available as part of Canadian cable or satellite TV packages (or even via antenna reception since most of us live close to the border), we get to see the American ads. Each country regulates their own networks. Most Canadians don't care for the pharma ads to say the least and it isn't unusual to hear people mock them. We're on the same page as the U.K. and Europe on this issue. The neighbours aren't.

Have you read Bill Bryson's "I'm a Stranger Here Myself"? He went to England after college, met someone, got married and stayed 20 years. The book is his reverse culture shock upon returning to the US after being away for 20 years. (He has other humorous books about living in England.) Reverse culture shock is far more than those "little differences", it can be emotionally painful. Once you have moved abroad and returned home, "home" is never quite the same place as the one you left - you have changed and so your relationship with your home country changes. It is actually far more disturbing that the culture shock of moving abroad in the first place. Some never totally recover and end up returning to the place they left.

After spending 6 months in North America I had the same thing when I returned. When we heard a British accent after landing at the airport, we thought it was someone from Black Adder cracking a joke as it was so patronising. When we realised it was airport staff we were in reverse culture shock. We found Canadians more optimistic and our English family pessimistic (unless that's just our family?!) and the government in the UK much more 'nanny stateish' in it's attitude, insulting the intelligence of the British people. Like yesterday a packet of Brazil nuts we opened said 'warning, may contain nuts'. lol

You advocate for the same kind of "nationalism" as the Nazis did. You're a supremacist, and there's nothing better than being hated by a supremacist, who in life are the lowest form of human existence. Having duly considered it, Alanna is far more of a Canadian Nationalist than you are, representing Canada far better than your 'dripping with hatred of others' digital presence does. She's doing Canada proud, whilst you do nothing other than spew forth hate at and about "others". Were I the kind of nationalist (ie supremacist) you are, where I found myself, my country, and it's people, were being far better represented before the world by someone who would rather live in another country. I'd seriously consider examining my own world view, and what it was I stood for, as opposed to what is was I hated about everyone else. Thankfully I'm not that kind of nationalist.

For the Candians reading this, when Alanna opens with "I'm a Canadian who's spent the last fours years + living in England, and now I'm back living in Canada." what she means is we're loaning her back to you for a bit, but we'll be wanting her back just as soon as we can get past this latest little kerfuffle. Don't go getting your hopes up. Watch out for the glass slipper, we wouldn't want you donating the one you still have, before your Prince Charming comes back with the one you lost.

Advertising prescription drugs is illegal in the UK I believe - and that's a good thing. There wasn't a limit on the quantity of painkillers that you could buy many years ago - the limit was introduced to try to reduce the number of cases of desperate people buying large quantities for the wrong reason.

As most people in Canada probably know, we have electricity in our bathrooms because we have GFI outlets (ground fault interrupter) if there is any problem with the electricity feed or some water gets splashed on the outlet the interrupter kicks the power off to that outlet, there is a button on the outlet to reset it, I am sure they have these all over the world.

In the UK and Australia the nominal supply voltage is 230 V +10%/−6% (216.2 V to 253 V). Most transformers are still 240 V and there is absolutely no reason to change them. I am referring to the transformers that step the national grid down from 275kV or 400kV. North America also has 220V for high demand appliances.

You know that's very surprising, I'm always told how bland and disappointing our food is here in the UK by Americans, I put herbs and spices in my food on a regular basis, most of the meals I make have a variety of ingredients because I generally don't like bland food. It's surprising to hear there is a lack of range in America, going by how much they big up their food you would think it would be a different situation.

Know what you mean about culture shock. I spent 20+ years travelling the world because of my work. Sometimes returning to the UK was like visiting Grand Fenwick (if you haven't seen them check out the films The Mouse that Roared and The Mouse that went to the Moon, or read the books) at other times it was like regaining freedom. One thing that really struck me was how humans are the same everywhere. I worked in a pub immediately before going on my first 4-month trip, I joined the ship in Brazil but had to wait 24 hours as it had been delayed. Ended up in a bar run by a Hungarian DP (displaced person, one of the refugees from WW2, it was a while ago now). He had spent time in the UK and was fascinated by UK pubs so I ended up behind the bar and other than the drinks requested it was exactly the same as in the UK. We went to Japan next (long haul, iron ore) and I found myself in the All Liverpool Stand Bar and it could have been the vault in any British pub, there was the same guy trying to dominate the room with his voice, the quiet couple in the corner, the range of characters all with their own tales to tell. Cultures differ but people are just people.

That contains 8mg of codeine, bottle of 100 tablets. They include acetaphetamine. So you can't take more than 6 a day. As far as Electricity in the bathroom. It's always above and away from water lines. Cords for Curling Irons, Hair dryer, Charging for Electric razors and Electric toothbrushes are very short.
