Welcome to my canary & olive wood guitar build series. This series covers building a custom offset guitar in canary and olive wood. The guitar design is an original shape based on the singlecut offset design I built for GGBO 2023. This guitar is a 25.5 inch scale length with a string through body, 2 Bare Knuckle humbucker and a 3 way selector switch. This episode covers making the guitar neck and body from scratch. The woods used in this guitar build are walnut, olive, okoume, canary and maple. Thanks for watching!

What influences me in my guitar building?
I love building guitars and the community that has grown around luthiery. I like to build reimagined versions of classic guitars and give them my own twist. That Canary top and back idea is great! Normally I would love to see something like that stained in a burst type finish. But that specimen would be criminal to do any coloring. That grain pattern is positively gorgeous!

The only down side of having the top and back made of the same wood is the fact that the pretty back won't be seen much. I like the olive wood on the fret board it works well with the Canary wood. Don't see walnut used in a guitar neck much but it look good in this build doing pretty well so far.

Love that Gio. As ever it’s like watching a surgeon! The matching back and top really sing, as ever, utterly gorgeous woods. Surprised me seeing another set neck as I know you like bolt ons, but it looks really cool with the stacked woods and really comfy. A set neck is on my list of possible Things To Try Next Time. I really like the decision to end the binding at the heel, thats actually quite freeing and in particular at the nut, as i always find that binding transition between nut and headstock a bit of a pig to get right. I often find myself whizzing your vids back a few seconds such as the way you used that small ruler to mark out the heel shape. All in all - as they say in France- Hoopla!

Thanks once again Jamie. I love the back and top too and also I really enjoyed carving that heel. You’re right I do tend to prefer bolt ons personally but I have discovered this past year that people do generally tend to prefer, and be willing to pay more for a set neck guitar. It’s not really something I think I should shy away from given that I’m building them to sell, so I thought I’d find a way of making it as interesting, comfy and unique as I could and incorporate it into more of my builds. I’m glad you still pick up useful bits here and there too, I’m hoping we’re going to have a new vid from you soon!😀

Wow! I love the combinations of the woods, they comlpete eachother. And I would definetly not use colour on these great looking woods. I think your setup is great as always and I am very curious how she will sound. Can't wait. Again, she is stunning, also the disign.

another great looking guitar! im really liking how on the last couple of builds you have matching binding on the neck and the body of the guitar, also the matching from and back 'tops' really gives it a great custom look, cant wait to hear how this one sounds

I prefer a double cut away and this does not disappoint. The shape of the back half reminds me just a little of a mosrite (I hope I spelled that correctly). The bookmatch in the grain is very nice as well.

The wood choice is excellent, so much character. I also love your detailed but relaxed presentation too. As a matter of interest, what is the Body material thickness and top and back thickness’s. It looks chunky, but that could be the camera close up angle. Great Job!

Thanks I really appreciate the kind comment, its 45mm overall, the back and top are slightly different thickness (5mm and 6mm) but the binding is exactly the same (6mm) so you don’t see any difference, they’re both covered on the side 👍

Guitar looks sweet as usual! But, I'm waiting on you doing a guitar with all the carves and an angled headstock lol Ps, bolt on, set neck or neck through are all great! I've owned all and I've built all and I love them all. No point in ruining these things with stupid pointles debates imo.

GIO!!! Brother!! I was in love with this the second I saw you matching the top and back. I originally thought you made an editing mistake and put the same segment in back to back, I liked the look pre binding but that combo really works well. I flashed back to carving that add in piece for the BRS when I bought the set neck body and bolt on neck fo0r that build and had to adapt. Showing the four layers looks pretty cool where I hid mine under dark stain.. THANK YOU thank you thank you. PLEASE keep those color settings. That worked perfect for my eyes and I can now enjoy every little detail you put into your builds. I know you had to have spent serious time to do that with the lighting conditions in your shop mate. Seeing the finish go on will be like that moment where the sky opens up after a bad storm and the light rays start shining thru like Angels are on their way or something.

BILL! 😂😂 I did the colour for you my friend, it was little tricky and I’ll need to change it each time depending on the sunlight because I went too far the other way initially, but I’ll make sure it’s right at least for the guitar reveal and close up part of each vid, how’s that? For the working parts of the vid I like the way the sunlight in the shop adds a nice ambience. Thanks once again for another kind comment. I really like the look of a matching top and back and the stacked heel too. I’ll definitely experiment more. Btw your Les Paul project looks and sounds great my friend 👍

@@TornelliGuitars I kind of figured you made the effort to shut me up! 🤣🤣 Again Thank you sir. I know how fiddly lighting can be. Honestly just for the reveal is more than enough mate. I don't expect you to do that every video just for my sake. As for the LP thank you once again. It needs some teaks n such.. It REALLY needs some fall away for sure. I didn't do anything to the frets on that to start as they are super thin and tiny already.

@@TornelliGuitars I think there is just enough left on the frets to do the fall away. I may shim the nut up a few thousandths so I can drop the action just a smidge. It should become a shredder after that if I can pull it off... (not that I can play like that) Yes I still have my plan for the GGBO I wanted to do and will start that over winter. Weather is getting colder so no use officially entering this year because I wont be able to paint it til spring. that will give me time over winter to really practice my airbrush skills with the water colors inside. Lotta little "Catch up" projects will also be done over winter.

Matching the top and bottom like that is genius! And that olive fretboard with its textures is simply beautiful. The shades of colour makes this a style that would look great with black or white binding. The canary really sings. Wonderful work!

Beautiful instrument Gio, my love affair with olive wood continues looking at this - and the top and back are very smart. There's something nice about that 'sandwich' of woods. I just realised today you're probably the only Luthier I follow who doesn't use a bandsaw, the Jigsaw is a great touch for people watching - keeps it simple, and still effective. Are you going to SoundExpo next month?

Thanks Owen, I love olive too, it’s my favourite fretboard wood for sure. I hadn’t really thought about the jigsaw/bandsaw thing from a viewer point of view. I’ve just always felt more comfortable with the jigsaw. I don’t know what soundexpo is, I’ll look it up.

I’ve been away so have been looking forward to catching up with your build. What a relaxing and informative production. I love the wood choice and double binding. I notice you didn’t do any weight relief. What is the finished body thickness?

Thanks once again Tim. No I didn’t do any relief, the okoume is very light so I wanted to know what a solid body would weigh first time round. It’s 45mm thick which is about as thick as I like to go, usually somewhere between 42-43mm is what I do. I’ll weight the finished guitar and make sure to add it into the vid 👍

I thought it looked a bit chunkier than usual. But I guess it needs that with the binding. I’ve just thicknessed some mahogany from an old fireplace that I’ve had for 30 years. It was meant for a rocking horse but wasn’t wide enough. It’s enough for 3 bodies with different thickness tops. I may do a back and front after seeing this one. 👌
