At a bearing of 28º latitude North and 16º longitude West a group of 7 islands and numerous islets rise up out of the sea. With its warm climate and unusual landscapes, this archipelago has from time immemorial captivated those who reached its coasts. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera y La Palma.
The Canary Islands were never a part of any sunken continent. Their origin is quite different and much less romantic.
About 30 million years ago, in what is known as the Miocene period, a crack appeared in the African platform. The magma found a way to escape from inside the Earth and a group of volcanoes appeared on the Ocean bed. Over the next 28 million years, the expulsion of material occurred almost continuously and so by the time the Earth entered the Quaternary Era all of the islands, except for Hierro and the islets, had risen above the surface.
Volcanic activity also effected plant life on the islands. The continuous supply of new materials delayed the erosion process and so impeded the creation of soil where trees and bushes could grow.
Here, in the foothills of the highest volcano in the archipelago, Teide, the plants have taken another step in the adaptation process. Not only do they live in very poor soil, but they can also withstand differences in daytime and night time temperatures of up to 50º centigrade.
As the islands rose up from the depths reefs were created and a new eco-system appeared in the ocean. The marine flora found new ground on which to settle and the fauna found countless nooks and crannies where it could set up home and be safe from predators. The layer nearest the surface, and therefore also nearest the sun, was the most populated.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the islands every year. Many come in search of the sun. Others however are fascinated by its landscapes and by the volcanic activity still present on some of the islands.
The water vaporisation and plant-burning shows on the islet of Hilario in the Timanfaya national Park, are just some of the multiple tourist attractions created in recent years.
The same forces that created this natural paradise could bury it again under tonnes of lava. This may seem a catastrophe for Man, but for nature, it would be just another step in the construction of the archipelago, a project which has been under construction for over 30 million years and is still far from finished.

Hello from Tenerife. OK as far as it goes, but you would need hours to really understand these islands. Indeed raw and beautiful. Canarian species are very different. The culture is rich and a mixture of African, South American, Guanche and Spanish. I love it here.

@Chicharrera. Жыл бұрын
I'm from Las Islas Canarias. I was born in Güimar, Tenerife in 1970. My mother is from Tenerife, my father from Lanzarote. My parents left the Islands in 1972 and we migrated to Australia to escape from General Franco. I have been back 4 times. In 1982 age 12 years for 3 months, age 18 in 1988 for one year to finish high school, in 1990 - 1994 age 20-24 for four years to work, again in 1994 as I came to Australia for a month holiday, returned to Tenerife, then at the end of the year flew back to Australia. I would never live there again. Even though I am from there, have lived and worked there and my entire relatives are from there, I don't identify with the locals because I've grown up as an Australian under that lifestyle. I had a boyfriend for the 4 years I lived there and in the end he broke up with me because I was far too "modern" for his taste. Canarian men, like all Latin origin men, like to dominate and control their women. Now, I'm no feminist, I am a traditional woman, have been married for 18 years, have a son that I homeschool. So, I'm old fashioned. But "old fashioned" to an Australian raised woman is different to a Canary Island raised woman. They are completely different. I wasn't willing to be dominated like a personal possession and put up with a rude, sexist male attitude in a man. My husband is Australian and I submit to him, but he doesn't dominate me like a Spanish man would. He earns all the family income, he gives me a small allowance to spend on food for the week, he takes care of the bills, but if I need money for anything I need to ask his permission. My husband is more of a feminist than I could want to be myself. He actually wants me to work full-time and bring money into the home. I'm the more old fashioned, traditional one in our relationship!! But, I simply cannot put up with Spanish attitude to life in general. They are not my "people", just my "ancestry". Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely set of Islands to holiday in, but to live amongst hard-headed, pig-headed & backward attitudes in both men and women is not my kind of idea of a good life. I'll stick to Australia- the "lucky country "!

At 15:58, the rock appears to be a map of the Canary Islands. You can see the peninsula of Fuerteventura at the middle center bottom, almost the exact shape thereof, and 5-6 all islands in a row to the right of it. The smaller figures appear to be boats. Some people from the Canary Islands called Islenos(Islanders) settled in SE Louisiana,USA back in 1780,when Louisiana then belonged to Spain.Their settlement came to be called"Saint Bernard Parish",after the then Spanish governor of Louisiana,Senor Bernard O,Reilly.Most of their descendants still live today in that part of SE Louisiana,just SE of New Orleans,and speak a Spanish dialect that's based mostly on 18th Century Canary Island Spanish.

This narrator sounds a lot like the antagonist in the movie "North by Northwest". Does anyone know?

I think you mean James Mason, the sound of his voice is close but J. Mason died in 1984.

@@latiffariss7940 Wow Latif! Right on! I wonder how their voices can sound so similar, if they are maybe from a similar part of the world and have the same resultant accent. It's stramge, my suddenly remembering North by Northwest. I like that movie! He was very good in it and real tension when the protag's friend, then enemy, then friend flip flop and how she was doomed and the protag... I think Cary Grant, forgot his character name, had to alert her and only minutes before it was going to be too late! I also really liked the close the protag had running through that cornfield, wow! I loved using Mount Rushmore too as a metaphor and important part of a screenplay I wrote.

I'm guessing the latter lacks cherry trees, as well. Canaries are overrated and one canary is enough...after that you want a Stellar sea eagle. (Thank you for helping me to bring the comment section to the gutter. LOL. Puns are great.)

Just wanting to say it's a nice vídeo pointing out the natural side of my Island's, Bute there's a few things wood like to add, first of all that In so called Tenerife Island named so by the invadors , Which in owner language means . High white mountain,? When in fact we call it Ahchenet, and the Bereberic tribe was knowns as Tamazid, not guanche.that was the name dropt on the Island by the Conquistadores.wich in Canuri the language used on the island of Gran Canaria before the invasion ,meant Man for Achenech. For The word WUA. O GUA, Means ,man.. AN means FROM , and CHE, makes reference to the Island name. ,So there for Guanches are only from Tenerife. Ahull ,and thanks for the vídeo well done. Gracias...
